Personal computer history:

  • 1997 - Motorola Computer Group announces it is leaving the Macintosh systems market, due to inability to reach a viable business agreement with Apple Computer on licensing the Mac OS. Motorola also announces it will not ship StarMax 6000 systems previously announced.
  • 2009 - The United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit overturns a US$358 million damages award against Microsoft in a patent dispute with French telecoms equipment firm Alcatel-Lucent. The judge agreed Microsoft did infringe the patents, but said the damages awarded were not justified.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1926 - Disney ships the 40th Alice Comedy film, Alice the Golf Bug, to Winkler Pictures.
  • 1957 - The ABC TV network begins airing the fourth season of the Disneyland TV show, celebrating the fourth anniversary of the show.
  • 1966 - The NBC TV network airs the Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color show, featuring Emil and the Detectives, part one.
  • 1968 - In Marceline, Missouri, the United States Postal Service issues a 6-cent postage stamp, the first stamp honoring Walt Disney.
  • 1984 - Ray Watson and Phil Hawley interview Michael Eisner for the job of CEO at Disney.
  • 1984 - Michael Eisner and Paramount Pictures production chief Jeffrey Katzenberg fly to New York to discuss with Marvin Davis who would take over running Paramount Pictures.
  • 1987 - Disney releases the film Outrageous Fortune to theaters in the UK.
  • 1988 - The last The Disney Sunday Movie airs on ABC TV.
  • 1992 - Disney releases the Touchstone Pictures live-action feature film Crossing the Bridge to theatres.
  • 1993 - The ABC TV network airs the last episode of Goof Troop.
  • 1993 - The ABC TV network airs the last show of the Darkwing Duck series.
  • 1995 - The syndicated TV talk show Danny first airs.
  • 2001 - Following four plane crashes in the US, Michael Eisner and Robert Iger decide to stage an orderly closing of Walt Disney World, and not open Disneyland or Disney's California Adventure for the day.
  • 2002 - Disney releases the film Tuck Everlasting to theaters in the USA.
  • 2005 - The live show Festival of the Lion King gives its premiere performance at the Theater in the Wild in Hong Kong Disneyland.
  • 2009 - The Walt Disney Family Foundation shows film Walt and El Grupo in Los Angeles and New York. The film is about Walt Disney's 1941 goodwill tour to South America.
  • 2009 - Disney Cruise Line announces it will offer Alaskan cruises during a four-month season of seven-night sailings aboard the Disney Wonder in summer 2011, departing out of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1956 - Edward Cole informs Bill Mitchell that the XP-64 would not be shown at the New York Automobile Show, but three race versions should be completed by early January for testing prior to the Sebring race.
  • 1976 - The Bob McDorman Chevrolet dealer holds his third annual Corvette concours and swap meet, over two days. Winner of the concours, Bill Munzer with his red on red 1963 fuel injected coupe, receives a new 1976 Corvette.
  • 1977 - At Le Circuit Mont Tremblant in St. Jovite, Quebec, Canada, the Molson SCCA Trans-Am Championship - Round 11 race is held.
    • Finishing 1st in category I and 3rd overall is the Dead Bear Racing #5 Corvette, driven by Bill Adam.
    • Finishing 2nd in category I and 5th overall is the King Engine #80 Corvette 454, driven by Nick Engels.
    • Finishing 6th in category I and 12th overall is the M.E. Racing #111 Corvette, driven by Murray Edwards.
    • Finishing 8th in category I and 15th overall is the Brandt Moving & Storage #60 Corvette 350, driven by John Brandt Jr.
    • Finishing 8th in category II and 16th overall is the R.J.V. Enterprises #91 Corvette, driven by Richard Valentine.
    • Finishing 10th in category I and 18th overall is the Leader Automotive #10 Corvette 454, driven by Ron Weaver.
    • Finishing 11th in category I and 20th overall is the Auto Barn #64 Corvette 427, driven by Robert Baechle.

  • 2004 - At the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, California, the Trans-Am 100 race is held, round nine (final) of the Motorock Trans-Am Series.
    • Finishing 3rd is the Derhaag Motorsports #40 Corvette, driven by Ron Fellows.
    • Finishing 5th is the Derhaag Motorsports #49 Corvette, driven by Randy Ruhlman.
    • Finishing 9th is the Simms Motorsports #24 Corvette, driven by Philip Simms.
    • In 14th place, but not finishing the race, is the #06 Corvette, driven by Joey Scarallo.

  • 2004 - At the end of the Trans-Am series racing season, the Derhaag Motorsports #49 Corvette driven by Randy Ruhlman is 3rd in points, the highest ranking Corvette.

World War II history:

  • 1935 - British Foreign Secretary Sir Samuel Hoare calls on all members of the League of Nations to follow policy of "steady and collective resistance to all acts of unprovoked aggression."
  • 1939 - France notifies the League of Nations that it is at war with Germany, as of 1700 hours September 3.
  • 1939 - The British Ministry of Information announces the British Government would not conclude peace with a German Government headed by Adolf Hitler.
  • 1939 - President Juan Arosema of Panama proclaims the neutrality of Panama.
  • 1940 - Adolf Hitler postpones invasion of Great Britain to September 24.
  • 1941 - (0045 hours) Convoy SC-42 across the Atlantic is attacked by German submarines. U-207 torpedoes and sinks SS Stonepool. Three more merchant ships are torpedoed by the end of the day.
  • 1941 - (afternoon) As part of Atlantic Convoy SC-42, British destroyers Veteran and Leamington sink German submarine U-207.
  • 1942 - In the St. Lawrence River, near Cap Chat, Quebec, Canada, submarine U-517 torpedoes and sinks Royal Canadian Navy corvette Charlottetown. Ten die.
  • 1942 - (evening) 479 British aircraft attack Düsseldorf. 20,000 are made homeless.
  • 1943 - German Fritz X guided aerial bomb cripples USS Savannah off Salerno, Italy. About 200 are killed.
  • 1943 - The Italian Navy surrenders its warships to the Allies at Malta.
  • 1944 - (about 0905 hours) A fourth German V-2 rocket hits England, landing at Chelsfield, near Orpington, in Kent, 16 miles from London. There are no casualites.
  • 1944 - (about 0935 hours) A fifth German V-2 rocket hits England, landing at Magdalen Laver, near Harlow, in Essex. There are no casualites.
  • 1944 - Allied forces on land cross into Germany.
  • 1944 - The Royal Highland Regiment of Canada (Black Watch) of the 5th Canadian Infantry Brigade captures the town or Spycker in northern France.
  • 1944 - 38 British Lancaster bombers take off from Britain, headed for Yagodnik airfield near Archangel, in Russia. Their mission is to then launch attacks on the German battleship Tirpitz in Kaafjord, off Altenfjord.
  • 1944 - 129 British Halifax bombers make a daytime attack on oil plants at Castrop-Rauxel, Kamen, and Gelsenkirchen in Germany. Nine bombers are shot down; 90 are damaged.
  • 1944 - (to September 16) In Quebec City, Canada, Prime Minister William King hosts the Octagon Conference with British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and American President Franklin Roosevelt. They discuss Germany, European military strategy, and the war against Japan.
  • 1944 - About 300 British bombers attack Le Havre, France. Since September 5, about 2500 sorties have been flown, dropping 9750 tons of bombs.

Video game history:

  • 1997 - Midway Amusement Games releases the Mortal Kombat 4 video game Version 1.0 to arcades in the US.
  • 2005 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. A child complains that Santa Claus gave him a PlayStation box with nothing inside but a coloring book.
  • 2012 - EA Sports releases the NHL 13 video game for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
  • 2012 - Namco releases the Tekken Tag Tournament 2 video game for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in the USA.

Swedish history:

  • 1962 - In Stockholm, Canada and Sweden sign an agreement for co-operation in peaceful uses of atomic energy.
  • 1978 - Ronnie Peterson dies in a racecar crash on the Monza Racetrack outside Milan, Italy. He was Sweden's biggest racing driver, winning ten Formula 1 competitions.
  • 2001 - Marshall Islands issues a postage stamp depicting a 1927 Volvo OV4 car.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1989 - In New York City, New York, Bowers and Merena hold an auction of The Kissel and Victoria Collection of Canadian and Provincial Coins. A "superb Uncirculated" 1921 50c piece sells for US$110,000. A second 1921 50c coin grading MS-60 sells for US$37,500.

USA coin history:

  • 1936 - Master dies for the Columbia, South Carolina, Sesquicentennial half dollar are completed.
  • 1981 - US District Judge John H. Pratt rules the Copper and Brass Fabricators Council does not have standing to bring suit against the US Mint switching cent to copper-plated zinc.

Sports history:

  • 1839 - First Canadian track and field meet held (Caer Howell Grounds).
  • 1886 - Sailing ship Mayflower (US) beats Galatea (England) in 7th America's Cup.
  • 1903 - The first race is held at the oldest major speedway in the world, The Milwaukee Mile in West Allis, Wisconsin, USA.
  • 1912 - Philadelphia Athletics' Eddie Collins steals six bases in one game.
  • 1918 - Boston Red Sox beat Chicago Cubs, four games to two in 15th World Series.
  • 1923 - After a single, Boston Red Sox player Howard Ehmke retires the next 27 New York Yankees.
  • 1926 - US defeats France for their 7th straight Davis Cup championship.
  • 1926 - New York Yankees' Bob Meusel ties record with three sacrifice flies.
  • 1935 - US captures Davis Cup for 7th straight year.
  • 1936 - Philadelphia Athletics' pitcher Horace Lisenbee gives up 26 hits in a game.
  • 1956 - Cincinnati Reds' player Frank Robinson ties rookie record with his 38th home run.
  • 1959 - Elroy Face's 22-game win streak ends as Los Angeles Dodgers beat Pittsburgh Pirates 5-4.
  • 1959 - Baltimore Orioles' player Jerry Walker pitches 16 innings beating Chicago White Sox 1-0.
  • 1960 - The Games of the XVII Olympiad close in Rome, Italy.
  • 1964 - Gillette's 20-year contract with Madison Square Gardens and ABC to televise fights for free ends as Dick Tiger defeats Don Fullmer at the Cleveland Auditorium.
  • 1966 - Johnny Miller becomes the first New York Yankees' player to hit a home run on his first at bat.
  • 1974 - Saint Louis Cardinals beat New York Mets, 4-3, in 25 innings (7 hours 4 minutes), record 202 plate appearances, Felix Milan and John Milner come to bat 12 times each.
  • 1976 - Evonne Goolagong loses her fourth straight US Open Final (Chris Evert wins).
  • 1977 - Guillermo Vilas beats Jimmy O'Connors winning US Open.
  • 1982 - Chris Evert scores 6th US Open tennis title defeating Hana Mandlikava.
  • 1983 - Franco Harris becomes third NFL player to rush 11,000 yards.
  • 1985 - At Riverfront Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio, Major League Baseball player/manager Pete Rose of the Cincinnati Reds gets career record hit 4,192 off Eric Show of San Diego Padres, eclipsing Ty Cobb's record.
  • 1999 - Eric Milton of the Minnesota Twins pitches a 7-0 no-hitter against the Anaheim Angels.
  • 2004 - Barry Bonds becomes the first major league baseball player to walk over 200 times in a single season.
  • 2007 - (to September 24) Inaugural Twenty20 World Championship is held.
  • 2008 - Asian broadcaster ESPN Star Sports pays nearly US$1 billion for the commercial and marketing rights to the inaugural Twenty20 Champions League of cricket for the next ten years.
  • 2022 - At AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, USA, National Football League regular season game: Tampa Bay Buccaneers beats Dallas Cowboys by score 19-3.
  • 2022 - At SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, USA, National Football League regular season game: Los Angeles Chargers beats Las Vegas Raiders by score 24-19.
  • 2022 - At State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, USA, National Football League regular season game: Kansas City Chiefs beats Arizona Cardinals by score 44-21.
  • 2022 - At U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, National Football League regular season game: Minnesota Vikings beats Green Bay Packers by score 23-7.
  • 2022 - At Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee, USA, National Football League regular season game: New York Giants beats Tennessee Titans by score 21-20.
  • 2022 - At NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, USA, National Football League regular season game: Houston Texans ties Indianapolis Colts by score 20-20.

  • 2009 - Japan successfully launches its new space freighter, 16.5-tonne unmanned H-II Transfer Vehicle, from the Tanegashima base in the south of the country, on a mission to re-supply the International Space Station.
  • 2009 - The space shuttle Discovery lands at Edwards Air Force Base in California at the end of a two-week mission to the International Space Station.
  • 2019 - Astronomers announce the detection of water in the atmosphere of exoplanet K2-18b, the first such discovery for an exoplanet in the habitable zone around a star.

Extreme weather history:

  • 1992 - Hurricane Iniki hits the Hawaiian Islands, Kauai and Oahu.
  • 1995 - Westbound to New York, cruise liner Queen Elizabeth 2 is hit by a 95-foot wave, denting the forward deck plating.

USA history:

  • 1777 - Battle of Brandywine, Pennsylvania; Americans lose to British.
  • 1786 - Annapolis Convention to determine interstate commerce.
  • 1789 - Alexander Hamilton takes oath of office as first US Secretary of the Treasury.
  • 1814 - Battle of Lake Champlain, New York; Americans defeat British.
  • 1857 - A Mormon militia in southern Utah seizes a wagon train from Arkansas, killing 120 people.
  • 1885 - Moses Hopkins is named US minister to Liberia.
  • 1903 - The first race is held at the oldest major speedway in the world, The Milwaukee Mile in West Allis, Wisconsin, USA.
  • 1910 - First commercially-successful electric bus line opens (Hollywood, California).
  • 1915 - The Pennsylvania Railroad begins electrified commuter rail service between Paoli and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, using overhead AC trolley wires for power.
  • 1919 - US marines invade Honduras.
  • 1923 - The ZR-1 (biggest active dirigible) flies over New York's tallest skyscraper, the Woolworth Tower.
  • 1926 - Aloha Tower dedicated in Honolulu, Hawaii.
  • 1936 - President Franklin Roosevelt dedicates Boulder Dam.
  • 1941 - Ground is broken for construction of The Pentagon.
  • 1941 - Charles Lindbergh charges "the British, the Jewish and the Roosevelt administration" are trying to get the US into the war.
  • 1941 - US President Franklin Roosevelt orders any Axis ship found in American waters be shot on sight.
  • 1944 - In Quebec City, Canada, Prime Minister William King hosts a nine-day meeting with British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and American President Franklin Roosevelt. They discuss Germany, European military strategy, and the war against Japan.
  • 1950 - 33 die in a train crash in Coshocton, Ohio, USA.
  • 1950 - Dick Tracy TV show sparks uproar concerning violence.
  • 1954 - The Miss America Pageant is televised, live, for the first time, with host Bob Russell. Lee Meriwether (Miss California) is crowned Miss America by a panel of judges.
  • 1970 - The Ford Pinto automobile is introduced.
  • 1972 - Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) in San Francisco, California begins service with a 26-mile (42-km) line from Oakland to Fremont.
  • 1974 - Eastern Air Lines Flight 212 from Charleston, South Carolina to Charlotte, North Carolina crashes 3.3 miles short of the Charlotte airport, killing 72 passengers and crew.
  • 1981 - A small plane crashes into the Swing Auditorium in San Bernardino damaging the venue beyond repair.
  • 1986 - Dow Jones Industrial Average suffers biggest one-day decline ever, plummeting 86.61 points to 1,792.89. 237.57 million shares traded.
  • 1989 - Drexel formally pleads guilty to security fraud.
  • 1990 - US President George H. W. Bush delivers a nationally televised speech in which he threatens the use of force to remove Iraqi soldiers from Kuwait.
  • 1991 - Fourteen die in a Continental Express commuter plane crash near Houston, Texas.
  • 1992 - Hurricane Iniki hits the Hawaiian Islands, Kauai and Oahu.
  • 1996 - Union Pacific Railroad purchases Southern Pacific Railroad.
  • 2001 - 2740 Americans and 236 foreigners die in airplane attacks at the World Trade Center in New York City, The Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, and in rural Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
  • 2001 - Following four plane crashes in the USA, Disney Chairman Michael Eisner and Disney President Robert Iger decide to stage an orderly closing of Walt Disney World, and not open Disneyland or Disney's California Adventure for the day.
  • 2012 - (to September 27) A series of attacks are directed against United States diplomatic missions worldwide, as well as diplomatic missions of Germany, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. In Libya, among the dead is US ambassador J. Christopher Stevens.
