Visions

DESCRIPTION: Bound but unbounded by time's deep trajectory, open to the future and yet imprisoned by the line, the "grand analogy" is at best a circular argument, at worst mere tautology. But as fixed images to tales of time incline, and from Chain of Being to Tree of Life fundamental law to unimprisoned narrative gives way, a more moving image now is glimpsed, a half-shaped vision in which life and mind are something more than shadows in a landscape dead or deadening. The second of five pages on Visions (one of the Field Nodes comprising the subject tree of The Telson Spur), this page is the first of four comprising a list of links to on-line resources for the study of the extraterrestrial life debate, the idea of a "plurality of worlds" and the concomitant issue of uniqueness. This page is devoted to resources in bioastronomy and the SETI debate in general. The other pages cover: extrasolar planets and planetary systems, their occurrence and detection; astrobiology or exobiology, the study of the nature of extraterrestrial life, its origin and evolution; and the nature of extraterrestrial intelligence, including interstellar communication and contact. A coordinate page, with common header and List of Contents, contains links to resources in environmental and future studies.

KEYWORDS: alien; bioastronomy; biocosmology; Fermi Paradox; plurality of worlds; SETI; uniqueness

Where are they?
Enrico Fermi (Fermi's Paradox, sans preamble, Summer 1950)

Why are we unaware of ETI?

John A. Ball

"I know what's really bothering you. It's not that the question is unanswered. It's the idea that you won't be around when the answer comes. You always did think you were the center of everything, Malenfant."

Far and few, far and few,
Are the lands where the Jumblies live.
Their heads are green, and their hands are blue;
And they went to sea in a sieve.

Bioastronomy and the SETI Debate

To deal with so vast a subject requires apology; neither a biologist nor anyone else can pretend to adequate knowledge over more than parts of it. But that is no reason to leave it undiscussed.
Carl Pantin

The earth-sun system as a strong source of narrow-band microwaves is one of the newer phenomena in the Galaxy. Was there ever a predecessor? That is the issue.
