1. __ Angeles. We took the ferry from Victoria to here when we took a one-week vacation driving the Oregon coast in June. One place we went to is the Sea Lion Cave. You take an elevator down 200 ft. through solid rock to where the ocean has carved a cave. This is the only known sea lion breeding site that is not on an island. It's amazing to watch a one-ton male hoist itself out of the beating surf and climb to the top of a rock pile using only its front flippers to pull itself up. In the town of Tillamook we toured the huge Cheese Factory, gobbled samples and learned a lot about cheese making. Tillamook is also home to the Tillamook Air Museum, built in WW2 as a hanger for up to eight blimps. It is the world's largest wooden structure and has been turned into a museum with aircraft from WWI to the present. (4)

19. Sick. Arthur had to take six weeks of sick leave after having surgery in February to repair his right collar bone. He broke it in August of last year. Normally collar bones heal on there own, but his didn't. So now he walks around with a stainless steel plate and several screws in his shoulder, which will remain unless they cause discomfort. The bone is now healed but the shoulder can start to ache after a few hours working on the computer. (3)

28. Up, in baseball. This clue was amply illustrated when we spent a week in Seattle at the end of July and attended three Blue Jays games, all of which they lost. We weren't the only Canadians there. The ballpark (Safeco Field, a superb baseball park, that puts Toronto's Rogers Centre to shame) rocked to thunderous "Let's go, Blue Jays!" cheers. The Seattle players must have been thoroughly irked. Also attending some of the games were Art's brother, Ed, and three of Ed's sons. So there was also some family visiting. During the week we visited the Museum of Flight, which we cannot recommend highly enough for anyone who has any interest in the history of flight and space exploration. One needs a whole day or a couple days to absorb everything. There were many videos playing on monitors throughout the museum with film and pictures and commentary to give background to the airplanes on display. We also took the monorail (remember the 1962 Seattle World Fair?) to the Museum of Music and Science Fiction, which had a special program on the history of horror movies. We don't go to horror movies, but it was fascinating to watch the video interviews with directors of horror films explaining the way they work. Art discovered he didn't mind watching snippets from famous horror movies, as long as there was commentary to go with them. The museum has a permanent display about Seattle home-boy Jimi Hendrix that is also quite interesting, even if you don't care for his music. (2,3)

63. Weirdness. The quality here is one that is often found in science fiction, as we saw when we took a one-week course together at the Vancouver School of Theology in July, the topic of which was Other Worlds: The Problem of Evil in Third-World Science Fiction and the Bible. There were three professors teaching during the week. For two days we had a Spaniard (who still had his accent) who taught literature at the Okanagan campus of UBC. Then we had a Muslim -- also a professor of literature from the Okanagan campus of UBC. Finally we had a Jewish rabbi who teaches at Vancouver School of Theology. Sounds like a joke, eh? ("A Catholic, a Muslim and a Jew walk into a classroom....") It turned out to be fun, especially since we were auditing the course and didn't have to do the written assignments. At the same time as we were attending that summer school the Native Ministries Consortium was offering their summer school. So there were First Nations people from Canada and the US (one guy even came from Hawaii). They offered our summer school the option of buying into their meal plan so we got to have breakfast and lunch with them. It's a pity that most white folks don't have a chance to socialize with First Nations people. It would erase a lot of prejudice. (8)
