  • Daylight meteor seen from Utah to Canada. Only known case of a meteor entering the Earth's atmosphere and leaving it again. [1]

  • Radio Free Asia (South Korea) begins radio transmission. [1]

  • Pioneer 7 launched into solar orbit. [1]

  • In Varto, Turkey, a magnitude 6.8 earthquake occurs. 2,500 fatalities, 1,500 injuries, 108,000 persons homeless. Twenty or more villages were completely razed in the provinces of Bingol, Erzurum, and Mus. [53]

  • Lunar Orbiter 1 takes first photograph of Earth from Moon. [1]

  • Gemini XI is launched, the penultimate mission of NASA's Gemini program, and the current human altitude record holder (except for the Apollo lunar missions). [1] [5]
  • In Truckee, California, a magnitude 5.9 earthquake occurs. Minor but extensive fractures in the ground, dams, pipelines, bridges, highways, rail lines. [53]
