SUMMER PASSES

dividerr

Summer passes and fades
On the first October intrusions
Of Arctic winds.
With luck,
Indian summer will soon
Be upon us,
A reprise
Of summer past.

Smoke, smell
Of burning leaves and active fireplaces,
Warm days give way
To sharp nights.

Such days carry
A thrill of nervousness,
An encore of elation
Then a swift sense of sadness
And farewell.
