  • At the Cobo Center in Detroit, Michigan, the North American International Automobile Show is held, over nine days. General Motors debuts the CERV III (No. 3). The car's mid-engine V-8 is a 5.7-litre 32-valve, dual-overhead cam LT5, with twin turbos, intercooler, aluminum block and cylinder heads, giving it 650-hp and a top speed of 225-MPH. The car also features active suspension, four-wheel steering, and a body made of carbon fiber, Kevlar, Nomex, and aluminum honeycomb.   • In Cypress Gardens, Florida, the 12th annual NCRS Winter Regional meet is held, over three days.   • Capital Records releases the Beach Boys album Still Cruisin'. The record cover features a close-up of the hood of a 1967 427-ci Corvette. Lyrics to the song "In My Car" include "Fantasy car, shiny Corvette; let's take a ride you can't forget". [311.12]

  • Over two days at the Firestone Test Center near Fort Stockton, Texas, a team of drivers break or set a dozen land speed records with a 1989 Corvette ZR-1 and a Corvette L-98. Cars are in near stock condition, minus mufflers and catalytic converters. Distance record set are for 100-, 500-, 1000-, and 5000-mile, and 100-, 500-, 1000-, and 5000-kilometre. Time records set are for 1-, 6-, 12-, and 24-hours. Average speed for all record runs are 170-175 MPH. The ZR-1 sets the 24-hour record, driving over 4200 miles at an average 175-mph.   • Chevrolet builds 80 special edition Indianapolis Festival Corvettes, to complement the Beretta Indianapolis 500 pace car. 50 are turquoise color for use by Festival Committee, the other 30 are yellow for race officials at the track. Due to lack of a back seat, the cars are not used, with Z-24 convertibles substituted. The 80 cars are sold via dealers as used Corvettes. [206.56]

  • At the Sears Point Raceway, in California, round one of the SCCA Escort World Challenge series is held.
    • Finishing 2nd is the Bakeracing #4 Corvette, driven by Bobby Carradine and Lou Gigliotti.

    • Finishing 4th is the Powell Motorsports #50 Corvette, driven by Claude Poirier and R.K. Smith.

  • At the McLean County Fairgrounds in Bloomington, Illinois, the Bloomington Gold / Corvettes USA show is held, over four days. 154 1965 Corvettes are included in the Silver Salute. 113 of 151 Corvettes judged are awarded Gold Certification. New judging class for this year is the Survivor award for well-kept but unrestored Corvettes. The Special Collection VII is titled "The Challengers - Corvette vs. The World". Auction highlights:
    • 1965 convertible with fuel-injection US$65,000;

  • At the Michigan International Speedway in Jackson, Michigan, Chevrolet introduces the 1991 Corvette. It features 245-hp L98 engine, optional 375-hp LT5 engine, new wheels, new side gills, under-body side moldings, and rounded square tail lights are standard for all models. [312.54]
  • Chevrolet general manager Jim Perkins successfully argues within General Motors that the Corvette program should not be cut, and that the Corvette should remain within Chevrolet. [137.93]
  • Dick Balsey, of Chevrolet's Advanced Vehicle Engineering group, discovers the XP-895 mid-engined Corvette test car, while researching designs for CERV III. Dave McLellan gives him permission to do anything with the car except destroy it. [175.28]

  • The September issue of Motor Trend magazine presents its Bank for the Buck article. In overall performance scoring, 1st is Nissan 300zx Turbo, 2nd is Corvette. In Bang for the Buck scoring (performance per dollar), Corvette ranks 15th. [667.45]
