  • A military trial in Italy finds Erich Priebke guilty of the murder of 335 Italian civilians on March 24, 1944, in retaliation for the deaths of 32 German soldiers by the Italian resistance movement. Due to Italy's 30-year statute of limitations on murder, the murder conviction cannot be followed by a sentence. [683.A4]

  • Nauru issues two postage stamps marking the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II. [728.1145]

  • US oil tanker Montbello is discovered off Cambria, 170 miles south of San Francisco, California. Most of the cargo of 4.1 million gallons of crude oil is intact. The ship had been sunk by Japanese submarine torpedo in December 1941. [429.30]

  • The US Justice Department adds sixteen Japanese men to the list of persons barred from ever entering the US, due to the suspicion of their having medically experimented on prisoners or operating forced-sex camps during World War II. [430.A13]

  • The A-Bomb Dome in Hiroshima, Japan, is named a World Heritage site. The dome and main structure of the Hiroshima Promotion Hall survived the atomic bomb blast of 1945. [431.A10]

  • In Bonn, Germany, the Swiss National Bank publicly acknowledges that it had profited from wartime dealings in gold bullion with the German central bank, but that there is no evidence that the gold was stolen from Holocaust victims, and no gold in Swiss possession bears German stamps. Total value of wartime gold transactions was 1.2 million Swiss francs, with profit of about 20 million francs. [434.3]

  • The Finance Minister of the Netherlands government decides to open an investigation into the whereabouts of 75 metric tons of its gold reserves that were taken by Germany in the war, and not returned. 70 tons were allocated and returned to the Netherlands after the war from gold recovered by the Allies.   • Swedish Riksbank says it will investigate assertions by the World Jewish Congress that looted Nazi gold from Holocaust victims had been deposited in Swedish banks. [279.4]
  • German Foreign Minister Klaus Kinkel and Czech Foreign Minister Josef Zieleniec meet in Prague, and initial a document in which German appologizes for Adolf Hitler's invasion of Czechoslovakia, and the Czech Republic expresses regret for the postwar expulsion of Germans from the Sudetenland.   • In Prague, Czech Republic, Czech Prime Minister Vaclav Klaus and German Chancellor Helmut Kohl sign a document acknowledging wrongs each nation committed against each other bewteen 1938 and 1946. [593.A3]

  • The National Bank of Liberia releases a set of twelve $1 copper-nickel coins and twelve $10 0.999 fine silver coins to commemorate campaigns and battles of World War II. [547.27]

  • Netherlands isues two 80-cent postage stamps marking the 50th anniversary of the Marshall Plan for European reconstruction. [728.1184]
June 9
  • Gibraltar issues four postage stamps depicting World War II warships. [341.262]

  • In Belgium, the crash site of Halifax Bomber LW682 is excavated. The aircraft is found 20 feet under the marshy bog, with remains of three missing airmen in the wreckage. [4.12]
  • A memorial in Tavullia, near Rimini, Italy, is dedicated to the memory of Canadians who drove German forces out, restoring Italian freedom. [11.20]
October 20
  • In Ijzendijke, Netherlands, a monument is erected to the lives lost in an explosion at a British-Canadian armored camp on October 20, 1944. [569.66]
