  • Bowers and Merena Auctions conducts an auction in Boston, Massachusetts. Some highlights:
    • US 1794 Flowing Hair dollar, MS-64 NGC: US$1,207,500;
    • US 1870-S Seated Liberty dollar, one of nine known, EF-40 PCGS: US$632,500;
    • US 1854-O Coronet gold double eagle, one of 20 known, AU-55 PCGS: US$488,750.

  • The World Health Organization declares the H1N1 influenza pandemic over, saying worldwide flu activity has returned to typical seasonal patterns. [615]
August 13
  • A 7.2 magnitude earthquake strikes off the coast of Guam. [105]
  • The MV Sun Sea from Sri Lanka arrives at Esquimalt, British Columbia, Canada, with estimated 490 Tamil migrants seeking refugee shelter. The ship spent almost 90 days at sea. [105]
  • U.S. District Judge Jeffrey White bans the planting of genetically modified sugar beets engineered by Monsanto, ruling that in 2009 that the U.S. Department of Agriculture had approved Monsanto's genetically modified sugar beets without adequate environmental study. [35]

  • An estimated 20 million people are left homeless in Pakistan following unusually heavy monsoon rains that began in late July, leading to devastating floods. At least 1,500 people have been killed and hundreds of thousands of homes have been swept away by the water. More than 700,000 hectares of farmland have been wiped out. [105]

  • A Boeing 737 jetliner with 131 passengers aboard crashes on landing and breaks into three pieces at a Colombian airport on San Andres Island, killing only one person. The plane may have been hit by lightning just before crashing. [105]

  • A suicide bomber blows himself up at an army recruitment center in Baghdad, Iraq, killing at least 57 recruits and soldiers and wounding 123. [35]

  • Iranian and Russian engineers begin loading uranium fuel into Iran's first nuclear power plant, Bushehr. [105]

  • At the Champion Hong Kong Auction sale in Hong Kong, a possibly unique Chinese 1910 Yunnan Spring dollar graded MS-65 by NGC sells for US$1,0350,000, making it the first Chinese coin to sell for more than US$1 million. [515.10] (graded AU-55 [617.151]) (graded MS-55 [712.161])

  • US military in Iraq cuts its strength to 50,000 troops. [35]
August 25
  • Coordinated attacks on Iraqi security forces throughout the country kill at least 62 people and wound over 250. [35]

  • Mount Sinabung in North Sumatra province of Indonesia erupts for the first time in 400 years. [105]
September 3
  • A suicide bomber strikes a Shi'ite rally in the Pakistani city of Quetta, killing at least 54 people, wounding about 160. [35]
  • New Zealand's South Island is hit by 7.0-magnitude earthquake, 30km west of Christchurch. Damage is relatively minor, with no injuries reported. [105]

  • In San Bruno, California, a gas pipeline explosion destroys 38 homes, kills at least four people, and leaves a large crater in the ground. [35]

  • The oil well in the Gulf of Mexico is finally sealed, after leaking about 4.9 million barrels of oil since April 20. [1563.25]

  • A helicopter crash kills nine American troops in Afghanistan, making 2010 the deadliest year of the war since 2001 for foreign troops. [35]

  • Brazil's partially state-owned oil company Petrobras sells US$70 billion in shares in the world's biggest-ever stock offering. [35]

  • Two Russian cosmonauts and a U.S. astronaut abort a return to Earth when their space capsule fails to separate from the International Space Station. Crew members later rig jumpers to bypass a failed component and succeed in opening the door. [35]

  • National elections in Venezuela: President Hugo Chavez's Socialist Party wins 98 seats in the National Assembly, with the opposition Democratic Unity bloc (of over 30 parties) taking 65. [35]
  • British millionaire businessman owner of Segway, Jimi Heselden, is found dead at age 62 at the bottom of a cliff in a river near Leeds, England with one of the two-wheeled electric scooters near his body. Heselden was also chairman of Hesco Bastion. [35]

  • Price of an ounce of gold passes US$1300 for the first time, closing at $1306.60 an ounce in New York. [539.46]
  • Seven people are reported to have been killed and around 100 are missing after a landslide in Oaxaca, Mexico. [615]

  • David Johnson is sworn in as the 28th Governor General of Canada. [105]

  • In Petarukan in Central Java, Indonesia, a train crashes into another parked at a railway station, killing at least 36 people and injuring dozens. [105]

  • Netherlnds Antilles dissolves, creating independent nations Curaçao and Sint Maarten within the kingdom of the Netherlands, and the Caribbean Netherlands. [615] [622.3] [725.8] [1112.2]

  • Thirty-three miners near Copiapó, Chile, trapped 700 metres underground in a mining accident in San José Mine, are brought back to the surface after surviving for a record 69 days. [615]

  • The International Space Station surpasses the record for the longest continuous human occupation of space, having been continuously inhabited since November 2, 2000 (3641 days). [615]

  • In preparation for the Seoul summit, finance ministers of the G-20 agree to reform the International Monetary Fund and shift 6 percent of the voting shares to developing nations and countries with emerging markets. [615]

  • An earthquake and consequent tsunami off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, kills over 400 people and leave hundreds missing. [615]
  • Venezuelan government expropriates the 200th business of 2010, the Venezuelan subsidiary of Ameican glass-maker Owens-Illinois, alleging exploitation of its dominant market position. [634.44]
  • The Singapore Exchange announces it will acquire the Australian Securities Exchange for about US$8.3 billion. [802.78]

  • (to October 31) The Joburg 2010 stamp show is held in South Africa. Included is a 90-feet wide by 20-feet high stamp mosaic created from 201,000 cancelled South Africa stamps. The mosaic established a new record with the Guiness World Records. [1482.19]

  • Suicide bomber in town north of Baghdad, Iraq, kills 25. [635.9]

  • In Iraq, insurgents occupy a church in Baghdad; the churchis stormed by seurity forces, resulting in over 52 dead. [635.9]
  • Dilma Rousseff is elected President of Brazil, defeating José Serra of the Party of Brazillian Social Democracy, 56 to 44 percent. [632.45] [635.49]

  • A series of bomb attacks take place in Iraq; 40 are killed in Baghdad. [635.9]

  • The US Federal Reserve announces it will start a second round of Quantitative Easing, buying US$600 bilion of Treasury debt over eight months. [632.18] [635.89]

  • Aero Caribbean Flight 883 crashes in central Cuba, killing all 68 people on board. [615]

  • Researchers at CERN trap 38 antihydrogen atoms for a sixth of a second, marking the first time in history that humans have trapped antimatter. [615]
