Personal computer history:

  • 1958 - At Texas Instruments, Jack Kilby demonstrates the world's first integrated circuit, containing five components on a piece of germanium half an inch long and thinner than a toothpick.
  • 1983 - Apple Computer reduces the price of the Lisa computer with software from US$9995 to US$8190, and also makes the Lisa available without software for US$6995.
  • 1985 - At the Apple Computer annual board meeting, chairman Steve Jobs announces that he will start a new company, to build computers for the higher-education market.
  • 1991 - Sony introduces the Data Discman, a handheld computer that can operate on small compact discs costing US$20-50 each. Release is set for November, with price US$550.
  • 1992 - Electronic Arts announces it will acquire Origin Systems.
  • 2002 - Cyprus issues a 30 cent postage stamp depicting a personal computer.
  • 2003 - The Disney Channel airs the Kim Possible TV show in the USA. The episode is about playing in a multiplayer online game called "Everlot", a reference to EverQuest played on personal computers.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1936 - The Mickey Mouse film Donald and Pluto is released to theaters. Donald Duck and Pluto star, without Mickey Mouse.
  • 1941 - The Donald Duck film Old Macdonald Duck is released to theaters.
  • 1947 - The Donald Duck film Wide Open Spaces is released.
  • 1956 - The ABC TV network begins airing the third season of the Disneyland show, featuring "Antarctica, Past and Present".
  • 1958 - The ABC TV network premieres the Walt Disney Presents TV show, on Friday nights, 8:00 to 9:00. The show was previously titled Disneyland and aired on Wednesday nights.
  • 1976 - The America on Parade parade ends at Disneyland.
  • 1984 - (8:00 AM) Michael Eisner meets with Ray Watson and board member Philip Hawley, to try to convince Hawley that Eisner is the right choice for Disney's CEO.
  • 1984 - Michael Eisner resigns from Paramount Pictures. Barry Diller asks him to join him at Twentieth Century Fox. ABC asks him to join them and create a film division. Eisner turns down all offers, waiting for developments at Disney.
  • 1986 - The 3-D film Captain Eo, starring Michael Jackson, opens in the Magic Eye Theater in EPCOT Center at Walt Disney World. It cost over US$17 million to produce, making it the most costly movie to date, at about US$1 million per minute. Lucasfilm provided more than 150 special effects for the 17-minute movie.
  • 1987 - The last episode of The Ellen Burstyn Show airs.
  • 1987 - The Fox TV networks airs the last episode of Down and Out in Beverly Hills.
  • 1992 - The CBS TV network airs the first show of Disney's The Little Mermaid, entitled Whale of a Tail.
  • 1992 - The ABC TV network begins airing episodes of Goof Troop.
  • 1992 - The CBS TV network begins airing the animated TV series Raw Toonage.
  • 1992 - The NBC TV network airs the last episode of The Golden Girls.
  • 1992 - The film Beauty and the Beast is released to theaters in Japan.
  • 1994 - Disney's syndicated TV show Judge for Yourself first airs.
  • 2003 - Disney releases the Touchstone Pictures live-action feature film Cold Creek Manor to theaters in the US.
  • 2005 - In Hong Kong, China, Hong Kong Disneyland park opens. Michael Eisner and China's vice president Zeng Qinghong attend the opening.
  • 2005 - The Comet Café food court opens in Tomorrowland in Hong Kong Disneyland.
  • 2005 - The Chopin's Festival of Foods food court opens in Fantasyland in Hong Kong Disneyland.
  • 2005 - The Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters attraction opens in Hong Kong Disneyland.
  • 2005 - The Cinderella Carousel opens in Hong Kong Disneyland.
  • 2005 - Hong Kong issues six postage stamps depicting the grand opening of Hong Kong Disneyland. Characters include Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Dumbo, Simba and Nala, and Pluto.
  • 2006 - Apple Computer announces the iTunes movie store, initially with 75 Disney company movies for download. Prices range from US$10 to 16 per film.
  • 2008 - The Disney Channel airs the final Cory in the House TV series.
  • 2009 - At Disney's D23 Expo in Anaheim, California, Jay Rasulo, chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, announces Fantasyland at Walt Disney World will undergo an extensive transformation and expansion, tripling in size by 2013.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1956 - Authorization is given to complete a non-running seating buck for project XP-64. This will be used to determine location of pedals, instruments, etc.
  • 1981 - At the Mosport Park raceway in Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada, the CRC Chemicals Trans-Am Championship - Round 7 race is held.
    • Finishing 4th is the Full-Time Racing #99 Corvette, driven by Phil Currin.
    • Finishing 9th is the Jepsen #60 Corvette, driven by John Brandt.
    • Finishing 11th is the Cooke-Woods #2 Corvette, driven by Roy Woods.
    • Finishing 14th is the USA #85 Corvette, driven by Richard Valentine.
    • Finishing 16th is the #35 Corvette, driven by Jim Sanborn.
    • Finishing 20th is the #93 Corvette, driven by Mike Oleyar.
    • Finishing 23rd is the Wava Racing #49 Corvette, driven by Brian Utt.
    • In 26th place, but not finishing the race, is the Lamberts #70 Corvette, driven by Murray Edwards.

  • 1987 - In Columbus, Ohio, the McDorman Chevrolet dealership holds a Corvette show and auction over two days. Of 76 Corvettes at auction, 32 are sold.
  • 2003 - The film Trivia for Crosst is shown at the Great Lakes Film Festival in the USA. A Corvette is used in the film.
  • 2004 - At the Homestead-Miami Speedway in Homestead, Florida, the Miami 250 race is held, round nine of the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series. Finishing 6th in SGS class and 23rd overall is the Michael Baughman Racing #46 Corvette, driven by Michael Baughman and Mike Yeakle.
  • 2021 - At the WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, California, USA, the WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca race is held, round 9 of the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship series.
    • Finishing 1st in GT Le Mans class and 11th overall is the Corvette Racing #4 Corvette C8.R driven by Tommy Milner and Nick Tandy.
    • Finishing 2nd in GT Le Mans class and 12th overall is the Corvette Racing #3 Corvette C8.R driven by Jordan Taylor and Antonio Garcia.

World War II history:

  • 1938 - German Chancellor Adolf Hitler says the Sudeten problem is an internal matter to the German minority in Bohemia and the Czechoslovak government.
  • 1939 - In Poland, the Polish army west of the Vistula River is trapped in Kutno and Radom pockets, and capital Warsaw is almost completely surrounded.
  • 1939 - The Washington and Jefferson College in Washington, Pennsylvania, begins offering a course on the "second world war".
  • 1939 - The Soviet Government reports three German war planes in Polish colors shot down over Minsk region of Russia, with German crewmen.
  • 1939 - The official German News Bureau in East Silesia issues a special report saying that "Removal of the Polish Jewish population from the European domain would ... bring a solution of the Jewish question in Europe nearer.".
  • 1940 - Canada's cabinet introduces Order In Council P.C. 4751, giving Canadian authorities power to imprison disobedient foreign seamen from non-Canadian ships in Canadian ports.
  • 1941 - US President Franklin Roosevelt warns that the US Navy will shoot first at German and Italian submarines in the American defense zone.
  • 1941 - Kleist moves Panzer Group 1 from Kremenchug to form part of a pincer ring around Soviets protecting Kiev.
  • 1942 - German submarine U-156 sinks British liner Laconia in the South Atlantic, 900 miles south of Freetown, Sierra Leone, and 250 miles northeast of Ascension Island. The ship was used as a transport by the British Admiralty, with over 1500 Italian prisoners of war, 180 Polish guards, 811 British passengers and crew.
  • 1943 - German 29th Panzergrenadier Division and 16th Panzer Division thrust between British and Americans near Salerno, driving the British out of Battipaglia.
  • 1943 - (1400 hours) Eight German gliders land at Campo Imperiale Hotel in the Abruzzi, Italy. Seventy parachutists and Waffen-SS commandos take over, and rescue Mussolini. The operation is over within twenty minutes.
  • 1944 - (about 0615 hours) A sixth German V-2 rocket hits England, landing at the Chrysler vehicle works in Mortlake Road, Kew, killing eight, injuring 14, and causing enormous damage.
  • 1944 - (0819 hours) A seventh German V-2 rocket hits England, landing in Dagenham, injuring 84.
  • 1944 - American forces reach the German frontier south of Aachen.
  • 1944 - British Bomber Command makes air raids on oil targets in Dortmund, Scholver/Buer, and Wanne-Eickel in Germany.
  • 1944 - British Bomber Command makes a daytime air raid on Munster, Germany, causing serious destruction.
  • 1944 - Adolf Hitler issues orders for fortifications to be built in Southern Austria.
  • 1944 - Le Havre, France is liberated.
  • 1944 - Canadian forces clear Brugge town of Germans.

Video game history:

  • 1989 - NEC Home Electronics introduces a coin-operated version of the TurboGrafx-16 video game system.
  • 2003 - Sega releases the ESPN NHL Hockey 2K4 video game for the Xbox and PlayStation 2 in the US.
  • 2006 - EA Sports releases the NHL 07 video game for the PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, Xbox, and Xbox 360 in the US.
  • 2006 - LucasArts releases the LEGO Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy video game for the PlayStation Portable, Game Boy Advance, Xbox 360, Game Cube, Nintendo DS, Xbox, and PlayStation 2 in the US.
  • 2006 - Koei releases the Samurai Warriors 2 video game for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox 360 in the US.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1990 - In New York City, Bowers and Merena conduct the auction of the Robert W. Rusbar Collection. Some Canadian coin highlights:
    • 50 cents 1921 MS-64: US$67,000;
    • $10 1910 Gem Specimen-68: US$34,100.

Sports history:

  • 1885 - Highest score (35) recorded in any first-class soccer match is set.
  • 1895 - Defender (US) beats Valkyrie III (England) in 10th America's Cup.
  • 1920 - Games of the VII Olympiad close in Antwerp, Belgium.
  • 1932 - Brooklyn Dodgers' Johnny Frederick hits his record 6th pinch-hit home run.
  • 1947 - Pittsburgh Pirates' player Ralph Kiner hits his record 8th home run in four games.
  • 1954 - Cleveland Indians sweep New York Yankees at Municipal Stadium; largest American League crowd (86,563).
  • 1962 - Washington Senators' Tom Cheney strikes out record 21 Baltimore Orioles in 16-inning game.
  • 1964 - First football game at Shea Stadium: New York Jets defeat Denver Broncos 30-6.
  • 1964 - Ralph Boston of the US sets long jump record at 27 feet 4.5 inches.
  • 1972 - Lord Michael Killanin succeeds Avery Brundage as head of Olympics.
  • 1976 - Seattle Seahawks play first regular-season game (Saint Louis 30, Seattle 24).
  • 1976 - Chicago White Sox player Minnie Minoso at age 53 hits a single.
  • 1979 - Pietro Mennea of Italy sets the 200m record (19.72) in Mexico City.
  • 1979 - Boston Red Sox Carl Yastrzemski gets his 3,000th hit off New York Yankees' pitcher Jim Beattie.
  • 1984 - New York Mets' Dwight Goodin sets rookie strike out record at 251.
  • 1987 - Vince Coleman steals his 100th base for third straight year.
  • 1988 - First NFL regular-season game played in Phoenix, Arizona; Dallas Cowboys beat Arizona Cardinals.
  • 2005 - The English cricket team draws the final match to win The 2005 Ashes.
  • 2021 - At the WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, California, USA, the WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca race is held, round 9 of the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship series.

  • 2002 - U.S. President George W. Bush addresses the United Nations, and challenges its members to confront the "grave and gathering danger" of Iraq, or stand aside as the United States and likeminded nations act.
  • 2007 - US dollar falls to new low versus euro: $1.39.
  • 2008 - A Metrolink train collides head-on into a freight train in Los Angeles, California, killing 25 and injuring 130.

  • 1990 - US, England, France, USSR, East and West Germanys sign agreements allowing the 2 Germanys to merge.
  • 2002 - U.S. President George W. Bush addresses the U.N., and challenges its members to confront the "grave and gathering danger" of Iraq, or stand aside as the United States and likeminded nations act.
  • 2005 - The Norwegian parliamentary election results in a victory for the red-green-coalition. The new prime-minister is Jens Stoltenberg from the Labour Party.
