Question:I believe there is a way one can "guesstimate" wind speeds by observation of flags, smoke, etc. If such a means exists, would you be so kind as to tell me?
Answer: Yes, there is a way, perhaps several ways of estimating wind speed by watching trees, flags, smoke and the state of a large water surface, sea or large lake.
A table giving estimates of wind speed using sea state and tree movement is given in the article on Admiral Beaufort and his wind scale in the history section of the Weather Doctor. As part of it, there is a page: (click here to go there) where guess-timates of wind speed can be made from observations of sea states and tree motions.
