History
Northanger was designed and built with the intention of high latitude sailing
in the spirit of H.W. Tilman (a famous British Sailor/mountaineer), combining
sailing access with mountaineering in remote regions of the world.
Under the captaincy of her previous owner, Rick Thomas, NORTHANGER made
history and became the first British vessel to complete the notorious Northwest
Passage in Canada's north. Rick was awarded the prestigious Tilman Medal
from the Royal Cruising Club of Great Britain posthumously for this exploit.
As NORTHANGER'S new owners since 1989, we have continued on in the tradition
with a successful nine month sailing climbing expedition to Smith Island,
Antarctica in 1995-96. Again, history was made when four of NORTHANGER'S
crew became the first persons to stand on the much sought after summit of
Mount Foster on Smith Island. The event was documented for a two hour television
program.
