My name is Ron Lukawitski . I play a Heartfield custom 6 string bass through a Peavey Mega Bass Head + Hartke 4x10 Cab and a Gallien-Krueger MBE for smaller gigs.
I live in Victoria on Vancouver Island,British Columbia,Canada. I have been playing the electric bass for 35 years and have been a bass instructor for 20 years. I am currently working on Cruise Ships. In Victoria I played in The Chris Millington Big Band ,The Don Lepard Big Band, The Randy Tucker Band (a 4 piece Blues and R&B band), Bossa Breeze (latin music), A Walk In The Park (duo, trio or quartet, playing jazz), The Walter Bodega Band (Celtic Music), The Big Blue Bridge Band (Originals), Mahri Sherlock (Childrens music) plus casuals and subbing. My musical past is quite varied and includes 'the bar-band scene'... this includes clubs accross Canada, six years in a Victoria based 40s, 50s & 60s musical review group (Doc and The DooWops) and in 1967 a band (Troyka) with guitarist Rob Edwards moved from Edmonton,Alberta to New York and landed a recording contract with Atlantic Records. We were one of three bands chosen for their new Cotillion label. We enjoyed being the opening act for the Byrds, Canned Heat, Rare Earth, Savoy Brown and Mountain.
This is a 12 bar progression in G.There is a choice of three bass lines that can be played on the G7,C7 & D7 chords.(Blues in G) There is also a choice of three 'passing' or 'joining' bass lines that can be used to connect G--->C,C--->G & D--->G.

WALKING THROUGH THE CYCLE OF 4THS
This lesson can be completed by learning ' TWO' left hand (LH) patterns. You will be playing a chordal bass line (root, 3rd, 5th). One pattern starts on the 4th string and the other pattern starts on the 3rd string. By starting on the 12th fret of your 'E' string, play the 'root, 3rd, 5th, 3rd . Then go up a fourth to the 3rd string and play the 'root, 3rd, 5th & 3rd. Now go down a '5th' to the '10th' fret of the 4th string and continue repeating the TWO patterns. When you get to the 3rd' string '2nd' fret you will encounter a bit of a snag. Which of the TWO bass lines will you be able to play here? I'll let you figure that one out!
Once you have mastered the above exercise you can start creating your own variations by walking through the cycle taking a different route each time.
Here is one example of how it can be done First off lets call the pattern with the root on the 4th string "#1" The pattern with the root on the 3rd string will be "#2"
From the '4th' string '12th' fret (E) --->go up a 'fourth' pattern '#1' to the '3rd' string, '12th' fret (A) --->go up a 'fourth', pattern '#1' to the '2nd' string, '12th' fret (D)--->go up a 'fourth' , pattern '#1' to the '1st' string, '12' fret (G)--->go down a 'fifth', pattern '#2' to the '3rd' string, '10th' fret (C)---> go down a 'fith', pattern '#2' to the '3rd' string, '8th' fret (F)--->go down a 'fifth', pattern '#2' to the '4th' string, '6th' fret (Bb)---> go up a 'fourth' , pattern '#1' to the '3rd' string, '6th' fret (Eb)--->go up a 'fourth', pattern '#1' to the '2nd' string, '6th' fret (Ab)--->go up a 'fourth', pattern '#1' to the '1st' string, '6th' fret (Db)--->go down a 'fifth', pattern '#2' to the '2nd' string, '4th' fret (Gb)---> go down a 'fifth', pattern '#2' to the '3rd' string, '2nd' fret (B)--->Go down a 'fith', play the '4th' string open (E).
You have just completed the cycle of 4ths by taking a different route.

In order to listen to this you will need an mp3 player. The file is very small and intended to be played in "loop mode". The first bar is just a drum track for you to practice over and the next two bars include the complete bass line. Lessons 1 through 5 follow the same format except that the bass line is simplified in lesson 1 and gets more complicated each time. This method has worked for me in helping bass players learn how to "slap".
