Columbia River Bridge No. 3, Revelstoke
Max Jacquiard

This seemed to be an appropriate title as it was the third bridge built at this location in British Columbia, and is also the third painting I've done of this span. This bridge was completed in 1907 and replaced in 1968 by the present-day bridge whch lies slightly upstream from this location. A birdseye view was chosen to feature the surface of the river. An unusual feature of this bridge was the "gauntlet track" shown in the diagram below. Double tracked sections were partially merged or overlapped on the bridge deck which was too narrow to accommodate both tracks side by side.

While the bridge no longer exists, both locomotives have survived. Engine 5468, a P2H "Mikado" built in 1948, is now housed in Revelstoke's new Railway Museum building. Number 2860, an ex-CPR "Royal Hudson" built in 1940, is scheduled to haul a tourist train "The Royal Hudson" from North Vancouver to Squamish at the top of Howe Sound during the four summer months every year, but is currently undergoing extensive maintenance.
