  • Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko dissolves the Ukrainian Parliament following defections that increased the majority of his opponents. It has been nicknamed the "Second Orange Revolution". [38]
  • A French TGV train on the LGV Est high speed line sets an official new world speed record. [5]

  • Iran announces it will release the British sailors and marines that they captured on March 23. The captives arrive back in the UK the next day. [38]
  • NATO and Afghan forces retake a key town from the Taliban in Sangin in southern Helmand Province, Afghanistan. [38]

  • Local government elections in Scotland and most of England. The Scottish National Party becomes the largest party in Scotland for the first time in their history. [38] [188.66]
  • The Royal Canadian Mint produces the first 100-kilogram gold coin with $1,000,000 face value, 53 cm in diameter, to celebrate the new $200 Maple Leaf gold coin with the world's highest purity, 0.99999 fine. Value of the gold in the coin is about US$2.6 million. [408.72]

  • Executive Directive 51, which specifies the procedures for continuity of the federal government of the United States in the event of a "catastrophic emergency" is signed by President George W. Bush. [38]
  • Tornado strikes Greensburg, Kansas, killing at least 12 and destroying about 90 percent of the town. [38]

  • In the aftermath of Greece's worst heatwave in a century, at least eleven people are reported dead from heatstroke, approximately 200 wildfires break out nationwide, and the country's electricity grid nearly collapses due to record breaking demand. [38]
