  • The Saint Louis Rams win the NFL Championship for the first time since 1951, defeating the Tennessee Titans 23-16 in Super Bowl XXXIV at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, Georgia. [21]

  • In Seattle, Washington, the Kingdome sports arena is demolished into a mound of rubble over 65 feet high, to make way for a new stadium. [21] [56]

  • America's Cup 2000 sailing race is retained by Team New Zealand near Auckland. Prada Challenge 2000 lost 0-5 in a "best-of-9". [21]

  • Hansie Cronje, cricketer of South Africa, confesses to having accepted money from Indian bookmakers to manipulate a number of South Africa's international cricket matches. [565.328]

  • The New Jersey Devils defeat the defending champion Dallas Stars 2-1 in double overtime in Game six of the 2000 Stanley Cup Finals to win their second Stanley Cup Championship. [21]

  • The Oakland Athletics beat the Kansas City Royals 21-3; the 18-run difference is largest margin of victory for the Athletics and the largest margin of defeat for the Royals in the teams' respective histories. [56]

  • The Los Angeles Lakers defeat the Indiana Pacers 116-111 in Game 6 of the 2000 NBA Finals, winning the series. [21]

  • Derek Jeter and the New York Yankees finalize a $189 million, 10-year contract, making Jeter the second highest paid player in the history of the sport. [56]

  • The East beats the West 111-110 in the 50th NBA All Star Game in Washington, DC. [22]

  • During an exhibition baseball game between the San Francisco Giants and the Arizona Diamondbacks, Randy Johnson's fastball hits and instantly kills a dove flying in front of home plate. The bird appears to explode as the pitch sends it over the catcher's head. [56]

  • Todd Helton signs a nine-year, $141.5 million contract extension with the Colorado Rockies. [56]

  • The first Major League Baseball game is played in Puerto Rico, as the Toronto Blue Jays defeat the Texas Rangers 8-1. [56]

  • The Cincinnati Reds defeat the Pittsburgh Pirates 8-2 in the first game at PNC Park, the first two-deck stadium built in the U.S. since Milwaukee County Stadium opened in 1953. [22]

  • San Diego Padres' outfielder Rickey Henderson breaks the career walks record established by Babe Ruth when he receives his 2,063rd base on balls. [56]

  • A soccer game stampede in Ghana kills over 120. [22]

  • With a home run in his 57th game, Barry Bonds becomes the fastest player ever to hit 30 home runs. [56]

  • The Colorado Avalanche win their second Stanley Cup Championship with a 3-1 victory in Game 7 of the 2001 Stanley Cup Finals over the defending champion New Jersey Devils at Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado. [22]

  • The Los Angeles Lakers beat the Philadelphia 76ers 4-1 to win their second straight NBA Title. They also finish with the best overall record in playoff history, 15-1. [22]

  • A.S.Roma wins the scudetto (Italian championship). [22]

  • With his 38th homerun of the season, Barry Bonds breaks the major league record for home runs hit before the All-Star game. [56]
July 13
  • Beijing wins the bid to host the 2008 Summer Olympics. [22]

  • The Cleveland Indians defeat the Seattle Mariners 15-14 in a record-setting baseball game known as the Impossible Return. [22]

  • Black Betsy, Shoeless Joe Jackson's 40-ounce warped hickory bat, is won in a 10-day eBay auction. The $577,610 price tag is believed to be the largest amount ever paid for a baseball bat. [56]
September 6
  • Barry Bonds becomes the fifth major leaguer to hit 60 home runs in a season, reaching the milestone in the shortest time, just 141 games. [56]
September 13
  • Due the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, Major League Baseball postpones all games through September 17. [56]
September 21
  • Sports return to New York for the first time since the terrorist attacks with the New York Mets/Atlanta Braves game at Shea Stadium. Mike Piazza hits a two-run home run in the 8th inning off Steve Karsay to win the game 3-2. [22]
October 4
  • Rickey Henderson of the San Diego Padres breaks Ty Cobb's record to become the leading run-scorer in baseball history, with 2,246th runs. [56]
October 5
  • The Atlanta Braves defeat the Florida Marlins 20-3 to clinch the National League East title and becomes the first team in professional sports to win 10 consecutive division titles. [56]
  • Barry Bonds of the San Francisco Giants breaks the single season home run record with his 71st and 72nd home runs of the year. Both are off pitcher Chan Ho Park of the Los Angeles Dodgers. [22] [56]
  • The Seattle Mariners break the Major League Baseball record for wins in a season set by the 1998 New York Yankees, winning their 115th game, defeating the Texas Rangers at Safeco Field. The Mariners finish the season 116-46. [22]
October 6
  • The Seattle Mariners tie the 1906 Chicago Cubs with 116 wins in a single season for winningest team in major league history. [56]
October 14
  • Michael Schumacher wins the 52nd FIA Formula One World Championship, with a record margin of 58 points. [22]
October 15
  • The Arizona Diamondbacks win the National League Division Series beating the Saint Louis Cardinals. [56]
  • The New York Yankees beat the Oakland Athletics to win the American League Division Series. [56]
November 1
  • Derek Jeter hits the Major League Baseball's first November home run at the World Series. [22]

  • The Arizona Diamondbacks beat the three-time defending World Series Champions New York Yankees in seven games to win their first ever baseball World Series Championship. [22] [56]
