Theatre Inconnu’s Exciting Line-Up for 2009

A SHORT HISTORY OF NIGHT

by John Mighton

As part of the activities of the International Year of Astronomy 2009!

June 4th - 20th, 2009

Winner of the 1992 Governor General’s Award for Drama, the Chalmers Award and the Dora Mavor Moore Award, A Short History of Night theatrically charts the beginnings of modern science through the dramatization of two of the Renaissance’s most colourful figures: Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe and geometrician/mystic Johannes Kepler. Set against the backdrop of witch-hunts and religious conflict, the plot focuses upon an eccentric collection of alchemists and astrologers competing to discover the hidden meaning of the cosmos.  Mighton’s genius at creating mood and 'bigger than life' characters, make A Short History of Night both a powerful and highly entertaining theatrical experience. A Short History of Night is directed by Graham McDonald (The Pillowman, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, The Caretaker).

This modern American classic presents a heightened take on marital relations that still takes the spectator by surprise. Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? is directed by Graham McDonald and features Catriona Black as Martha, Clayton Jevne as George, Michael Shewchuk as Nick, and April Mackey as Honey.

Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? runs from February 25th through March 14th, Wednesday through Saturday – with exceptions (see below) - evenings at 8 pm, with matinees on Saturday March 7th, and Saturday March 14th at 2pm.

Available for Touring!

A CHRISTMAS CAROL

by Charles Dickens (adapted by Clayton Jevne)

Theatre Inconnu, is making its hit, "A Christmas Carol" available for
touring, and we invite you to consider booking this tried-and-proven
perenial favorite. This production is suitable for a wide variety of outlets, from an intimate space, to a larger auditorium.
A 20 minute pomotional video is available upon request.

Eight Christmases ago Theatre Inconnu began what became an annual holiday tradition in Victoria. This two person, 90 minute adaptation of Dickens' beloved story has delighted thousands of audience
members of all ages.

Performed by Clayton Jevne and Sandra Ritter, this production succeeds in capturing the intimacy and poignancy of a story written to inspire universal humanity. Both actors share in assuming the various roles, while Sandra also weaves musical magic throughout the show with her Celtic harp. This is a fully acted play, and not simply a staged reading.
The actors manage to shift seamlessly from one character to another, sparking the audiences' imagination with Dickens' own words, and creating an unforgettable experience.

Critical ResponseIt just might be the best version of this show I've ever seen...
Stripped bare of special effects, Clayton Jevne makes the most of what
presumably made this story great in the first place: Dickens language.
Freed from the anticipated confines of eerie sets and drifting fog, Jevne restores a measure of dignity to Carol by including nary a lighting change nor sound cure in the entire show; instead, he wisely puts our imaginations back in the spooky seat by letting naught but the words drive the production.

While there's no doubt that Carol is a theatrical presentation - with
Jevne shifting voices and postures between some 14 different characters - what it boils down to is 90 minutes of great storytelling, with some beautiful Celtic harp accompaniment by Sandra Ritter (who also fills in on the female roles and, notably, Tiny Tim). Ritter's harp provides more than just the soundtrack, however; it also does clever double-duty as clock chimes, ghostly rapping and rattling chains... Jevne's Carol, much like Scrooge himself, left us all with a stronger feeling of warmth and fellowship than when we came in... you've got a seasonal show that you just can't beat.John Threlfall
