  • The New York World's Fair opens in Flushing Meadow, Corona Park, New York, held for the 300th anniversary of New York City. US President Lyndon Johnson opens the fair, which covers over 646 acres of land. Theme of the fair is "Peace Through Understanding". Walt Disney's WED company constructed pavilions for: Ford (Magic Skyway), General Electric (Progressland), the state of Illinois (Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln), and Pepsi-Cola / UNICEF (It's a Small World).   • Tanganyika and Zanzibar form the United Republic of Tanganyika and Zanzibar. [285.413,1181]

  • Japan joins OECO. [1]

  • At Dartmouth College, in Hanover, New Hampshire, the BASIC programming language runs for the first time. The language was developed by professors John Kemeny and Thomas Kurtz, BASIC is an acronym for Beginners All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code. It is based on FORTRAN and Algol, and was developed for a General Electric 225 mainframe computer. [1] [4]

  • In the Sea of Japan, 50km north of Niigata, Japan, a magnitude 7.5 earthquake occurs. 3,534 houses destroyed, 11,000 houses damaged. A tsunami generated by the earthquake ravages the west coast of Honshu. [1] [53]
