Sono Nis
Press Triumphant at BC Book Prizes
Katherine
Gordon beamed as she made her way to the front of the grand dining hall at
Government House to make her acceptance speech at Saturday nightÕs BC Book
Prize Gala. Winner of the Roderick Haig Brown Regional Prize for "Made to
Measure: A History of Land Surveying in British Columbia," Gordon sported
a huge grin when she accepted her prize. ÒHaving your work recognized by your
literary peers is such an honour,Ó she said. ÒAnd this is a great BC story Ð so
itÕs wonderful to have it recognized with a BC Book Prize.Ó
Gordon is
no stranger to the annual awards ceremony. Her popular history, "The
Slocan: Portrait of a Valley" was nominated for the Hubert Evans
non-fiction prize in 2005 and also received a nomination for the Lieutenant
GovernorÕs Medal for Historical Writing.
Diane
Morriss, owner of Sono Nis Press and publisher of all three of GordonÕs books
was thrilled with the victory. Morriss takes a great deal of pride in running
the publishing company she took over after her fatherÕs death more than a
decade ago. Since then, the savvy publisher with high standards and an old-fashioned
passion for the production of beautiful books has garnered a slew of awards and
nominations.
Morriss
looked at home at Government House: she has spent quite a bit of time there
during recent months. Two weeks ago she was on hand at the historical home of
British ColumbiaÕs Lieutenant Governor in Victoria to launch another Sono Nis
title, Rosemary NeeringÕs, "Government House: The Ceremonial Home of All
British Columbians." The stunning pictorial history of the famous landmark
goes behind the scenes for a fascinating look at the past, present, and future
of British Columbia's Government House.
Other
guests at the Sono Nis table this year included Sylvia Olsen and Joan Larson,
both nominated for the Bill Duthie BooksellersÕ Choice Award for their gorgeous
picture book, "YetsaÕs Sweater." Celebrating the Cowichan sweater in
a tender and joyful intergenerational story, the book has been popular throughout
the province since its release last fall.
Authors
Nikki Tate and Penny Chamberlain were also on hand to cheer on their fellow
Sono Nis authors. ÒPublishing a book with Sono Nis is like being welcomed into
a warm and loving family,Ó said Tate. ÒIt was just thrilling when KatherineÕs
name was announced! Sono Nis may not be the largest press in Canada, but it is
one of the best.Ó
ÒKatherine
deserves this honour and recognition. She has done a wonderful job with 'Made
to Measure,'" Morriss said. "We are so excited to be recognized for our
work. We have an excellent team at Sono Nis - I'm so proud of everyone who has
worked on our titles.Ó
Now in
its 39th year, Sono Nis Press publishes a small number of high quality books
each year from modest offices in Winlaw, British Columbia.
