30. Dodge mini__ . We purchased this
vehicle at the end of 2012 when
the 1987 Toyota pickup truck that
Alanna was driving looked like it
was going to cost money to keep
running. The vehicle we bought is
very practical. There are two
bucket seats in the front, another
two bucket seats in the middle,
and a bench seat in the back that
can seat three. The middle and
back seats can be stowed into the
floor of the vehicle, which turns
it into the equivalent of a panel
truck. We have had occasion to use
it to haul tables and other large
things, and its passenger capacity
comes in handy for taking members
of
Alanna's congregation at Centennial United Church to church events (visit http://cucvictoria.com/minister.html to see a nice picure of Alanna and Art taken at her ordination in 2008) . It is Alanna's
everyday vehicle. It's enough like a pickup truck to keep her happy (she can look down on mere sedans), although she would have preferred a manual transmission instead of the automatic it came with.

34. The kind of hamburger that comes

37. Nickname for
Art's favourite baseball team. In late February - early March we travelled to Florida for the purpose of attending some of this team's
exhibition baseball games (the
Grapefruit League, as these games
with other major league teams
during spring training are
called). The
team's home stadium for spring training is in Dunedin. We stayed in a hotel in Clearwater, which is next door to Dunedin. We were joined for much of our time there by Brigid McQuaid, Alanna's
youngest sister, and her partner,
Ted Weber, who live in Toronto. We
enjoyed being with them and had
good times together. When we are
with Brigid and Ted there is
always lots of laughter. Attending
a spring training game is
different from attending a regular
season game. The stadiums are
smaller (maximum attendance at
Dunedin is 5,000) and you are a
lot closer to the players. There
were lots of Canadians at the home
games and more often than not we
were seated next to Canadians from
various parts of the country. One
thing Art noted in Florida that he
wished concession stands in Canada
would adopt is that you could
order a side of baked beans to go
with your hamburger or hot dog. In
August we made our usual trek to
Seattle to watch our team play the
Seattle Mariners (winning two out
of three!). While there we visited
the Boeing plant where jet
airliners are assembled. It is the
largest building by volume in the
world. Well worth visiting.

4. Nickname of
Art's youngest grandnephew. Being childless (not by choice but by the way the fertility cards were dealt), we thank Art's
nephew, Chris, and his wife, Tara,
for allowing us to play the role
of "honorary
grandparents" to their son.
We have had this little fellow
stay with us on a few occasions
when Chris and Tara had to be out
of town, and it has been fun for
him and for us. He and Alanna have
a ball playing together, whether
sword fighting with plastic swords
(which can serve as javelins when
thrown across a living room), or
throwing a frisbee in the yard.
Art has taken an interest in his
baseball development, buying him a
baseball glove for T-Ball in the
spring, and playing catch in the
off-season. The boy bats and
throws left-handed, which leads
Art to think that he will have a
good future in baseball if he
decides to continue with it. Kudos
to Chris and Tara for raising the
happiest, most good-natured and
well-behaved just-turned-six years
old boy we have ever encountered.
Hint: same first three letters as
the main character’s name in

44. Art's oldest sister. We stayed at her and Elgin's
home in Kelowna when we visited
them and
Art's sisters Irene and Pat and brother Johnny in October. They all made us welcome and each contributed to some of the extra pounds we brought back home. Good cooks run in the family. We were saddened by the death of Art's
older brother, Ed, in July. Ed was
the fifth child of John and
Cyrilla Menu. Art, the sixth and
last child, was born eight years
after Ed. Ed had been battling
cancer for three years prior to
his death. The initial diagnosis
gave him only six months to live.
We are grateful that he was with
us for as long as he was. His
wife, Carolyn, has herself lived
with multiple sclerosis for many
years, and Ed was her main
caregiver. With his death Carolyn
has had to go into care and now
resides at James Bay Care Centre
in Victoria. Art and Alanna visit
her regularly to support her as
she grieves the loss of her
husband and home. Fortunately her
sons Michael and Chris and their
families live in the area and are
doing a good job of managing her
affairs.
Ed's death followed the death of Art's
uncle, Omer, in May of 2013. Omer
and his late wife, Margaret, were
most kind and hospitable to Art's family and he remembers them with great fondness.
