  • Soviet Party Congress unanimously approves a resolution removing Josef Stalin's body from Lenin's tomb in Red Square. [1]
  • The Soviet Union detonates its hydrogen bomb, Tsar Bomba, over Novaya Zemlya. At 58 megatons, it remains the largest explosive device ever detonated (as of about 2006). [1] [5]
