Personal computer history:

  • 1986 - Motorola announces the Motorola 68030 microprocessor. It incorporates about 300,000 transistors.
  • 1993 - Eight games by Sierra On-Line for the Macintosh cause the system to lock-up, due to a time-related algorithm bug.
  • 1995 - Netscape Communications releases Navigator 2.0 beta, with support for Java applets.
  • 2001 - Sony announces the Clie PEG N760C handheld computer. It features built-in digital audio player, Palm OS v4.1, 65,536-color display. Price is US$500; the unit is to be available in October, replacing the Clie PEG N710C.
  • 2005 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. An 8-year-old girl has a personal computer in her bedroom.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1925 - The Apollo Theater in Los Angeles premieres the Alice Comedy film Alice Plays Cupid.
  • 1928 - Walt Disney's "Mickey Mouse" trademark application is granted.
  • 1932 - A Sunday Mickey Mouse newspaper comic includes the first appearance of Morty and Ferdy, two children of Mrs. Fieldmouse, a neighbor of Mickey Mouse.
  • 1957 - The ABC TV network airs the Disneyland TV show, entitled Four Fabulous Characters, including the films Johnny Appleseed, Martins and the Coys, Casey Jones, and Casey at the Bat.
  • 1966 - The NBC TV network airs the Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color show, featuring Emil and the Detectives, part two.
  • 1986 - The TV series Siskel & Ebert debuts in syndication.
  • 1986 - The film Captain Eo opens in Tomorrowland at Disneyland.
  • 1987 - A US Federal Judge rules that the Disney/Hasbro "Wuzzle" characters do not infringe the copyright of Engrav-It's "What" characters.
  • 1987 - A two-hour syndicated TV special DuckTales airs. This is the debut of the first daily animated series from the Walt Disney Studios.
  • 1989 - The TV series Chip 'n' Dale's Rescue Rangers is syndicated for release on TV.
  • 1991 - Disney first shows the Touchstone Pictures live-action feature film Paradise in select theatres in New York.
  • 1992 - The CBS TV network begins airing the Disney show The Golden Palace, a sequel to The Golden Girls.
  • 1992 - Disney releases the Touchstone Pictures live-action feature film Captain Ron to theatres.
  • 1992 - Buena Vista releases the Hollywood Pictures / Miramax Films live-action feature film Sarafina! to selected theatres.
  • 1993 - The CBS TV network debuts the animated TV series Marsupilami.
  • 1995 - The CBS TV network debuts the Touchstone Television TV series If Not for You.
  • 1998 - Entertainment releases the Hollywood Pictures live-action feature film Deep Rising to theaters in Great Britain.
  • 2006 - The September 18 issue of Business Week features ten hot-air balloons in the sky on its cover, each with a company name. The largest balloon has the name "Disney". The cover refers to the article "Best Places to Launch a Career".
  • 2012 - Disney releases the film Beverly Hills Chihuahua 3: Viva la Fiesta! direct to the home video market in the USA.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1964 - The CBS television network airs the last episode of the Route 66 show.
  • 1969 - The Tour de France begins, in Nice, France, comprising nine road courses and eleven hill climbs, over nine days. Henry Greder and André Vigneron race the ex-Scunderia Filipinetti #143 1968 Corvette L-88 T-Top.
  • 1983 - At the Sears Point International Raceway in Sonoma, California, the SCCA Budweiser Trans-Am Championship - Round 10 race is held.
    • Finishing 15th is the Pickett Racing #6 Corvette, driven by Darin Brassfield.
    • Finishing 19th is the Rick Stark #17 Corvette, driven by Rick Stark.
    • Finishing 20th is the New Century Beverage/Windmill Farms #86 Corvette, driven by Ron Blair.
    • Finishing 23rd is the Cavallino Rampante #22 Corvette, driven by Mike Meek.
    • In 30th place, but not finishing the race, is the T+S Racing #35 Corvette, driven by Ken Yeo.
    • In 31st place, but not finishing the race, is the On Track Engineering #0 Corvette, driven by Frank Search.

  • 1993 - In Dallas, Texas, the Dallas Grand Prix race is held, round 8 of the SCCA World Challenge series. Finishing 1st is the Dieline Corvette driven by R.K. Smith.
  • 1998 - In Ely, Nevada, the 10th Annual Silver-State Classic Challenge is held, over three days. 90 miles of public Highway 318 is closed part of one day to allow unlimited-speed racing. 37 of 158 entrants are Corvettes. Corvette drivers finish first in the 125 MPH class and 140 MPH class. In the Unlimited class, Kelly Sievers in a special 1985 Corvette crashs at about 220 MPH.
  • 1999 - At the Road Atlanta raceway in Braselton, Georgia, the Second Annual Petit Le Mans race is held, round 6 of the American Le Mans Series.
    • Finishing 4th in GTS class and 13th overall is the #4 Corvette C5-R, driven by Andy Pilgrim, Scott Sharp, and Kelly Collins.
    • Finishing 5th in GTS class and 14th overall is the #3 Corvette C5-R, driven by Ron Fellows, Chris Kneifel, and John Paul, Jr.

  • 1999 - In Effingham, Illinois, Mid America Designs hosts Funfest '99 to celebrate their 25th year in business. 5,100 Corvettes and 30,000 enthusiasts attend. A 1978 Silver Anniversary Indy 500 Pace Car Replica with 1700 miles is given away.
  • 2004 - In Effingham, Illinois, the Corvette Funfest is held at Mid-America Motorworks, over three days. About 45,000 people attend, with 10,700 Corvettes.

World War II history:

  • 1931 - The Japanese Army begins a full-scale invasion of Manchuria (northeast China).
  • 1939 - Russian forces reach Vilna and Brest-Litovsk in Poland, and meet with German forces. A joint German-Soviet military commission meets to draft plans for partition.
  • 1939 - The German embassy in Washington, D.C. claims mines containing mustard gas exploded at a barricade at the Jasiolka Bridge in Jaslo, Poland, on September 8.
  • 1939 - Quote of American Major General George White, commander of National Guard 41st Division: "The whole military force of the United States is obsolescent...".
  • 1939 - Soviets report continuing advance along a 500-mile front, capturing thirteen additional towns and villages, including Stanislawow in Ukraine.
  • 1939 - German forces capture Drohobycz in southern Poland, center of rich oil fields.
  • 1939 - (evening) The Soviet Government announces its intention to cooperate with Germany in establishing a buffer state to be called Poland.
  • 1940 - Soviet Minister of Defence Marshal S.K. Timoshenko and Chief of General Staff K.A. Meretskov submit a war plan to Josef Stalin and Prime Minister Vyacheslav Molotov, proposing an attack on Germany north of the Pripet marshes, with a strong defence to the south, or vice-versa.
  • 1941 - German Field Marshal Erich von Manstein is appointed Commander Army group II (Russia).
  • 1942 - In the Caribbean Sea, off British Guyana, German submarine U-175 torpedoes and sinks Canadian merchant ship Norfolk.
  • 1944 - Adolf Hitler issues orders for fortifications to be built in Slovakia.

Video game history:

  • 2006 - Nintendo releases the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team video game for the Nintendo DS in the US.
  • 2006 - Nintendo releases the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team video game for the Game Boy Advance in the US.
  • 2012 - 2K Games releases the Borderlands 2 video game for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Swedish history:

  • 1939 - (to September 19) Premiers and Foreign Ministers of Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden meet in Copenhagen.
  • 1961 - A DC-6 airplane carrying United Nations Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld crashes in Northern Rhodesia.
  • 1994 - National elections are held. 87.1% of the eligible population votes. The Social Democratic party receives 45.25%, with Ingvar Carlsson elected Prime Minister. The Moderate conservative party receives 22.37%. Other parties receive under 8% each.
  • 2001 - The United Nations issues a postage stamp in memory of Swede Dag Hammarskjöld UN Secretary General.

A&W Root Beer history:

  • 1974 - A & W (USA) begins using "GREAT ROOTBEAR" as a trade-mark.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1981 - The Charlton Press releases the 33rd edition of The Charlton Standard Catalogue of Canadian Coins.

USA coin history:

  • 1793 - The Philadelphia Mint delivers the first batch of 1793 Liberty Cap cents (11,056 of them), and first 3400 half cents with Liberty Cap design.
  • 1866 - The Grand Masonic Lodge of Nevada lays the cornerstone for the Carson City Mint.

Sports history:

  • 1903 - Philadelphia Phillies' Chick Fraser no-hits Chicago Cubs, 10-0.
  • 1908 - Cleveland Naps' pitcher Bob "Dusty" Rhoades no-hits Boston Red Sox, 2-1.
  • 1915 - Boston Braves trounce Saint Louis Cardinals 20-1.
  • 1930 - Enterprise (US) beats Shamrock V (England) in 15th America's Cup.
  • 1930 - New York Yankees' pitcher Red Ruffing hits two home runs to beat Saint Louis Browns, 7-6.
  • 1934 - Saint Louis Browns' player Bobo Newsom loses no-hitter to Boston Braves in 10 innings, 2-1.
  • 1938 - Despite losing a double header, New York Yankees clinch pennant number 10.
  • 1949 - Baseball major league record four grand slams hit.
  • 1954 - Cleveland Indians clinch American League pennant, beat Detroit Tigers (3-2).
  • 1963 - Final game at Polo Grounds, 1,752 see Philadelphia Phillies beat New York Mets 5-1.
  • 1967 - Intrepid (US) beats Dame Pattie (Australia) in 21st America's Cup.
  • 1968 - Ray Washburn (Saint Louis Cardinals) no-hits San Francisco Giants 2-0.
  • 1977 - Courageous (US) sweeps Australia (Australia) in 24th America's Cup.
  • 1983 - New Orleans Saints' first overtime victory; beating Chicago Bears 34-31.
  • 1984 - Detroit Tigers become fourth team to stay in first place from opening day.
  • 1987 - Detroit Tigers' Darrell Evans is first 40-year-old to hit 30 home runs.
  • 1990 - In Tokyo, Japan, the International Olympic Committee chooses Atlanta, Georgia, to host the 1996 Summer Olympic Games.
  • 2022 - At Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin, USA, National Football League regular season game: Green Bay Packers beats Chicago Bears by score 27-10.
  • 2022 - At Allegiant Stadium in Paradise, Nevada, USA, National Football League regular season game: Arizona Cardinals beats Las Vegas Raiders by score 29-23.
  • 2022 - At Empower Field at Mile High in Denver, Colorado, USA, National Football League regular season game: Denver Broncos beats Houston Texans by score 16-9.
  • 2022 - At AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, USA, National Football League regular season game: Dallas Cowboys beats Cincinnati Bengals by score 20-17.
  • 2022 - At Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California, USA, National Football League regular season game: San Francisco 49ers beats Seattle Seahawks by score 27-7.

  • 1919 - Hurricane tides 16 feet above normal drown 280 along Gulf Coast.
  • 1926 - Hurricane hits Miami and south Florida, USA, destroying hotels, piers, marinas, mansions built in preceding years. 400 killed, 50,000 made homeless.
  • 1974 - Hurricane Fifi strikes Honduras with 110 mph winds, 5,000 die.
  • 1989 - Hurricane Hugo causes extensive damage in Puerto Rico.
  • 2003 - Hurricane Isabel makes landfall as a Category 2 Hurricane on North Carolina's Outer Banks. It will directly kill 16 people in the Mid-Atlantic area.

USA history:

  • 1793 - US President George Washington lays the cornerstone of the US Capitol building.
  • 1830 - A horse beats the first US-made locomotive in a race near Baltimore, Maryland.
  • 1851 - New York Times newspaper starts publishing, selling for 2 cents a copy.
  • 1866 - The Grand Masonic Lodge of Nevada lays the cornerstone for the Carson City Mint.
  • 1870 - Old Faithful Geyser is observed and named by Henry D. Washburn.
  • 1890 - US President Benjamin Harrison signs a bill into law making use of the Post Office for lottery purposes illegal.
  • 1895 - Booker T Washington delivers "Atlanta Compromise" address.
  • 1895 - D.D. Palmer of Davenport, Iowa, becomes first chiropractor.
  • 1913 - US House of Representatives passes the Glass-Owen bill (Federal Reserve Act).

  • 2007 - The Federal Reserve cuts interest rates in the U.S. by half a point (0.5 percent) for the first time since 2006 to ease the ongoing panic in the financial markets due to the subprime mortgage crisis.

  • 1914 - Battle of Aisne ends with Germans beating French during WW I.
