  • (to June 9) Houston, Texas is devastated by flooding when Tropical Storm Allison produces 36 inches (900 mm) of rain. Particularly hard hit are the downtown area and the Texas Medical Center, which loses years of research and data and thousands of lab animals. Twenty-two people die; damage exceeds US$5 billion. [22]

  • Hurricane Michelle hits Cuba, destroying crops and thousands of homes. [22]

  • Heavy rains and mudslides in Algeria kill more than 900 people. [22]

  • A new world-record high barometric pressure of 1085.6 hPa (32.06 inHg) is recorded in Tosontsengel, Khövsgöl Province, Mongolia. [22]

  • The Old Man of the Mountain, a rock formation in New Hampshire, USA, crumbles after heavy rain. [24]

  • (to May 10) A severe weather outbreak spawns more tornadoes than any week in U.S. history; 393 tornadoes are reported in 19 states. [24]

  • The largest hailstone ever recorded falls in Aurora, Nebraska. [24]
August 10
  • The United Kingdom reaches a record-high temperature, the first time breaking 38.5 degrees C (101.3 degrees Fahrenheit), at Brogdale near Faversham in Kent. [5] [24]

  • A heat wave in Paris causes temperatures up to 44 degrees C (112 degrees F). [24]
August 16
  • The 2003 Okanagan Mountain Park Fire spreads quickly on the outskirts of Kelowna, British Columbia, threatening to engulf the largest town in B.C.'s interior. [24]

  • Hurricane Isabel makes landfall as a Category 2 Hurricane on North Carolina's Outer Banks. It will directly kill 16 people in the Mid-Atlantic area. [24]

February 13
  • Athens, Greece, is hit by a major blizzard which blankets the entire city for days, causing widespread havoc. [25]

  • (to February 20) A nor'easter blizzard devastates Atlantic Canada, dumping more than 95 centimetres on some areas. [25]

  • The first ever South Atlantic hurricane makes landfall in South Brazil on the state of Santa Catarina - the hurricane is dubbed Hurricane Catarina. [25]
August 13
  • Hurricane Charley kills 27 people in Florida after killing four in Cuba and one in Jamaica. Charley made landfall near Cayo Costa, Florida as a Category 4 hurricane. Charley is the most intense hurricane to strike the United States since Hurricane Andrew in 1992. [25]
August 16
  • Severe flooding occurs in the village of Boscastle in Cornwall, England. [25]
September 3
  • Hurricane Frances makes landfall in Florida. After killing two people in the Bahamas, Hurricane Frances kills ten people in Florida, two in Georgia and one in South Carolina. [25]
September 7
  • Hurricane Ivan passes directly over Grenada, killing 37 people. It passes over other Caribbean islands over the next two days, killing five people in Venezuela, four in the Dominican Republic, one in Tobago and 20 in Jamaica. [25]
September 16
  • Hurricane Ivan strikes Gulf Shores, Alabama, as a Category 3 storm, killing 25 in Alabama and Florida, becoming the third costliest hurricane in American history. [25]
September 17
  • Hurricane Jeanne leaves mudslides in Haiti, killing 3006. [25]
September 23
  • Tropical Storm Ivan, having come around and reformed in the Gulf of Mexico, makes its final landfall near Cameron, Louisiana, to little effect. In total, the storm will kill 92 people. [25]
September 25
  • Hurricane Jeanne makes landfall near Port Saint Lucie, Florida, near location Hurricane Frances hit two weeks earlier. Jeanne kills over 3,030, mostly in Haiti. [25]
December 25
  • An historic and unprecedented snowfall occurs over portions of southern Texas during the early morning hours. Daily totals include 1.5 inches at Brownsville, 3.5 inches at McAllen, 4.4 inches at Corpus Christi, and 12.1 inches at Victoria. [25]

2005

January 8
  • Over night, violent storm Gudrun sweeps across the southern half of Sweden, the worst storm in the country since 1969, and one of the worst natural catastrophes in recorded Swedish history. Storm gusts reached 150 km/hour, knocking down 250 million trees, the equivalent of a year's normal harvest of 80 million cubic metres throughout the country. Seven die in the storm, another nine die in clean-up work. 500,000 households are left with no electricity, and the Öresund bridge is closed to road traffic. [7]
January 9
  • The same storm which pounded the U.S. earlier in the month hits England, Scandinavia, and the Baltic States, leaving 13 dead with widespread flooding and power cuts. [26]
May 15
  • A passenger ferry capsizes and sinks in strong winds in the Bura Gauranga River in Bangladesh, leaving over 100 people missing. [26]
July 10
  • Hurricane Dennis strikes near Navarre Beach, Florida as a Category 3 storm, killing ten people after killing over 50 people in the Caribbean. [26]
July 26
  • Mumbai and the Mumbai Conurbation area are submerged in 5-7 feet of water due to heavy rains, making nearby dams release water causing a massive flood, which virtually stops the financial capital of India for 4-5 days. [26]
August 29
  • At least 1,836 are killed, and severe damage is caused along the U.S. Gulf Coast, as Hurricane Katrina strikes coastal areas from Louisiana to Alabama, and travels up the entire state of Mississippi (flooding coast 31 feet/10 m), affecting most of eastern North America. [26] [68.29]
September 24
  • Hurricane Rita hits the U.S. Gulf Coast, devastating areas near Beaumont, Texas and Lake Charles, Louisiana. The New Orleans's 9th Ward re-floods since Katrina, and Mississippi and Alabama are also affected. [26]

  • Hurricane Stan hits Mexico and Central America, killing over 1,620 people. [26]
October 19
  • Hurricane Wilma swells into a Category 5 storm. [26]
October 20
  • Hurricane Wilma enters the Mexican Caribbean, passing through Cozumel and then the Yucatán Peninsula, staying over Cancún for over 60 hours. [26]

  • Tropical Storm Alpha forms, making the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season the most active on record. [26]

  • Hurricane Wilma makes landfall in southwestern Florida as a category 3 hurricane. [26]

  • Hurricane Epsilon dies in the eastern Atlantic Ocean. It becomes the longest-lived December hurricane on record and ties for second-place strongest December hurricane. [26]

  • Sydney, Australia, has its hottest day on record, when the city swelters in 45 degree C heat. [27]

  • The record-breaking 2005 Atlantic hurricane season officially draws to a close as Tropical Storm Zeta dissipates. [27]

  • Tropical Cyclone Larry makes landfall in Queensland, Australia. [27]
July 21
  • Saint Louis, Missouri, is hit by two major derechos (violent windstorms) in a span of three days. [27]
November 7
  • The Japanese town of Saroma, Hokkaido is struck by a tornado, killing nine. It is the deadliest tornado in Japan since 1941. [27]
November 30
  • Typhoon Durian triggers a massive mudslide and kills hundreds of people in the Philippines. [27]

  • According to the Met Office, England experienced its warmest year since records began in 1659 with an average temperature of 10.82 degrees C. [27]

January 18
  • The strongest storm in the UK for 17 years kills 14 people, and Germany sees the worst storm since 1999 with 13 deaths. Hurricane Kyrill causes at least 44 deaths across 20 countries in Western Europe. Other losses include the Container Ship MSC Napoli destroyed by the storm off the coast of Devon, England. [38]

  • Three tornadoes cross a 70-mile path across Florida, USA, killing 21, injuring 100, destroying 1500 homes and mobile homes. [38] [290.18]

  • State of Emergency is declared in Indonesia after 'El Nino'-like flooding. [38]
May 4
  • Tornado strikes Greensburg, Kansas, killing at least 12 and destroying about 90 percent of the town. [38]
May 9
  • Subtropical storm Andrea forms off the coast of Florida, the earliest subtropical storm since Ana in 2003. [38]
June 6
  • Twelve people are killed by cyclone Gonu in Oman. [38]
June 22
  • A Force 5 tornado tears through Elie, Manitoba, Canada; no injuries are reported. [38]
June 25
  • Intense heatwaves begin to hit Southeast Europe as temperatures reach 46 celcius in Bulgaria and Greece. [38]
  • In England, following the wettest June on record, Sheffield and South Yorkshire are affected by flooding. Much of Sheffield, Doncaster and Rotherham is flooded when the River Don breaches its banks. [38]

  • In the aftermath of Greece's worst heatwave in a century, at least eleven people are reported dead from heatstroke, approximately 200 wildfires break out nationwide, and the country's electricity grid nearly collapses due to record breaking demand. [38]

  • Torrential rains cause the onset of the 2007 Sudan floods, the worst in the Sudan's history. [38]

  • While celebrating Argentinean Independence Day, snow falls in Buenos Aires for the first time in almost 100 years. [38]

  • Floods cause chaos through wide areas of Britain, especially the counties of Gloucestershire, Warwickshire, Worcestershire and Oxfordshire, leaving hundreds homeless and thousands of vehicles stranded on major roads. [38]
August 18
  • Typhoon Sepat makes landfall in eastern Taiwan. [38]
August 21
  • Hurricane Dean, a powerful Category 5 storm, slams into a sparsely populated area of the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico. Hundreds of Mayan village houses are destroyed. [38] [68.36]

  • Northeast Nicaragua takes a direct hit from Hurricane Felix. The hurricane is a strong Category 5 storm when it reaches the coast. [38]

  • Typhoon Wipha hits Fuding, China. Authorities had evacuated over two million people prior to the storm's landfall. [38]

  • Georgia's governor Sonny Perdue declares a state of emergency due to drought conditions. [38]
  • (to November 9) Wildfires in Southern California result in the evacuation of more than one million people and destruction of over 1,600 homes and businesses. Total damage estimate is US$1 billion. [38] [191.37]

  • China's worst snowstorm since 1954 kills 133, delays traffic, and causes massive power outages in central and southern parts of the country. [310]

  • (to February 6) A tornado outbreak, the deadliest in 23 years, kills 58 in the Southern United States. [310]

  • Over 60 tornadoes across the US South in two days kill 48 and injure over 150. [35]
March 7
  • A dozen tornadoes cause much damage in northern Florida and southern Georgia. Cars are flipped, trees and power poles knocked down, homes and businesses damaged, and two people are killed. [35]

  • In western Austria, over 60 vehicles are involved in a highway accident, caused by poor visibility in a major snowstorm. One person is dead, 30 are injured. [57]
May 3
  • Tropical cyclone Nargis passes through western Myanmar killing over 140,000 people and destroying thousands of homes. Winds reached 120 mph and tidal waves reached 12 feet high. 2-3 million residents are left homeless. This is the country's deadliest natural disaster ever in recorded history. May 11

  • Typhoon Morakot hits Taiwan, killing 500 and stranding more than 1,000 via the worst flooding on the island in half a century. [398]

March 3
  • Two people are killed and 14 injured as giant 8m high waves slam into the Cypriot-owned Louis Majesty cruise ship off the coast of north-east Spain in the Mediterranean. [57] [339]
  • About 300 people are killed after heavy rain causes a series of landslides in the mountainous eastern region of Bududa in Uganda. [57]
April 7
  • Landslides and floods from the heaviest downpours in four decades in the Rio de Janiero area of Brazil leave at least 110 people dead. [57]
May 4
  • 13 inches of rain falls on Nashville, Tennessee, over two days, close to doubling the previous rainfall record. A levee protecting the southern park of the city is breached, causing parts of Nashville to be evacuated. 17 deaths are killed in Tennessee, mostly from drowning in flash floods. [57]
June 16
  • At least 19 people are killed by flash floods of up to 40cm of rain in south-eastern France in the Cote D'Azur region, the worst since 1827. [57]
June 20
  • Rain and landslides in southern China kill 132 people, with 86 others missing. An estimated 68,000 houses are damaged and 800,000 residents are evacuated. [57]
June 23
  • Following a week of rain, Alagoas and Pernambuco states in north-east Brazil see flooding that destroys entire villages, and forces over 100,000 from their homes. 1000 are missing, with at least 42 known dead. [57]
July 14
  • Heavy rain across southern and central China triggers landslides killing at least 37, with another 40 people missing. [57]
July 29
  • Heavy monsoon rains begin to cause widespread flooding in the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan. Over 1,600 are killed, and more than one million are displaced by the floods. [615]
August 14
  • An estimated 20 million people are left homeless in Pakistan following unusually heavy monsoon rains that began in late July, leading to devastating floods. At least 1,500 people have been killed and hundreds of thousands of homes have been swept away by the water. More than 700,000 hectares of farmland have been wiped out. [105]

July 31
  • In Thailand over 12.8 million people are affected by severe flooding. The World Bank estimates damages at 1,440 billion baht (US$45 billion). By the end of the yeay, some areas are still six - feet underwater, and many factory areas remained closed. 790 people are killed, with 58 of the country's 77 provinces affected. [808]

  • With 434 dead, the United Nations launches a $357 million appeal for victims of the 2011 Sindh floods in Pakistan. [808]

  • The death toll from the flooding of Cambodia's Mekong River and attendant flash floods reaches 207. [808]

  • Tropical Storm Washi causes 1,257 flash flood fatalities in the Philippines with 85 people officially listed as missing. [808]

October 24
  • (to October 30) Hurricane Sandy kills at least 209 people in the Caribbean, Bahamas, United States and Canada. Considerable storm surge damage causes major disruption to the eastern seaboard of the United States. [1014]

  • (to December 9) Typhoon Bopha, known as "Pablo" in the Philippines, kills at least 1,067 with around 838 people still missing. The typhoon causes considerable damage in the island of Mindanao. [1014]

November 8
  • Typhoon Haiyan ("Yolanda") hits the Philippines and Vietnam, causing devastation with at least 6,241 dead. [1208]

2015

June 1
  • The Oriental Star ferry on the Yangzi river in the People's Republic of China capsizes in a tornado. An estimated 400 people die. [1236.36]
October 23
  • Hurricane Patricia becomes the most intense hurricane ever recorded in the Western Hemisphere and the second strongest worldwide, with winds of 215 mph and a pressure of 872 mbar. [1233]

2017

August 25
  • (to August 30) Hurricane Harvey strikes the United States as a Category 4 hurricane, causing catastrophic damage to the Houston metropolitan area, mostly due to record-breaking floods. At least 108 deaths are recorded, and total damage reaches $125 billion, making Harvey the costliest natural disaster in United States history, tied with Hurricane Katrina in 2005. [1269]
September 6
  • (to September 10) The Caribbean and United States are struck by Hurricane Irma, a Category 5 hurricane that is the strongest hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic basin outside the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico. The storm causes at least 146 deaths and $64.2 billion in damage. [1269]
September 10
  • Hurricane Irma strikes Florida Keys islands as Category 4 storm. [1304.66]
September 19
  • (to September 20) Hurricane Maria makes landfall on Dominica as a Category 5 hurricane, and Puerto Rico as a Category 4 hurricane. Maria causes at least 112 deaths and damages estimated in excess of US$91.6 billion. [1269]

August 10
  • (to August 20) Heavy rainfall causes severe floods in the Indian state of Kerala. It is the worst flood to hit the state in a century. [1309]

  • The IPCC releases its Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5C, warning that "rapid, far-reaching and unprecedented changes in all aspects of society" are needed to ensure that global warming is kept below 1.5 degrees Celcius. [1309]
October 10
  • Hurricane Michael makes landfall at Mexico Beach, Florida, with winds of 155 mph and a minimum pressure of 919 mbar. It is the most intense hurricane to hit the mainland United States since Camille in 1969. [1309]

  • At the Katowice Climate Change Conference, nearly 200 nations agree to rules on implementing the 2015 Paris agreement. [1309]

  • A tsunami hits the Sunda Strait, Indonesia, killing at least 430 people and injuring nearly 1,500. [1309]

March 13
  • A winter storm completes its intensification over the Southern Rocky Mountains region, becoming a powerful cyclone and triggering severe blizzard conditions across much of the Southwestern and Central United States. [1368]

  • Cyclone Idai makes landfall on Mozambique, causing at least 1,073 fatalities, as well as causing mass flooding and power outages in southern Africa. [1368]
July 13
  • Hurricane Barry strikes the Gulf Coast, killing one and causing over US$500 million in damages. [1368]

  • Danish polar research institution Polar Portal reports a large spike in Greenland ice loss, with 11 billion tons melted in one day and 197 gigatonnes during the month of July. [1368]

  • 32 are killed and 1,000,000 evacuated as Typhoon Lekima makes landfall in Zhejiang, China. [1368]

  • Hurricane Laura makes landfall in Lake Charles, Louisiana with winds of 150 mph, making it the strongest hurricane to ever strike the state in terms of windspeed, tied with the 1856 Last Island Hurricane. [1384]

  • Typhoon Haishen makes landfall on Japan and then South Korea as a strong category 2-equivalent typhoon. [1384]
September 16
  • Hurricane Sally makes landfall on the Alabama coast as a high-end Category 2 hurricane, causing over $8 billion in damages and killing 8 people. [1384]

  • Heavy rains brought by tropical storm Linfa cause landslides at the Rao Trang 3 hydroelectric plant in Thua Thien Hue, Vietnam, killing 17 construction workers and 13 soldiers who were on a rescue mission. [1384]

  • Typhoon Goni makes landfall in the Philippines, becoming the strongest landfalling tropical cyclone in history, displacing hundreds of thousands of people and killing dozens of people in the region. [1384]
