The Carmi subdivision of Canadian Pacific's Kettle Valley line involved a circuitous climb from Penticton on Okanagan Lake over the Okanagan highlands and down into the Kettle Valley near the U.S. border. The summit of the line, some 3000 feet above Penticton, was in Myra Canyon situated in the hills to the south east of Kelowna.
The railway here wound along the steep sides of this rugged canyon, necessitating the construction of no fewer than eighteen bridges and two tunnels between the stations of Myra and Ruth
Four trestles are visible in this view from the bridge at mile 85.6 while a fifth trestle is out of sight behind the oncoming train. 5219 was a coal-burning 2-8-2 recently rebuilt from 2-8-0 #3687.
