Meares
Island
This large island is the ancestral home of the Clayoquot people, Chief Wickaninnish ruled from the village of Opitsat. Dominating the south east of the Clayoquot Sound, this island is protected from the heavy seas of the Pacific ocean by the smaller surrounding islands and the Esowista Peninsula. Meares Island has over 90 kilometres of coast line in to which many streams and inlets flow. The south west mud flats are an ideal place for bird watching. Also on the island is the words largest known living cedar, with a circumference of 18.5 metres (66 feet). Lone Cone is also another prominent landmark with hiking trails and a stunning view.
