25 PEER PROGRAMS WANTED
Peer Resources is initiating a pilot project to determine the value of using the internet to deliver a variety of services to help create and strengthen the peer career support aspects of school-based peer services. Peer programs can qualify (see conditions below) to be selected to receive free technical support, no-cost, expert consultation, and completely free practical materials for program leaders and students.
Each Peer Leader in the National Project Will Receive:
- An easy to use manual with step-by-step instructions on how to access all services;
- A password that allows access to all pilot project services;
- A toll-free number to call for consultation on peer career program development;
- Lesson plans for training students in peer career support skills and issues;
- Reviews of relevant materials;
- Summaries of research with practical implications for peer career programs;
- Support for supervising students delivering peer career services;
- Details about peer programs from other peer leaders in Canada;
- Opportunities to act as mentors or coaches to others starting peer career programs;
- The most comprehensive set of career exploration and development resources available on the internet, continuously updated;
- Practical suggestions on how to expand a core peer helping program to include peer career services;
- Collaboration with other peer leaders across the world;
- Swift replies to concerns, questions, or ideas via e-mail;
- Access to articles and discussion groups on peer helping; and
- Continued services after project completion.
Students Will Also Receive:
- A toll-free number to call for discussions on peer career support;
- Opportunities to communicate with other peer career students across Canada;
- Access to peer career resources available through the internet;
- Opportunities to interact with career experts from home or school; and
- Information on local, provincial, and national referral sources.
To Qualify a Site Needs:
- Hardware: a computer, a modem (minimum 14.4kps), a printer (optional) and a fax machine;
- An internet service provider (commercial or educational);
- Software for connecting to the internet (such as SLIP, PPP or Winsock), sending and receiving e-mail (such as Eudora), and browsing the World-Wide Web (such as Netscape or Mosaic);
- Swift access to a local person (student or staff) who can act as technical consultant (a ÒTekkieÓ) for coping with net software or hardware difficulties;
- An already developed peer program in Canada where student peer helpers would like to assist their peers with career development; and
- Willingness to respond to questions assessing the quality of services received during the project duration: March 15 to May 30, 1996.
