James-Younger Gang Re-elects Gary Chilcote National President
More than 65 people from 25 states and Canada took part in the 5th annual conference
of the National James-Younger Gang historical society on October 8 - 10 in Fayetteville,
Arkansas.
Gary Chilcote of St. Joseph Missouri was re-elected national president; Jo Ann Byland
of Carrollton, Illinois was re-elected vice-president; and Marcia Smith of Holden,
Missouri is the new secretary-treasurer.
A new board member is Betty Barr from Overland Park, Kansas. She is a great-granddaughter
of Jesse James. During the event, Betty celebrated her birthday with a special visit
to Eureka Springs, Ark., hosted by Phillip and Charlotte Steele on Oct. 11.
The conference included a visit to the farm home of
Susan Parmer and her husband, sister of the James boys
and a tour of the Prarie Grove Battlefield. The Gang also visited the Country Doctor
Museum in Lincoln, Ark., and viewed a portion of the Lee Pollock collection where Lee
gave a talk at the Shiloh Museum in Springdale, Ark.
Many relatives of the original James-Younger Gang were present including 90-year-old
Clifford Samuel of Springdale; Mary Mims of Portland, Ore.; and Jesse James of Jasper
Ala. Frank and Sharon Younger from Victoria, B.C. were also in attendance.
