High pressure Western Rivers engine

The HP engines used on theWestern Rivers (Misssippii) needed lots ofhigh pressure steam in a hurry.   The externally fired Flue boiler was used on most W.R. boats.

A low pressure paddle engine became very popular in U.S. inlets and lakes. The side lever engine was used in England.   The hp engin in one form or another remained popular untill of the era but compound and later triple expansion driving screws took over the oceans.
