I quote from the book: "Hughes began the 1980s with one of his most harmonious works, Beside the Koksilah River. He had painted the Koksilah River as early as 1967 and again in 1974, but this canvas is the one that succeeds most completely.
The eye wanders through the composition progressing from the foreground wild flowers to the slowly moving river and the opposite shore.
As the result of the intense observation and concentration that characterize all of his best work, Beside the Koksilah River has a rightness and completeness to it. Hughes made a painting that is immediately satisfying and that upon repeated viewing, rewards us with new discoveries, such as the wonderfully awkward shapes of the cattle, the floating leaves on the river, the tiny building in the distance (a sawmill), the silhouetted tree atop the highest point of Mount Tzouhalem.
All these may not be seen on first viewing, but all contribute to the complete world that Hughes created."
