  • 1981 - Tandy and Datapoint announce an agreement to allow Tandy TRS-80 computers to use network technology from Datapoint, to connect up to 255 Tandy computers to central storage or printers, or to Datapoint computers.
  • 1986 - At the Palladium in Manhattan, New York, Compaq Computer introduces the Compaq Deskpro 386, the first 80386-based personal computer offered by a major computer manufacturer. The Model 40 features a 16 MHz Intel 80386 and 40 MB hard drive, for US$6449. The Model 130 has a 130 MB hard drive, for US$8799.
  • 1992 - Universal Pictures releases the film Sneakers to theaters in the USA.
    • A complete personal computer can be seen in an office.
    • A Multisync monitor displays a Windows VEditor application.
    • A small laptop computer is seen on a desk.

  • 1997 - Apple Computer announces it will not spin off its Newton Systems Group as it had announced in May.
  • 2003 - Microsoft launches Works Suite 2004 software package. It includes Word 2002, Encarta Encyclopedia Standard 2004, Money Standard 2004, Picture It Photo Premium 9, and Streets & Trips 2004. Price is US$100.
  • 2005 - Access of Japan announces it will acquire PalmSource, for US$324.3 million.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1938 - The Mickey Mouse film Mickey's Parrot is released. Pluto also appears.
  • 1941 - Roy Disney agrees to settle the employees' strike via binding arbitration.
  • 1973 - The Carousel of Progress attraction at Disneyland closes.
  • 1979 - The NBC TV network begins airing the TV show Disney's Wonderful World. Former name for the show was The Wonderful World of Disney.
  • 1982 - Group W Satellite Communications and Walt Disney Productions dissolve a joint venture to establish a pay-TV system.
  • 1984 - The Circle-Vision 360 film America the Beautiful closes at Walt Disney World.
  • 1987 - Grenada issues sixty postage stamps depicting scenes from films Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Pinocchio, Alice in Wonderland, and Peter Pan.
  • 1988 - Tokyo Disneyland welcomes its 60-millionth guest.

World War II history:

  • 1939 - Belgian fighter planes attack two British bombers over Belgian territory. One Belgian plane is shot down, both British planes are forced to land. The British government appologizes for the incident.
  • 1939 - German Field Marshal Hermann Göring gives a speech at a German munitions factory: "We will have our Nazism and the Russians their bolshevism, but we are both people who want peace and we are not going to be so silly as to smash each other's heads for Britain.".
  • 1939 - In Utrecht Province of Netherlands, a small basin is flooded, as a defensive precaution.
  • 1939 - 13 British RAF squadrons arrive in France.
  • 1939 - President Jorge Ubico issues a decree proclaiming the neutrality of Guatemala.
  • 1939 - Adolf Hitler issues Directive No. 3 "for the Conduct of the War". Action will continue in Poland until it is safe to transfer forces to the Western border. No air attacks against England, no attacks of any kind against France.
  • 1939 - Slovak troops cease their advance into Poland, after occupying all former territory taken by Poland in 1920, 1928, and 1938.
  • 1939 - French forces complete the capture of a German salient from Saarbruecken to Saarlautern, taking villages of Karlsbrunn, Lauterbach, Ludweiler, Grossrosseln, and Saint Nikolaus.
  • 1939 - German forces capture Lodz, Poland.
  • 1939 - (2220 hours) Canadian Parliament accepts the throne speech, and approves of immediate support to Great Britain and France in the war against Germany. All but one member vote in favor.
  • 1939 - (night) Polish General Tadeusz Kutrzeba leads the Pomorze Army across Bzura River in an attack on the flank of the German 8th Army.
  • 1940 - Britain renews its guarantee against external aggression to Greece.
  • 1941 - In the British House of Commons, Prime Minister Winston Churchill insists that Article 3 of the Atlantic Charter could not apply to the British Empire.
  • 1941 - (2137 hours) Convoy SC-42 across the Atlantic is attacked by German submarines. U-432 torpedoes and sinks SS Muneric. Two more merchant ships are torpedoed before midnight.
  • 1942 - Adolf Hitler dismisses Field Marshal Wilhelm List of Army Group A, taking personal command.
  • 1942 - Japanese submarine I-25 launches a Yokasuka E14Y floatplane off Oregon, bombing the coast.
  • 1942 - The Canadian government closes the Gulf of St. Lawrence to ocean shipping, due to dangers of submarine attacks, and the need of escort ships elsewhere.
  • 1943 - (0230 hours) Italian Admiral Carlo Bergamini takes the remainder of the Italian fleet from La Spezia to deliver to Allies at Malta. Main ships are four battleships, three cruisers, and eight destroyers.
  • 1943 - (after dawn) Italian Admiral Carlo Bergamini with the Italian fleet en route to Malta is joined by three more cruisers, and two more destroyers from Genoa.
  • 1943 - Allied forces launch Operation Avalanche, with amphibious landings of 55,000 troops at Salerno, Italy. US 6th Corps under Ernest Dawley lands on the right, 25 miles south of Salerno. British 10th Corps under Sir Richard McCreery lands on the left, just south of Salerno.
  • 1943 - Allied forces launch Operation Slapstick, as the British 1st Airborne Division lands at Taranto, Italy, seizing the naval base.
  • 1943 - (about 1600 hours) German Dornier Do 217K bombers of the Luftwaffe's III Gruppe of Kampfgeschwader 100 attack the Italian fleet en route to Malta. Guided PC1400X or Fritz X smart bombs are used; once released, the bombs can receive radio signals from a guider on the plane to the target. A bomb hits battleship Italia damaging its steering. A bomb hits the bridge of battleship Roma, killing Bergamini and staff; another bomb pierces the ship and explodes; the ship sinks in 30 minutes, taking oer 1350 crew.
  • 1944 - Bulgaria signs an armistice with the Allies.
  • 1944 - In the Irish Sea, Canadian frigate Dunver, corvette Hespeler, and Canadian aircraft sink German submarine U-484.
  • 1944 - British Vice-Chief of the Imperial Staff sends a message to Field Marshal Montgomery of 21 Army Group in Europe, asking when the coastal Holland area would be taken, due to the launching of rockets on London from the area.
  • 1944 - Soviet and Czechoslovakian forces advance to Dukla Pass close to Slovakia, through the Carpathian Mountains.
  • 1945 - Lucie Rommel issues a statement saying that Erwin Rommel "had no part whatever in the preparations for, or the execution of, the July 20th plot" to kill Adolf Hitler.
  • 1990 - Marshall Islands issues four postage stamps marking the 50th anniversary of American destroyer ships traded for British bases.
  • 1993 - France issues a postage stamp marking the 50th anniversary of liberation of Corsica.

  • 1991 - Nintendo of America reports that the Super NES is now available nationwide in the USA. Price of US$199.95 includes Super Mario World.
  • 1994 - Acclaim Entertainment introduces the Mortal Kombat II arcade video game.
  • 1995 - Sony Electronics introduces the 32-bit CD-ROM game system, PlayStation, in North America. Price is US$299.
  • 1995 - Sony Computer Entertainment America releases the Battle Arena Toshinden video game for the PlayStation in the US. The game innovates in 3D movement in a fighting game.
  • 1995 - Sony Computer Entertainment America releases the ESPN Extreme Games video game for the PlayStation in the US.
  • 1995 - Sony Computer Entertainment America releases the Kileak: The DNA Imperative video game for the PlayStation in the US.
  • 1995 - Acclaim releases the NBA Jam Tournament Edition video game for the PlayStation in the US.
  • 1995 - Ocean releases the Power Serve 3D Tennis video game for the PlayStation in the US.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1870 - The Finance Minister circulates a notice authorizing legally struck copper half penny tokens, and sous as cents, and one penny tokens as two cents, effective October 1. The withdrawal of the 20c piece is also initiated.
  • 1992 - The ninth 25c issue in the Canada 125 Coin Program is unveiled in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Bruce Wood created the design.

USA coin history:

  • 2012 - NASA's Curiousity rover takes its first photograph of the US 1909 1-cent coin it carried to Mars as part of a calibration target.

  • 1895 - The American Bowling Congress forms (New York City).
  • 1904 - Boston Herald again refers to New York baseball club as Yankees, when it reports "Yankees take 2," name not official till 1913.
