DJML Face To Face

DJML Logo This page is a service to the DJML community. The DJML (Dixieland Jazz Mailing List) members often meet at festivals and other events where they can meet face to face. This page is a place where the advertisements for these meetings can be viewed. When a festival approaches, usually someone asks if anyone else on the list is interested in getting together. After the particulars are hammered out, send the specifics to Gene & Betty Lynch (BettyLynch@aol.com) and we'll put the information online here.

Note that listings in red have already happened and they are listed here only to give people an idea of what meetings they missed this year and can look forward to next year.

12th Annual Great Connecticut Traditional Jazz Festival Moodus, CT

The Great Connecticut Traditional Jazz Festival invites all DJML members to the second annual Face to Face. It will take place at Venue 5 (same as last year) at the Sunrise Resort from 5:30 - 7:00 PM on August 7, 1998. Beer, wine and soda will be available. We spread out the time a little for those attending the Smorgasbord or Igor's BBQ. The music in all tents will commence at 7:00 PM.

First Annual DJML Sacramento Jazz Jubilee F2F Get-Away Breakfast

The FIRST, FIRST ANNUAL DJML SACRAMENTO JAZZ JUBILEE F2F GET-AWAY BREAKFAST will take place Monday May 25 at 9:00 A.M. at LaBou. This will be your last chance to say good bye to new and old friends, lie about how many standing ovations you received, lie about the amount of alcohol that you were able to consume during the weekend, discuss alternate Seinfeld endings, talk behind Ev Farey's back and find your wife (who has been missing for 3 days). LaBou is located in the downtown Plaza, (K St. Mall) Cafe Terraces, next to United Artists, near Macy's. LaBou has all varieties of heavy duty coffee, great homemade croissants, and other stuff like cinnamon buns. There's unlimited space. Lots of tables inside and out. Weather permitting, we'll congregate at the outside tables. Parking is validated, down a couple of levels - Drive in from J street. The Jubilee Shuttle starts running at 8:00 A.M. on Monday and stops on the south side of Jay street, between 3rd and 4th. Walk East on Jay past 4th, to the South East corner of 4th and Jay. Go South (right), on 4th, one-half block to a flight of 38 stairs, with three landings. Go up the stairs. Top of the stairs, you're on the second deck of the Plaza. Walk south another half block, you're at the entrance to the Plaza, at Johnny Rocket's, (a new retro 50's hamburger joint.) Turn left, which is East, past the Johnny Rockets corner, past United Artists Theatres, past the exit to UA Theatres, and you're at the entrance to the Terrace Cafes. Go in, left, and LaBou Counter is seventy-five feet straight ahead. Make your purchase inside and then come outside to join the group.

French Quarter F2F - New Orleans, LA

The biggest bandstand is in Jackson Square, and the Opening Ceremony is at 12:30, Friday April 17, followed by Tim Laughlin's group. (Tim is a SuPeR clarinet player). Some of us will be in the middle of the square about noon. However, there will be a brass band parading from Iberville & Bourbon Sts to Jackson Square starting at 11:30, and there are a number who plan to second-line behind the band to the square; so if you want to follow the parade, be at Iberville & Bourbon at 11:30. If you can't make that, we'll be at Jackson Square from about noon. Another general place where you can sit, get a soda (with or without reinforcement), go potty, leave messages, or whatever, is Johnny White's on St. Peter St across from Pat O'brien's. (No commercial interest). At night, you can probably find a lot of us at Fritzells, 733 Bourbon St. For a schedule of performers, there is a website at French Quarter Festivals, Inc

25th Annual Jazzaffair - Three Rivers, CA

All DJML members are invited to attend the "Face to Face" at the White Horse Inn outside venue, (River Terrace) down the hill from the Inn near the creek, a beautiful location if the weather is nice, and of course it will be. We'll be there with DJML T-shirts and badges Saturday, 4/18/98 at 10 AM, and we hope that a multitude of you folks will be too.

For further inquiries, email Gene & Betty Lynch (BettyLynch@aol.com)

13th Annual Desert Festival - Cathedral City, CA

All DJML members are invited to attend the "Face to Face" on the veranda of the Desert Princess Club House (building is separate from the hotel) which faces the lawn and driving range at 10 AM Saturday morning March 21, 1998. If the weather doesn't clem, we'll be at the bar area inside the clubhouse.

Dixieland Monterey, CA

All DJML members are invited to attend the "Face to Face" at the 18th Annual Dixieland Monterey in Monterey, California at the Doubletree Lobby Bar at 10:30am, Saturday, 3/7/98. The lobby bar is about halfway between the main entrance to the Doubletree and the door that leads to the plaza and Fisherman's Wharf; just down about three steps (or a ramp) on the left. Can't miss it.

The bar is fairly small, but is Bloody Mary capable, and there is ample room in the adjacent lobby for the hordes of you we expect to show up. Music starts at 10 Saturday, but we expect that 9 would be unacceptable to many (and us). If the talented among us have 10 o'clock gigs, perhaps we can keep it alive so they can join after. There is also a parade sometime Saturday, but perhaps someone will rain on it.

For further inquiries, email Gene & Betty Lynch (BettyLynch@AOL.COM)

Mardi Gras Dixieland Festival, Pismo Beach, CA

We'll meet at the Sky Room at the Edgewater on Wadsworth at the beach at 9:30 AM on Saturday, 2/21/98. That's a little early (at least for us), but we think the music starts at 10, and this will give those who have to play that set (the guys who played the last set on Friday) a chance to stop by and say hello. Hope to see a bunch of you there.

Suncoast Dixieland Jazz Classic, Clearwater, FL

We'll meet in the lobby of the Sheraton Sand Key on Saturday, Nov. 22, 1997 at noon and, depending on (1) the weather (it's colder 'n usual here in Florida right now) and (2) the number of people involved, hopefully will move to a different spot. If you will be attending the "Classic" either as a performer or fan please please send me a quick e-mail so we can have name-tags ready for the occasion.

For further inquiries, email Carol Thompson (pinaner@scfn.thpl.lib.fl.us )

It'd be nice if some of you musicians would bring along your axes (there'll be a piano and drums set up) and maybe we could have a little farewell jam in Peter's honor. I think he'd like that.

Sweet and Hot Music Festival, Los Angeles, CA

All DJML members are invited to attend the Sweet Hot Music Festival in Los Angeles, CA. on Saturday August 30,1997 at 10:30AM in the Lobby bar. The lobby is above the ballroom floor, where most of the venues are, and the bar is in a large conversation pit a few steps down from the walkway East of the registration desk, near the front doors.

We'll be there with T-Shirts, badges and broad smiles and hope that the multitude of DJML'ers who are bound to attend this great festival will be there too - with smiles, badges and T-Shirts optional.

Don't know about a meet all 4 days, but the festival usually starts Friday Noon at the marvelous pool venue, and we plan to be there in bathing suits and maybe badges if we can stand the pain.

The Great Connecticut Traditional Jazz Festival

The DJML Face to Face will take place at Bandstand #5 on Friday, August 1, 1997 from 6:00PM to 7:00PM. A bartender will be available for beer, wine, soda, etc.

Unfortuneately this does overlap with the Smorgasbord, but this is the only time available. If we schedule it earlier, it will be a "dry" Face to Face. If later, we will be in the thick of the Festival. Maybe those Smorgasborders can chow down at 5:30 and then walk off the wine and food and join us at Bandstand #5. We will be there until 7:00.

For further inquiries, email Gayle Wennerberg (GWennerb@limra.com)
