30. A low-cut neckline on a
woman's dress. This was definitely not on display when for the 130th anniversary of Centennial United Church, where Alanna has been the minister these past eight years, Alanna dressed up (circa late 1800's)
in a blouse with mutton-chop
sleeves, a sensible long skirt,
hat and gloves. No girdle though.
There's authentic and then there's
crazy. Speaking of Centennial, the
"urban garden" at the
church that Alanna initiated is
still a work in progress. They
were able to harvest about five
pounds of scarlet runner beans and
give them to Rock Bay Landing, a
homeless shelter near the church.

51. Asylum seeker. This November Art
joined with a number of people in
the area to form a group to
sponsor a Syrian refugee family.
Art suggested they call themselves
"Saanich Peninsula Refugee
Initiative Group", the
acronym for which is SPRIG, which
Art thought was pretty catchy,
suggesting as it does new growth
on a tree. The group elected a
steering committee to coordinate
its efforts and Art volunteered to
be the treasurer. Ever since he
has been spending many hours
helping to get things going, such
as setting up a SPRIG email
address, web site, bank account,
and all the many details that go
into an enterprise of this sort.
SPRIG has applied to become a
|
"constituent group" of
the Inter-Cultural Association of
Greater Victoria (ICA), which is a
Sponsorship Agreement Holder (SAH)
with Citizenship and Immigration
Canada. Groups like ours have to
be approved by a SAH before we can
sponsor refugees. We have to raise
30% of the estimated total cost of
sponsoring a family of four before
ICA will accept us. That's about $15,000 but I am confident we will raise it and go on to raise the remaining $30,000. Canadians are generous when they are convinced that the cause is good and it touches their hearts. We are impressed at the number of private sponsorship groups that have formed across the country. Although it is a lot of work, it is good work, and Art does not mind putting in the hours. We expect the family we sponsor to arrive sometime in the second half of 2016. Once they are here, we will need to offer them ongoing support to adapt to their new life in a new country. Imagine how hard it would be if you had to move to a Middle East country to live. Learning a new language is only part of it. There are new customs, news way of relating to government institutions, a whole new bureaucracy to deal with. When you look at it this way, raising money is the easier part. Being there for the family for the long run, getting them housing, clothing for our climate, transportation, government services, and so on -- not to mention simple friendship -- is the greater commitment. Our SPRIG website is up and running. Please do visit us at www.sprig.me .

64. This is also a word that describes
the time we spent in the Toronto
area this August visiting Alanna's sisters and their husbands/partners: Brigid and Ted, and Colleen and John. Art and Ted are great Blue Jays fans and so Art and Alanna and Ted and Brigid took in a couple games at the Rogers Centre. It was awfully exciting as the Jays swung some big trades and made it to the playoffs for the first time since 1993. Now if you want to get Art started on a rant, ask him how he feels about what he calls the "constructive dismissal" of Alex Anthopoulos, the Jays (now former) general manager, whose shrewd acquisition of players made the Jays run to the play-offs possible. Art swears that if he had been a Rogers customer, he would have switched to another telecom. Alanna also took this visit as an opportunity to get the hair she has kept long these many years cut by Brigid’s hairdresser who “knows how to cut McQuaid hair”. She sent the hair (9 inches) to the Cancer Society to make wigs. Since then she has received many compliments on her new shorter hair style (nearly all from other women who notice things like that). Earlier, in July, we made our annual trip to Seattle for the three-game series the Jays play with the Seattle Mariners every year. If you don’t mind the line-ups to get through customs, it’s fun to make the sea trip between Victoria and Seattle, standing on the passenger deck as the Clipper wends its way through the small islands that dot the passage. And while we are not fans of big cities, Seattle is the best we’ve come across.

73. This is what you would call Alanna
and Tevne, 8-year-old son of
Art's nephew, Chris and his wife, Tara. When Alanna and Tev aren't
playing monopoly or some other
game that Tevne always seems to
win (he makes up the rules, of
course), they go on adventures.
Not surprising as Art regards life
with Alanna as an adventure in
itself. One adventure that stands
out is an occasion when Alanna was
babysitting Tevne. The other kids
in his class had been on the
double-decker transit buses but he
hadn't, so on Remembrance Day they went to downtown Victoria via double-decker bus. The plan was, once they got there, to take an open-top double-decker tour bus. After waiting in vain for the tour bus outside the Empress Hotel for a half-hour in the cold, they headed inside the hotel to have high tea because neither of them had had lunch. How fortuitous to be given a reason to treat oneself to the superlative indulgence of high tea at the Empress! Another example of Alanna's
personal motto (as bestowed on her
by Art), "Through disaster to
success".
