Personal computer history:

  • 1995 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. A stock sound "ta da" from Windows 3 is played when a DNA machine finds a match.
  • 1996 - Motorola announces its entry into the Power Macintosh clone market, by unveiling the StarMax series, featuring the PowerPC 603e and 604e processors, operating at 166 MHz and 200 MHz.
  • 1997 - IBM licenses the PalmPilot design from 3Com.
  • 1999 - Compaq Computer unveils the Aero 1530 handheld computer. It features Windows CE, 16MB RAM, 14-hour battery life, MP3 audio player, PC Card Type I slot. Weight is five ounces; price is US$299.
  • 2001 - Handspring introduces the Handspring Visor Neo handheld computer. It features monochrom display, 33 MHz processor, 8 MB RAM, palm OS 3.5.2H3. Two AAA batteries power the unit for 6-8 weeks. Price is US$199. The Handspring Visor Pro comes with 16 MB RAM, for US$299.
  • 2002 - General Magic company announces it is ceasing operations.
  • 2003 - Handspring debuts the Treo 600 handheld computer in Europe. It features cell phone, built-in camera, 144 MHz Texas Instruments processor, 160x160 pixel display, Secure Digital slot, Palm OS 5.2, tiny keyboard.
  • 2007 - The European Court of First Instance rules that Microsoft must obey a 2004 order to share networking protocols and offer a version of Windows without a built-in copy of audio/video Windows Media Player, and pay a US$613 million fine.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1925 - Disney completes the 23rd Alice Comedy film, Alice in Love (Alice Plays Cupid).
  • 1927 - Disney ships the Oswald the Lucky Rabbit film Rickety Gin to Winkler Productions.
  • 1927 - Disney completes the 11th Oswald the Lucky Rabbit film, Neck 'n' Neck.
  • 1932 - The Mickey Mouse film The Whoopee Party is released to theaters. Goofy and Minnie Mouse also appear.
  • 1954 - Disney releases the animated short film Once Upon a Wintertime to theaters. It was previously released as part of the film Melody Time.
  • 1961 - The ABC TV network airs the last Walt Disney Presents show.
  • 1967 - The NBC TV network airs the Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color show, entitled The Not So Lonely Lighthouse Keeper.
  • 1970 - In the case of the Sierra Club against the U.S. Forest Service over Disney's proposed Mineral King ski resort, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals overrules Judge Sweigert, dissolving the injunction against commencing the project.
  • 1984 - Five unions representing 1844 Disneyland workers vote on the company's offer of a three-year wage freeze. The vote is 97 percent rejecting the offer, and authorizing a strike if needed.
  • 1991 - The ABC TV network debuts the Disney-produced TV show Home Improvement.
  • 1992 - Disney releases the film The Rescuers on videocassette, and on laserdisc for US$30-40.
  • 1993 - The TV series Countdown at the Neon Armadillo first airs.
  • 1993 - Disney releases the film Beauty and the Beast on laserdisc in Japan, for 4871-12360 Yen.
  • 1994 - The Aladdin TV series makes its CBS debut.
  • 1998 - The live musical play Elaborate Lives: The Legend of Aida premieres in Atlanta, Georgia.
  • 1999 - Disney makes a limited release of the Hollywood Pictures live-action feature film Breakfast of Champions to theaters in New York City and Los Angeles in the USA, and Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
  • 2002 - Buena Vista Home Entertainment releases the film Monsters, Inc. on videocassette, and DVD for US$29.99 in the US.
  • 2004 - Touchstone releases the live-action feature film Mr. 3000 to theaters in the USA.
  • 2005 - The ABC TV network airs the ABC Kids TV show, including The Buzz on Maggie.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1956 - The XP-64 seating buck is shown to management.
  • 2000 - At the Virginia International Raceway, the Motorola Cup Virginia Fall Classic race is held, round ten of the Grand-Am Motorola Cup series.
    • Finishing 1st in SGS class and 1st overall is the Powell Motorsport #11 Corvette, driven by Devon Powell and Doug Goad.
    • Finishing ?th in SGS class and 17th overall is the First Racing #22 Corvette, driven by Michael Culver and Mike Fitzgerald.
    • Finishing ?th in SGS class and 48th overall is the Phoenix American Motorsports #37 Corvette, driven by Stu Hayner.

  • 2000 - At the Virginia International Raceway, the Motorola Cup North American Street Stock Championship Series Awards Banquet is held.
    • Powell Motorsports places 3rd for Team championship award in SGS class.
    • Michael Culver and Mike Fitzgerald tie for 3rd in Driver championship award in SGS class.
    • John Heinricy wins the Hoosier Award, for most pole positions.

  • 2016 - At the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, USA, the Lone Star Le Mans race is held, round 11 of the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship series.
    • Finishing 3rd in GT Le Mans class and 13th overall is the Corvette Racing #3 Corvette C7.R driven by Jan Magnussen and Antonio Garcia.
    • Finishing 5th in GT Le Mans class and 15th overall is the Corvette Racing #4 Corvette C7.R driven by Tommy Milner and Oliver Gavin.

World War II history:

  • 1938 - British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain meets with the Cabinet. He states that Adolf Hitler appears to be "a man who could be relied upon when he had given his word".
  • 1939 - (0400 hours) Russian armies cross the entire eastern frontier of Poland, claiming the Polish State no longer exists, and "to protect our own interests and to protect the White Russian and Ukranian minorities".
  • 1939 - In Berlin, Germany, an explosion occurs in the Air Ministry headquarters.
  • 1939 - Polish President Ignaz Moscicki and a government party of 57 cross into Rumania.
  • 1939 - The Germany Army captures the citadel of Brest-Litovsk, Poland, taking 600 prisoners.
  • 1939 - German forces capture the Polish town of Kutno.
  • 1939 - The Polish army is largely defeated; German forces reach Vistula and encircle Warsaw.
  • 1939 - (about 2000 hours) German submarine U-29 torpedoes and sinks the British aircraft carrier HMS Courageous in the Bristol Channel, with the loss of 518 men.
  • 1940 - Adolf Hitler gives orders to postpone indefinitely invasion plans of Great Britain. The invasion fleet and troops are ordered dispersed from the area.
  • 1941 - Atlantic convoy SC-42 from Canada reaches Loch Ewe, Scotland. Of the initial 67 ships, 15 were sunk, one severely damaged. Over 203 sailors were killed. The loss of 70,000 tons includes 21,000 tons of iron ore and steel.
  • 1943 - (to September 19) US carriers Lexington, Princeton, and Belleau Wood launch air strikes on Tarawa and Makin in the Gilbert Islands.
  • 1944 - (0825 hours) In France, Operation Wellhit begins. British Bomber Command sends 600 Lancaster and Halifax bombers, dropping 3000 tons of bombs on the slopes of Mont Lambert as the Canadian 1st Army begins a ground assault on Boulogne.
  • 1944 - The blackout in London, England, is replaced by a dim-out.
  • 1944 - British Bomber Command attacks Eikenhorst, a suburb of Wassenaar, Netherlands, suspected as a site of V-2 rocket storage.
  • 1944 - (to September 20) German and Allied forces battle in San Marino.
  • 1944 - 762 British bombers attack Boulogne, France.
  • 1944 - British Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery launches Operation Market Garden, with 14 divisions. Nearly 2000 American CG-4A and 700 British Horga and Hamilcar gliders are launched from southern England, carrying the British 2nd Army and the US 101st Airborne Division. They land along 60 miles of road in Holland, leading into Germany. The objective is to capture bridges at Grave, Nijmegen, and Arnhem over the Rhine river.
  • 1945 - In Norway, a court sentences Vidkun Quisling to death.

Video game history:

  • 1995 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. A character says he got arthritis in his fingers from playing Space Invaders in 1977.
  • 1999 - In Japan, the Tokyo Game Show is held, over three days.

Swedish history:

  • 936 - Bishop Unni is killed in Birka.
  • 1632 - King Gustav Adolf and 26,000 men leave Halle, to advance on Franconia before winter.
  • 1633 - Imperial army leader Wallenstein launches a massive attack on Count Thurn's Swedish force at Ateinau, forcing 8000 men to surrender within a week.
  • 1635 - The Swedish Council decides that Chancellor Axel Oxenstierna (in Germany) should either obtain territory for peace, or money for peace, or get out of Germany with safety and reputation intact.
  • 1809 - Sweden is forced to make peace with Russia, ceding all of Finland, the Åland islands, and a north-eastern strip of Sweden. In total, Sweden loses one-third of its territory.
  • 1948 - In Jerusalem, Palestine, Count Folke Bernadotte, the King's nephew, is murdered by Jewish extremists while mediating peace between Palestinians and Jews.
  • 1988 - (to October 2) The 24th Olympic Games are held in Seoul, Korea. Sweden wins 4 silver and 7 bronze medals.
  • 1992 - The Swedish Nuclear Inspectorate orders five nuclear power plants shut down for modifications.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1989 - RCMP officers seize three 1967 $1 "diving goose" double struck coins from J&M Numismatic Auction, based on information from the Royal Canadian Mint that they coins were deliberately and illegally created at the Mint.

USA coin history:

  • 1795 - The Philadelphia Mint delivers the first 1097 gold eagle coins.
  • 1878 - William E. DuBois authenticates the 1804 Draped Bust dollar of Robert Coulton Davis.
  • 1965 - Groundbreaking ceremonies are held for construction of a new mint building in Philadelphia.
  • 2008 - A tractor-trailer transporting 3.5 million 2008 Jefferson 5-cent coins crashes into the back of another truck on Interstate 95 near Mims, Florida, scattering the coins along the highway.

Sports history:

  • 1920 - The American Pro Football Association is organized in Canton, Ohio, USA.
  • 1928 - Pitcher Ray Boggs hits three batters in one inning.
  • 1937 - First NFL game in Washington, DC; Washington Redskins beat New York Giants 13-3.
  • 1950 - San Francisco 49ers (formerly AAFC) play first NFL game, lose 21-17.
  • 1954 - Heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano knocks out Ezzard Charles in eight rounds.
  • 1956 - New York Yankees clinch pennant #22 on Mickey Mantle's 50th homer of the year.
  • 1961 - Minnesota Vikings' first NFL game (beat Chicago Bears 37-13).
  • 1964 - Mickey Mantle gets hits number 1999, 2000 and 2001.
  • 1967 - New Orleans Saints' first NFL game, they lose to Los Angeles Rams 27-13.
  • 1968 - Gaylord Perry (San Francisco Giants) no-hits Saint Louis Cardinals, 1-0.
  • 1974 - Courageous (US) beats Southern Cross (Australia) in 23rd America's Cup.
  • 1977 - Dave Kingman hits his first New York Yankees' homer, Reggie Jackson hits two more.
  • 1982 - New Jersey Devils' first exhibition game, beating the Washington Capitals 3-1 in Hershey, Pennsylvania.
  • 1984 - On the seventeenth anniversary of his first major league home-run, Reggie Jackson hits his 500th career home run.
  • 1984 - New York Mets' Dwight Goodin becomes second to strikeout 32 over two consecutive games.
  • 1986 - Marina Stepanova of USSR sets the 400m hurdle woman's record (52.94).
  • 1988 - Jeff Reardon becomes first to record 40 or more saves in both American League and National League.
  • 1988 - (to October 2) The Games of the XXIV Olympiad are held in Seoul, Korea.
  • 1990 - The Toronto Blue Jays set a major league single-season attendance record of 49,902.
  • 1991 - 4,355 turn out to see the Montreal Expos play the New York Mets at Shea Stadium.
  • 2004 - The 2004 Summer Paralympics commences in Athens, Greece.
  • 2004 - Barry Bonds hits his 700th career home run, third player in major league baseball to reach the milestone.

  • 1787 - The United States Constitution is signed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
  • 1862 - Battle of Sharpsburg (Antietam) - bloodiest day of the war between the USA and CSA, 22,000 killed and wounded on both sides.
  • 1868 - The currency production bureau of the federal government becomes officially called the Bureau of Engraving and Printing.
  • 1873 - Nineteen students attend opening class at Ohio State University.
  • 1911 - First US transcontinental airplane flight, New York to Pasadena in 82 hours 4 min.

  • 2001 - The Dow Jones Industrial Average closes for the day down 684.81 points (7.1 percent), the second largest one-day point drop.
  • 2011 - Occupy Wall Street protests begin in the United States. This develops into the Occupy movement which spreads to 82 countries by October.
