  • The Soviet Union launches Soyuz 5, which docks with Soyuz 4 in orbit. It is the first-ever docking of two manned spacecraft, and the first-ever transfer of crew from one space vehicle to another. [1] [5]

  • In Celebes Island, a magnitude 6.9 earthquake occurs. In area of Madjene, 64 people were killed, 97 injured, and over 1,200 buildings were wrecked. A tsunami was generated that reached about 4 metres height along the coastal villages north of Madjene. The tsunami reportedly took 600 lives. [53]
