  • The United States Postal Service announces a stamp to commemorate the first landing on the Moon. A record 8,743,070 requests are received for first day covers. [270.499]

  • David Bowie's single, "Space Oddity" is released to coincide with the first lunar landing. [1] [457]

  • Russia launches unmanned Luna 15 to Moon. [1]

  • "Futbol War" between El Salvador and Honduras begins. [1]

  • Apollo 11 takes off from Kennedy Space Center with astronauts Neil Armstrong, Edwin Aldrin Junior, and Michael Collins aboard. [1] [129]

  • In the morning in China, workers of the Tientsin Zoo discover unusual behavior in many kinds of animals: swans abruptly left the water, a Manchurian tiger stopped pacing in his cage, a Tibetan yak collapsed, and a panda held its head in its paws and moaned. They report to the city's Earthquake Office, then at noon, a magnitude 7.3 earthquake occurs at Pohai. [53]
July 20
  • Lunar module Eagle, manned by Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin separates from the command module of Apollo 11, and lands on the Moon 2.5 hours later. Armstrong radios Mission Control in Houston, Texas, "The Eagle has landed." [5] [129]
  • At 10:56 p.m. EDT, American astronaut Neil Armstrong, 240,000 miles from Earth, speaks these words to more than a billion people listening at home: "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." Stepping off the lunar landing module Eagle, Armstrong became the first human to walk on the surface of the moon. Edwin Aldrin joins him 11:11 p.m., and the two take photographs, plant a U.S. flag, run scientific tests, and leave a plaque that reads: "Here men from the planet Earth first set foot on the moon - July 1969 A.D. - We came in peace for all mankind."   • In Central Peru, a magnitude 5.9 earthquake occurs. Much damage, but no fatalities. [53]

  • In Yangjiang, Guangdong, China, a magnitude 5.9 earthquake occurs, killing about 3,000 people. More than 10,700 houses collapsed and about 36,000 were severely damaged in Yangjiang County. [53]

  • Pioneer 10 launched. [1]

  • Mariner 6 begins transmitting far-encounter photos of Mars. [1]

  • In Andreevka, USSR a building is hit by a falling meteorite. [521]

  • Death of Sharon Tate, actress, killed by Charles Manson's gang. [1]

  • British troops intervene militarily in Northern Ireland. [1]
  • The Woodstock Music and Art Fair opens in New York State (Max Yasgur's Dairy Farm). An estimated 400,000 people turn out over three days to hear more than thirty acts, including the Jefferson Airplane, The Grateful Dead, and Jimi Hendrix. [457]

  • Death of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe AKA Ludwig Mies in Chicago, Illinois, USA; architect (director of Bauhaus in Dessau, Armour Institute in Chicago, Lake Shore Drive Apartments in Chicago, Seagram Building in New York City (1956-58), Bacardi Building in Mexico City (1961), Federal Center in Chicago (1964), Public Library in Washington D.C. (1967), New National Gallery in Berlin (1968)). [37]

  • Hurricane Camille strikes U.S. Gulf Coast; kills 255. [1]

  • In Suchy Dul, Czechoslovakia a building is hit by a falling meteorite. [521]

  • Parliamentary elections are held in Federal Republic of Germany. The CDU/CSU gets 46.1 percent of the vote, the SPD 42.7 percent and the FDP 5.8 percent. The FDP joins the SPD in a coalition and Willy Brandt becomes the first SPD chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany. [37]

  • In South Africa, a magnitude 6.3 earthquake occurs. [53]

  • The Concorde supersonic transport plane breaks the sound barrier for the first time. [5]
