The obverse shows King George VI, the first time in Canadian history for a non-reigning monarch to appear on a Canadian coin. This is also the first time the reigning monarch is intentionally not featured on a Canadian coin. [423.1]

  • An Italian court sentences ten former SS members to life imprisonment for merders committed in Marzabotta, near Bologna, between September 29 and October 5, 1944, by retreating Nazi troops. Up to 1800 civilians were massacred. Preparations of about 100 million euros is to be paid. [721.9]

  • The Japanese givernment announces it had ordered student textbook publishers to delete passages saying the Japanese army forced civilians to commit suicide at the end of the battle of Okinawa. [720.9]

  • In Bromley-by-Bow, London, England, a 2000-pound unexploded bomb from World War II is discovered during construction for the 2012 Olympic village. The bomb begins ticking when disturbed, and is then carefully defused over several days, with a 200-yard exclusion zone in place. This is the largest unexploded bomb found in London in 30 years.   • A World War II tank is discovered buried beneath a road in Chartres, France, believed to belonged to US 31st Tank Battalion, used in the June 1944 D-Day landings. [754.3]

  • The remains of more than 2,000 people discovered last October in Poland's largest mass grave from World War II are reburied in a military cemetery in north-west Poland, near the border between the countries.
