I am only planning on coming for one day, what should I do. Stay longer. How do I get there? What is the best way?

Well, here is the best I can do.  We are not travel agents, but I will try.
You can bring a car only from Vancouver BC Via BC Ferries  http://www.bcferries.com/ or
from Anacortes via Washington State Ferries http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/ferries/,
or from Port Angeles via the Coho Ferry. http://cohoferry.com/main/   All will take your corolla....
You can come as a passenger only on the Clipper out of seattle. http://www.clippervacations.com/
As there are different fares for different vehicles (usually depending on length and height) and number of passengers, I will let you look that up, just so you get the info you want, rather than my guess.  When you get here you will need a place to stay overnight.  A couple of good B&B's are....they are away from high prices....http://www.dennistonbythesea.com/  and http://www.hemingwaysbythesea.com/
If you come only for a day, you will regret it for the rest of you life (trust me)... this is an exceptional place to visit.
If you would like to know what you can do with a child.....almost everything.  Most people go to Butchart Gardens: http://www.butchartgardens.com/index.php?option=com_frontpage&Itemid=1  it is lovely.   If you like Museums and/or get a crappy weather day, our Royal BC Museum and IMAX theatre is world class and there is a special show on called Treasures:  which includes stuff from the London Museum on tour only to two places in North America....http://www.royalbcmuseum.bc.ca/MainSite/default.aspx
Whale watching is fun....if you do that with a baby, then take one of the covered boats...hopefully they will not charge for an infant...most don't.
http://tourismmall.victoria.bc.ca/whales.htm  will get you to the whales.
You might want to do a city tour...take an open air double decker bus (catch those downtown by the Inner Harbour)......
To the East of the City is Mount Baker, to the South are the majestic Olympic Mountains in Washington State and Juan de Fuca Strait....to the West are the Sooke Wilderness Hills.....surrounded by beauty....
You can also shop in Old town, which is Government Street...right near the Inner Harbour.....
There are tons of other things to do as well....read here....http://tourismmall.victoria.bc.ca/victoria-activities.htm  or http://tourismmall.victoria.bc.ca/victoria-attractions.html

I don't know how old your child is, but a walk through Beacon Hill Park and a visit to the Petting Zoo is lots of fun...and very inexpensive.....

I am only in Victoria for 3 days, what should I do and see? Well, that really depends on what you like to do. Here are my suggestions. There are a few world-class attractions in Victoria, I suggest you take them in. 1. Butchart Gardens (can be done in about 3 hours). 2. The Provincial Museum and Imax theatre (another half-day). 3. Whale Watching (3 hour tours) 4. A tour of Victoria (world class environmental ambiance so says Con de Naste Magazine readers). Then make sure you stroll old towne and see the shops and restaurants. Where should I eat? Again, what do you like? There is one restaurant that I have gone to more than an other. It is Milestones and it is conveniently located hanging over the Inner Harbour - consistently good with a menu to satisfy most palettes. For others check here. IF YOU ARE MORE ADVENTUROUS....CHECK HERE.
