Personal computer history:

  • 1995 - Apple Computer recalls all PowerBook 5300 computers to exchange Sony-manufactured lithium-ion batteries for nickel-metal-hydride batteries, due to two fires in early units white charging.
  • 1998 - At the end of the day's stock market trading Microsoft stands as America's most valuable company, at US$261.1 billion. Microsoft and General Electric were both valued at over US$300 billion in July, but Microsoft survived a stock market plunge better, putting it on top.
  • 1999 - Handspring releases the Handspring Visor Deluxe handheld computer. It features 16 MHz Motorola Dragonball EZ processor, 8 MB RAM, 2 MB ROM, Springboard expansion slot, Palm OS 3.1, 2.1 x 2.1 inch passive matrix 16-shade grayscale backlit display, infrared port, microphone, USB port. Two AAA alkaline batteries power the unit for about two months. Price is about US$250; size is 4.8 x 3.0 x 0.6 inches; weight is 6 ounces.
  • 2000 - Microsoft launches the Windows Millenium Edition (Me) operating system.
  • 2004 - Electronic Arts releases The Sims 2 game for Windows computers in the US.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1941 - The strike at the Disney studio officially ends.
  • 1955 - The ABC TV network begins airing the second season of the Disneyland TV show, featuring the film Dumbo.
  • 1955 - Disney re-releases the animated short film Peter and the Wolf to theaters. It was originally released as part of the film Make Mine Music.
  • 1955 - Disney releases the True-Life Adventure film The African Lion to theaters in the US.
  • 1964 - US President Lyndon Johnson presents Walt Disney with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, for a lifetime of achievement.
  • 1969 - The NBC TV network airs the The Wonderful World of Disney show, featuring Wild Geese Calling.
  • 1975 - The NBC TV network airs The Wonderful World of Disney show, featuring The Boy Who Talked to Badgers, part one. This is the premiere for this season, with the air date changed from 7:30-8:30 PM to 7:00-8:00 PM.
  • 1979 - Eleven more animators leave Disney. The group forms the new studio of Sullivan and Bluth.
  • 1980 - The Mickey Mouse Revue attraction in the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World closes.
  • 1984 - The Disney committee responsible for screening potential new CEOs meets. After two hours, they have not settled on one candidate. Some favor Dennis Stanfill, some favor Frank Wells or Michael Eisner.
  • 1984 - Irwin Jacobs announces that he now owns 7.7 percent of Disney stock.

  • 1985 - The CBS TV network begins airing the animated weekly show The Wuzzles.
  • 1985 - The NBC TV network begins airing the animated weekly TV show Disney's Adventures of the Gummi Bears.
  • 1985 - The NBC TV network begins airing the Disney show The Golden Girls.
  • 1991 - The Main Street Electrical Parade makes its last run in the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World.
  • 1991 - The NBC TV network debuts the series Nurses.
  • 1993 - The Fox TV network first airs the Disney show Bakersfield P.D..
  • 1994 - Buena Vista Pictures makes a limited release of the Hollywood Pictures live-action feature film Quiz Show in theaters in New York.
  • 1994 - General Electric offers to sell 49% of NBC TV to Disney. Michael Eisner initially agrees, but later in the day decides it is not a good deal to take.
  • 1999 - Buena Vista Home Video releases the film God Said Ha! on videocassette.
  • 1999 - Buena Vista Home Video releases the film Children of Heaven on videocassette.
  • 1999 - At 2:00 PM in Walt Disney World, the Magic Kingdom Park and Epcot close early, due to Hurricane Floyd approaching the Central Florida coastline. Other areas close at 3:00 PM.
  • 2002 - The ABC TV network begins airing the show Fillmore.
  • 2005 - Disney releases the film Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch on videocassette and DVD in France.
  • 2010 - (to November 1) Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom hosts "Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party".
  • 2012 - Disney releases the film Barfi! to theaters in India and the USA.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1971 - The Corvette production line shuts down temporarily.
  • 2002 - At Le Circuit Mont-Tremblant in Mont Tremblant, Quebec, Canada, round seven of the Grand-Am Cup series is held.
    • Finishing 1st in GSI class and 1st overall is the Powell Motorsport #11 Corvette, driven by Devon Powell and Doug Goad.
    • Finishing 10th in GSI class and 44th overall is the Powell Motorsport #02 Corvette, driven by Michael Weinberg and Stuart Hayner.

  • 2008 - National Auto Sport Association 3rd Annual National Competition at Mid-Ohio Raceway.
    • Finishing 1st in class in ST1 race is the Pfadt Race Engineering C5 Corvette driven by Aaron Pfadt.
    • Finishing 2nd in class in ST1 race Corvette C5 driven by Danny Popp.
    • Finishing 3rd in class in ST1 race Corvette C5 driven by Bob Mayer.

World War II history:

  • 1938 - British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain announces in the House of Commons that he would meet with the Adolf Hitler the next day.
  • 1939 - (1015 hours) Polish mayor Skupien surrenders Gydnia city to German General Magnus Eberhardt.
  • 1939 - German General Heinz Guderian's armored corps captures Brest Litovsk, Poland.
  • 1939 - German troops complete the encirclement of Warsaw, Poland.
  • 1939 - Soviet news agency Tass reports repeated violations by Polish military airplanes over Soviet land. Some chased out, some forced down.
  • 1939 - The Soviet Union calls for one million new recruits for the Red Army.
  • 1939 - Off north-west Ireland, German submarine U-39 attacks British carrier Ark Royal, but torpedoes miss. Escorting destroyers use depth charges to force U-39 to the surface. The submarine crew is taken prisoner, and the submarine becomes the first German submarine sunk in the war.
  • 1942 - In the Atlantic ocean, Royal Canadian Navy destroyer Ottawa sinks as a result of torpedo hits from the previous day.
  • 1942 - (evening) 446 British bombers attack Bremen, damaging the Focke-Wulf aircraft factory and the Lloyd dynamo factory.
  • 1943 - German Lieutenant General Fridolin von Senger und Etterlin receives orders from Adolf Hitler to execute some 200 captured Italian officers. He refuses.
  • 1943 - A German guided aerial bomb sinks tanker Bushrod Washington off Salerno, Italy.
  • 1944 - (1200 hours) Canadians withdraw back across the Leopold and Lys canals, due to strong German resistance.
  • 1944 - British Bomber Command attacks Raaphorst, a suburb of Wassenaar, Netherlands, suspected as a site of V-2 rocket storage.
  • 1944 - Canadian infantry from the ship Prince David liberate the Greek island of Kithera.
  • 1946 - Poland issues a postage stamp in memory of the postal employees killed in the German attack on Danzig, September 1939.

Video game history:

  • 1998 - Capcom releases the Resident Evil Director's Cut Dual Shock Version video game for the PlayStation in the US.
  • 2001 - In Japan, Nintendo launches the GameCube video game system. It features 405 MHz "Gekko" processor based on a 256-bit IBM Power PC, and 43 MB RAM. Size is 6 x 6 x 4.3 inches; price is 25,000 yen. Code name during development was Dolphin.
  • 2001 - Nintendo releases the Luigi's Mansion video game for the GameCube in Japan.
  • 2001 - Nintendo releases the Wave Race: Blue Storm video game for the GameCube in Japan.
  • 2001 - Sega releases the Super Monkey Ball video game for the GameCube in Japan.
  • 2004 - Microsoft releases the Fable video game for the Xbox in the US.
  • 2005 - Microsoft announces the price for the upcoming Xbox 360 in Japan: 37,900 yen (about US$345). Dates of release are November 22 in North America, December 2 in Europe, and December 10 in Japan.
  • 2006 - Nintendo announces release date of November 19 for the Nintendo Wii video game system in the USA, with price US$249.99.
  • 2008 - Electronic Arts releases the Rock Band 2 video game for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, and Nintendo Wii in the USA and Canada.
  • 2009 - Nintendo releases the Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story video game for the Nintendo DS in the USA.
  • 2010 - Microsoft Game Studios releases the Halo: Reach video game for the Xbox 360 in the US.

Swedish history:

  • 1706 - By the treaty of Altranstädt, Saxony Elector August is forced to make peace. August renounces claims to the Polish throne.
  • 1981 - Prime Minister Thorbjörn Fälldin announces a currency devaluation of 10%, price freezes, and a planned reduction in sales tax.
  • 2003 - A Nationwide referendum is held asking if Sweden should join the European Monetary Union, and abandon the Krona in favor of the Euro. The vote is 56.1 percent no, 41.8 percent yes.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1967 - The Finance Minister announces that the reverse designs of coins in 1968 will return to those used prior to 1967.

USA coin history:

  • 1793 - Joseph Wright, engraver at the Philadelphia Mint, dies of yellow fever.
  • 2008 - A granite memorial stone to Felix Schlag, designer of the Jefferson 5-cent coin, is dedicated at his grave site in Oak Hill Cemetery in Owosso, Michigan.

  • 1971 - Cleveland Indians and Washington Senators play 20 innings.
  • 1973 - Indianapolis is awarded a WHA franchise.
  • 1973 - US President Richard Nixon signs into law a measure lifting pro football's blackout.
  • 1982 - Trevor Baxter sets skateboard high jump record of 5 feet 5.7 inches.
  • 1986 - At Royals Stadium, Kansas City Royals' rookie outfieder Bo Jackson hits his first major league home run. The 475-foot hit by the NFL running back is the longest homer ever hit in the ballpark.
  • 1986 - Saskatchewan Roughriders and Hamilton Tiger-Cats play first Canadian Football League regular-season overtime game.
  • 1987 - The Toronto Blue Jays beat the Baltimore Orioles 18-3; the Blue Jays set a major league record of ten home runs; Orioles' player Cal Ripken Junior sets record consecutive-innings streak of 8,243, spanning 904 games.
  • 1989 - Calgary Flames become first NHL team to play in USSR, win 4-2.
  • 1994 - Due to the Major League Baseball players' strike, owners vote to cancel remainder of the season including the World Series.
  • 2021 - The inaugural season of the UEFA Europa Conference League, the third tier of European club football, kicks off with Israeli club Maccabi Tel Aviv winning 4-1 against Armenian club FC Alashkert.
  • 2022 - At Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Arizona Diamondbacks beats Los Angeles Dodgers by score 5-3.
  • 2022 - At Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Oakland Athletics beats Texas Rangers by score 8-7.
  • 2022 - At Busch Stadium in Saint Louis, Missouri, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Saint Louis Cardinals beats Milwaukee Brewers by score 4-1.
