Personal computer history:

  • 2002 - At the Apple Expo in Paris, France, Apple Computer announces that Mac computers shipping in January will boot to Mac OS X only.
  • 2004 - Screen Gems releases the film Resident Evil: Apocalypse in the USA. A Sony VAIO laptop computer appears.
  • 2006 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. A gangster uses a Palm Pilot to schedule his meetings.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1925 - Animation work begins on the Alice Comedy film Alice Rattled by Rats.
  • 1932 - The Silly Symphony film King Neptune is released to theaters.
  • 1941 - The Conciliation Service issues a ruling, setting the ratio of layoffs of strikers to non-strikers.
  • 1948 - The Pluto film Pluto's Fledgling is released.
  • 1959 - Disney releases the live-action feature film Zorro the Avenger to theaters in Japan. The film is a compilation of several Zorro television episodes.
  • 1984 - Ray Watson and Phil Hawley meet with Dennis Stanfill, to interview him for the position of Disney's new CEO.
  • 1988 - The ABC TV network debuts The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh.
  • 1990 - The 2-hour The Disney Afternoon syndicated TV show premieres. Included is a new series, Tale Spin.
  • 1990 - The CBS TV network airs a preview of the show Lenny.
  • 1993 - The syndicated TV series Bill Nye, the Science Guy begins.
  • 1993 - The syndicated TV series Disney's Adventures in Wonderland airs.
  • 1993 - The TV series The Crusaders first airs.
  • 1993 - Disney releases the Hollywood Pictures live-action feature film Money for Nothing to theaters in the US.
  • 1996 - Touchstone Home Video releases the film Up Close & Personal on videocassette.
  • 1996 - Walt Disney Home Video releases the film Muppet Treasure Island on videocassette.
  • 1998 - The United States Postal Service issues a 32-cent postage stamp depicting Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, as part of its series of memories of the 1930s.
  • 1999 - The Tatooine Traders merchandise shop opens at the Disney-MGM Studios. The location was previously the Endor Vendors shop.
  • 2004 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Fairly Oddparents TV show in the US. The main characters in the book The Three Musketeers all wear black Mouseketeer Mickey Mouse hats.
  • 2004 - The Walt Disney Company announces that Michael Eisner will retire as CEO on September 30, 2006.
  • 2006 - The Fox Broadcasting Company airs The Simpsons TV show in the US. A gangster says "Who wants to sleep with the fishes?" and holds up a Finding Nemo bedspread.
  • 2007 - The Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique store opens in the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World.
  • 2009 - Tony Anselmo, the voice of Donald Duck, is named a Disney Legend.
  • 2009 - (to September 13) The first Disney D23 Expo is held, at the Anaheim Convention Center in California.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1956 - Chevrolet and Styling management review the XP-64 clay model. They decide to show the car at the New York Automobile Show in December.
  • 1956 - At Chevrolet, the Car Design Advisory Committee meets, over two days. They decide that project XP-64 would be a competitive racing car with special frame, suspension, engine, drivetrain, and body.

World War II history:

  • 1939 - After seven nights of British flights dropping leaflets on Germany, the operation stops due to public criticism that Britain only dropped paper while Germany dropped bombs on Poland.
  • 1939 - An article in the New York Times newspaper refers to the conflict in Poland as the "Second World War".
  • 1939 - British Expeditionary Force under Lord Gort begins arriving on mainland Europe.
  • 1939 - (1310 hours) In Ottawa, Canada, the Governor-General of Canada, Lord Tweedsmuir, announces that Parliament has declared war on Germany, as of the start of the day.
  • 1939 - The US extends its embargo on arms shipments to Canada.
  • 1941 - (0210 hours) Convoy SC-42 across the Atlantic is attacked by German submarines. U-432 torpedoes and sinks SS Winterswijk. Seven more merchant ships are torpedoed by the end of the day.
  • 1941 - A proposal to send two Canadian battalions to Hong Kong reaches British prime minister Winston Churchill's desk for approval. He accepts the recommendation.
  • 1941 - (1305 hours) In Convoy SC-42 across the Atlantic, Canadian destroyer Skeena seriously cripples German submarine U-85.
  • 1941 - (2138 hours) In Convoy SC-42 across the Atlantic, Canadian corvettes HMCS Chambly and Moosejaw sink German submarine U-501.
  • 1941 - (evening) 76 aircraft from Britain attack targets in Italy. They do little damage to military targets.
  • 1943 - American forces expand their bridgehead at Salerno, landing most of the 45th Division.
  • 1944 - German air forces attack the Tri Duby airfield in Slovakia in several waves. At the end, only four Slovak aircraft remain operational.
  • 1944 - Canadian engineers complete a bridge over the Gent Canal in Belgium, allowing tanks to cross.
  • 1944 - British General Bernard Montgomery and US General Dwight Eisenhower meet in Brussels, Belgium. Eisenhower agrees to an airborne operation with Arnhem as the first objective.
  • 1944 - Operation Comet, a one-division airborne assault toward Arnhem, becomes Operation Market Garden, involving three airborne divisions.
  • 1944 - (2129 hours) A third German V-2 rocket hits England, landing at North Fambridge near Maldon, in Essex, about 40 miles east of London. There is no damage or casualites.
  • 1984 - Luzembourg issues a postage stamp marking the 40th anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy.
  • 1992 - Palau issues ten postage stamps marking the 50th anniversary of World War II in the Pacific.
  • 1999 - Chad issues a postage stamp depicting World War II, as part of a series on the Millennium.

Video game history:

  • 1998 - Acclaim Entertainment releases the Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat II video games for the Game Boy in Japan.
  • 1998 - Sony CEA releases the Spyro the Dragon video game for the PlayStation in the US.
  • 2001 - Nintendo releases the Advance Wars video game for the Game Boy Advance in the US.
  • 2004 - Screen Gems releases the film Resident Evil: Apocalypse in the USA. The film is based on the Resident Evil video game series, and contains references to several of the Resident Evil (Biohazard) games.
  • 2007 - Sony releases a new PlayStation Portable. The updated unit is 0.75 inches thick (versus 0.9), slimmer battery, weight 6.7 ounces (versus 9.2), includes cable output to TV, 64 MB RAM (versus 32), various other modifications. Price is US$169.99.

Swedish history:

  • 1635 - Swedish Council concludes the Truce of Stuhmsdorf with Poland, surrendering Prussia to Poland for 26 years truce.
  • 2003 - Swedish Foreign Minister Anna Lindh is stabbed several times while shopping in Stockholm. She dies the following morning of heart and lung failure.

A&W Root Beer history:

  • 2002 - A & W Concentrate Company is granted a registered trademark of "A & W ROOT BEER" as applied to root beer and concentrates and syrups for making root beer.

Canadian coin history:

  • 2008 - The Royal Canadian Mint releases the 8th circulating 2010 Olympics coin, a 25-cent coin depicting figure skating.

USA coin history:

  • 1981 - Donna Pope is sworn in a Director of the Mint.

Sports history:

  • 1858 - John Holden hits the first recorded home run (Brooklyn versus New York).
  • 1919 - Cleveland Indians' Ray Caldwell no-hits New York Yankees 3-0.
  • 1922 - Largest Polo Grounds baseball crowd; Non Meusel, Babe Ruth, and Lou Gehrig make consecutive home runs.
  • 1927 - France wins its first Davis Cup in tennis.
  • 1937 - Second American Football League plays first game (Los Angeles Bulldogs 21, Pittsburgh Americans 0); Cleveland Rams plays their first NFL game, lose 28-0.
  • 1950 - Joe DiMaggio becomes first to hit three home runs in a game at Griffith Stadium.
  • 1960 - New York Yankees player Mickey Mantle hits 643-foot home run over right field roof in Detroit, Michigan.
  • 1960 - Running barefoot, Ethiopian Abebe Bikila wins Rome Olympic marathon.
  • 1962 - Rod Laver wins the Grand Slam of tennis.
  • 1963 - Philadelphia Phillies beat Houston Colt .45s, 16-0.
  • 1965 - Philadelphia Phillies' 10,000th game to a decision since 1900, Phillies beat Saint Louis Cardinals.
  • 1967 - Chicago White Sox player Joel Horlen no-hits Detroit Tigers, 6-0.
  • 1969 - New York Mets sweep Montreal Expos putting them in first place for first time.
  • 1972 - Emerson Fittipaldi is youngest to win an auto race World Championship.
  • 1972 - US Men's Olympic basketball team's first loss, 51-50 to USSR (disputed).
  • 1973 - Muhammad Ali defeats Ken Norton.
  • 1973 - New York Jets trade pro football's leading receiver Don Maynard to Saint Louis Cardinals.
  • 1974 - Lou Brock ties (104) and then sets (105) baseball stolen base mark.
  • 1974 - Teuvo Louhivouri sets cycling distance record of 515.8 miles in 24 hours.
  • 1977 - Toronto Blue Jays beat New York Yankees 19-3 with 20 hits.
  • 1978 - Arlyne Rhode sets female footbow distance record (1,113 yards and 30 inches).
  • 1978 - 4th game of the Boston Massacre; New York Yankees beat Boston Red Sox 7-4. This ties them for first place. Yankees out-hit Red Sox 67-21; score 42-9.
  • 1980 - Bill Gullickson sets rookie record of striking out 18.
  • 1984 - Sean O'Keefe (11) is youngest to cycle across US (24 days).
  • 1988 - Steffi Graf wins US Open.
  • 1989 - Boris Becker beats Yvan Lendl for the US Open championship.
  • 1990 - Nineteen-year old Pete Sampras beats Andre Agassi to win the US Open of tennis.
  • 1990 - First time in New York Yankees' history they are completely swept in a season series, Oakland Athletics beat them 12 games to 0.
  • 1990 - First time since 1966 that all eight grand slam tennis champions are different.
  • 1990 - Seattle Mariners' Matt Young becomes 21st American League player to strike out four in one inning.
  • 2006 - Seven-time World Champion Michael Schumacher announces he will retire from Formula One racing at the end of the year.
  • 2007 - (to September 30) The 2007 FIFA Women's World Cup is held in China.
  • 2022 - At T-Mobile Park in Seattle, Washington, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Seattle Mariners beats Atlanta Braves by score 3-1.
  • 2022 - At Petco Park in San Diego, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Los Angeles Dodgers beats San Diego Padres by score 8-4.
  • 2022 - At Coors Field in Denver, Colorado, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Colorado Rockies beats Arizona Diamondbacks by score 4-1.
  • 2022 - At PNC Park in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Saint Louis Cardinals beats Pittsburgh Pirates by score 7-5.
  • 2022 - At Target Field in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Cleveland Guardians beats Minnesota Twins by score 6-4.
  • 2022 - At American Family Field in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Milwaukee Brewers beats Cincinnati Reds by score 5-1.
