Personal computer history:

  • 1994 - Radius acquires the SuperMac company.
  • 1999 - At the Seybold conference in San Francisco, California, Apple Computer unveils the Apple Cinema Display, a 22-inch LCD flat-panel display. Price is US$3999.
  • 1999 - Apple Computer releases the Power Mac G4 computer. It features a 400 MHz PowerPC G4, 64 MB RAM, CD-ROM drive, 10 GB hard disk. Prices start at US$1599.
  • 1999 - Apple Computer iMac computers sold to date: 2 million.
  • 2001 - Intel launches new Celeron processors, at speeds of 950 MHz, 1 GHz, and 1.1GHz. Each features 100 MHz system bus, and 128 kB of level 2 cache. Prices are US$74, US$89, and US$103 respectively.
  • 2004 - Lindows changes its company name to Linspire.
  • 2004 - At the Apple Expo in Paris, France, Apple Computer announces the Apple iMac G5 computer. It features 17- or 20-inch color LCD display, 1.6 or 1.8 GHz PowerPC G5 processor, 256 MB RAM, 512 KB L2 cache, 80 or 160 GB hard drive, DVD-ROM/CD-RW or DVD-R SuperDrive, 64 MB NVidia GeForce 5200 graphics, 10/100 BaseT Ethernet, three USB 2.0 ports, two FireWire 400 ports, AirPort. The 2-inch thick display contains the computer components. Price range is US$1299 to $1899 (919-1349 pounds Sterling).

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1935 - The Mickey Mouse film Pluto's Judgement Day is released to theaters. Pluto also appears.
  • 1938 - Walt and Roy Disney pay a US$10,000 deposit on a US$100,000 51 acre property on Buena Vista Street in Burbank, for a new studio.
  • 1948 - Walt returns to the studio after a 10-day trip visiting the Chicago Railroad Fair and Henry Ford's Greenfield Village collection of buildings. Walt Disney sends a memo to Dick Kelsey, a production designer. He describes an idea for "Mickey Mouse Park", with Main Village, Railroad Station, Carnival Section, Western Village, with various shops and restaurants.
  • 1951 - Disney releases the Goofy film Get Rich Quick to theaters.
  • 1960 - The Bathroom of Tomorrow exhibit at Disneyland closes.
  • 1965 - The U.S. Forest Service announces it has received six bids to develop a ski resort on Mineral King in California. A proposal from Disney is one of two leading candidates. Disney's US$35 million proposal includes up to 27 chair lifts with capacity for 11,400 seats per hour, hotels for up to 3000 guests, and ten-story underground parking for 3600 cars.
  • 1973 - Ward Kimball retires from the Disney company.
  • 1985 - At 5:00 PM, the Walt Disney World Resort closes, due to the advancing Hurricane Elena.
  • 1990 - The 570th and last episode of the show Win, Lose, or Draw is aired in syndication.
  • 1991 - The ABC TV network airs the last episode of the animated series New Kids on the Block.
  • 1992 - The American Journeys file ceases to be shown in Tomorrowland at Tokyo Disneyland.
  • 1993 - Jeffrey Katzenberg officially informs Michael Eisner that he may leave Disney in a year's time.
  • 1994 - Trading in Euro Disney stock is temporarily suspended for 15 minutes on the Paris stock exchange. The stock price had fallen to less than US$2.
  • 1994 - Ron Dominguez retires from Disneyland, after 39 years, working since opening day.
  • 1994 - Disney releases the film Blank Check on laserdisc for US$40.
  • 1998 - The Disney animated TV series Disney's Doug is released to syndication.
  • 2004 - Buena Vista Home Entertainment releases the animated feature film The Lion King 2 - Simba's Pride on videotape and DVD in the USA.
  • 2008 - The Art of Animation display opens in Hong Kong Disneyland.
  • 2009 - The Walt Disney Company agrees to buy Marvel Entertainment for US$4 billion.
  • 2009 - The Walt Disney Company announces enhancements to its Castaway Cay private island in the Bahamas, extending the Castaway Family Beach by more than 700 feet, with a new family lunch buffet location, new beverage bar, new beach rental location, new merchandise location, new 2400 square-foot water feature called Pelican Plunge, new 2400 square-foot water play area on land called Spring-a-Leak, new 1200 square-foot soft wet deck for youngsters, 20 new private beach cabanas, new Hide Out area for teens, new In Da Shade Game Pavilion, and three new massage cabanas at Serenity Bay Beach.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1956 - Harley Earl outlines the program for the XP-64. He directs that three identical vehicles be delivered by December 15.
  • 1960 - Production of 1960 model Corvettes ends.
  • 2000 - At the National Corvette Museum, the Millennium Corvette Celebration is held, over five days.
  • 2002 - At the Virginia International Raceway, round 6 of the Grand-Am Cup series is held.
    • Finishing 3rd in GSI class and 3rd overall is the Powell Motorsport #11 Corvette, driven by Devon Powell and Doug Goad.
    • Finishing 10th in GSI class and 23rd overall is the Powell Motorsport #02 Corvette, driven by Michael Weinberg and Marty Miller.

  • 2003 - In Denver, Colorado, the Motorock Mile High 100 race is held, round nine of the Trans-Am Series for the BFGoodrich Tires Cup.
    • Finishing 4th is the Trenton Forging #2 Corvette, driven by Stuart Hayner.
    • Finishing 5th is the Derhaag Motorsports #59 Corvette, driven by Justin Bell.
    • Finishing 6th is the Revolution Motorsports #10 Corvette, driven by Bobby Sak.
    • Finishing 7th is the Preformed Line Products #49 Corvette, driven by Randy Ruhlman.
    • Finishing 11th is the ROH Wheels #06 Corvette, driven by Joey Scarallo.

World War II history:

  • 1939 - In Cairo, Egypt, forty cases are packed with the sarcophagus of King Tut-ankh-Amen and items found in his tombs, and the cases are hidden in bombproof chambers underground to protect them from possible wartime destruction.
  • 1939 - The Slovak Government calls on Poland to return the Javorina district territory to Slovakia.
  • 1939 - In the Council Hall of the Kremlin in Moscow, Russia, Marshal Klemenly Voroshiloff, Commisar of War, announces the proposed Military Training Law. Conscription age is lowered from 19 to 17, most exemptions to service are abolished, and two reserves are established, including women.
  • 1939 - (1730 hours) Adolf Hitler issues Directive No. 1 to senior commanders, "for the Conduct of the War". His orders include: attack Poland on September 1; respect neutrality of Holland, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Switzerland; Western forces are not to be attacked until fired upon.
  • 1939 - In England, full army and navy mobilization is commenced, censorship of all communications to and from the British Isles is imposed, the Stock Exchange is closed, and civil airplanes are banned from flying over half of Britain.
  • 1939 - (1945 German time) In Berlin, Germany, the German Foreign Minister sees Polish ambassador Lipski, but refuses to list peace terms as the ambassador had no authority to accept or reject them.
  • 1939 - German radio makes public a proposed 16-point peace plan the government had proposed for Poland, claiming Poland refused to accept the terms. The proposal deals with annexing Danzig, maintaining a corridor from Germany to East Prussia, and the treatment of minorities in Germany and Poland.
  • 1939 - (evening) In Moscow, Russia, the Soviet Parliament unanimously ratifies the Russo-German non-aggression pact.
  • 1941 - British Prime Minister Winston Churchill informs Australia of the intention to build a Far East fleet of capital ships by the end of the year, based within the triangle Aden - Singapore - Simonstown.
  • 1942 - American carrier Saratoga is torpedoed, putting it out of action for three months.
  • 1943 - Aircraft of US Task Force 15.5 (carriers Yorktown, Essex, Independence) attack Marcus Island in the North Pacific, the first of a series of minor raids prior to major invasions of Makin and Tarawa in the Gilbert Islands.
  • 1943 - (evening) 613 British heavy bombers are sent against Berlin, Germany. 86 turn back early, and 47 are shot down. Little damage to the city is done.
  • 1944 - (early) In France, British 30th Corps reaches Amiens, breaching the Somme line.
  • 1944 - Parts of the US 3rd Army cross the Meuse River at Verdun.
  • 1944 - British intelligence finally discovers the location of German rocket manufacture: Nordhausen.
  • 1944 - Colonel Eberhard Finckh is hanged for his part in the coup attempt.
  • 1944 - Canada ceases production of anthrax for Britain at Grosse Ile, Quebec. The American operation takes over production at their plant for Britain.
  • 1944 - (by night) In Italy, Canadian 2nd Infantry Brigade breaks through the Gothic Line, and approaches Pozzo Alto.
  • 1945 - American General Douglas MacArthur signs the document listing the terms of Japan's surrender, on the American battleship Missouri, in Tokyo Bay.
  • 1946 - At the Nuremberg Tribunal, defendants make closing statements before the court. Hermann Göring denies all. Joachim von Ribbentrop hopes America and Great Britain are more successful versus Bolshevism. Wilhelm Keitel says his loyalty was exploited for obscure reasons. Albert Speer predicts destruction if technology developments of previous five years exploited in another war.

Video game history:

  • 1992 - Midway Amusement Games releases the Mortal Kombat video game Version 3.0 to arcades in the US.
  • 1997 - Acclaim Entertainment releases the Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero video game for the PlayStation in the US.
  • 1998 - Activision releases the Tenchu: Stealth Assassins video game for the PlayStation in the US.
  • 1999 - Year to date sales of the Game Boy and Game Boy Color in the USA: 2.68 million.
  • 1999 - Atari Games releases the Gauntlet Legends video game for the Nintendo 64.
  • 2000 - Capcom releases the Resident Evil Survivor video game for the PlayStation in the US.
  • 2000 - Sega drops the price of the Dreamcast in the US from US$199 to US$149.
  • 2004 - Namco releases the Street Racing Syndicate video game for the PlayStation 2, Xbox, and GameCube in the US.
  • 2006 - Total sales to date of the Xbox 360 in the USA: 2.4 million.
  • 2007 - Total unit sales of video game systems in the USA to date: PlayStation 2 39.1 million, Nintendo DS 12.7 million, PlayStation Portable 8.3 million, Xbox 360 6.3 million, Wii 4 million, PlayStation 3 1.75 million.
  • 2010 - Nintendo releases the Metroid: Other M video game for the Nintendo Wii in the US.
  • 2010 - Sega releases the Valkyria Chronicles II video game for the PlayStation Portable in the US.
  • 2017 - Square Enix releases the Life is Strange: Before the Storm video game for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in the USA.

Swedish history:

  • 1905 - Negotiations open at Karlstad between Norway and Sweden. Swedes demand the destruction of frontier fortifications and setting up a neutral zone on both sides of the border. A compromise allows Kongsvinger with no further development, and Halden can keep its ancient fortifications.
  • 1939 - A new bridge in Västernorrland, Ångermanland, crossing the Ångerman River linking Lunde and Sandoe collapses as workers complete the structure, killing 32 workers.
  • 2017 - Birth of Prince Gabriel, Duke of Dalarna, to Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia of Sweden.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1942 - A Proclamation sets the design and dimensions for the Tombac 5c coin.
  • 1962 - The competition for designing the 1964 $1 coin closes.

Sports history:

  • 1881 - First US tennis championships (Newport, Rhode Island).
  • 1894 - Philadelphia Phillies' Billy Hamilton steals 7 bases.
  • 1895 - First pro football game (quarterback John Brallier is paid $10 and won 12-0).
  • 1900 - Brooklyn Dodgers' pitcher Brickyard Kennedy walks six straight Philadelphia Phillies' players.
  • 1915 - Chicago White Sox pitcher Jimmy Lavender no-hits New York Giants, 2-0.
  • 1934 - First football all star game-Chicago Bears tie collegians 0-0 in Chicago.
  • 1935 - First national skeet championship (Indianapolis, Indiana, USA).
  • 1935 - Chicago White Sox player Vern Kennedy no-hits Cleveland Indians, 5-0.
  • 1950 - Brooklyn Dodgers' Gil Hodges hits four home runs and a single in a game versus Boston Braves.
  • 1959 - Australia defeats US for tennis' Davis Cup.
  • 1970 - US defeats German Federal Republic for tennis' Davis Cup.
  • 1972 - Olga Korbut, USSR, wins Olympic gold medal in gymnastics.
  • 1983 - Edwin Moses of USA sets the 400m hurdle record (47.02) in Koblenz.
  • 1984 - Pinklin Thomas defeats Tim Witherspoon for the WBC heavyweight title.
  • 1985 - Prakas sets trotting mile record of 1:53.4 at Du Quoin, Illinois.
  • 1987 - Curtis Strange sets golf's earning for the year record (US$697,385).
  • 1996 - The Big 12 Conference is inaugurated with a football game between Kansas State University and Texas Tech University in Manhattan, Kansas.
  • 2022 - At Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Philadelphia Phillies beats Arizona Diamondbacks by score 18-2.
  • 2022 - At Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Los Angeles Angels beats New York Yankees by score 3-2.
  • 2022 - At Guaranteed Rate Field in Chicago, Illinois, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Chicago White Sox beats Kansas City Royals by score 4-2.
  • 2022 - At Target Field in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Boston Red Sox beats Minnesota Twins by score 6-5.

  • 1778 - British kill 17 Stockbridge Indians in the Bronx during Revolution.
  • 1798 - $162,821 is stolen at night from vaults of the Bank of Pennsylvania, the first bank robbery in the USA.
  • 1842 - US Naval Observatory authorized by an act of Congress.
  • 1864 - The Democratic Party nominates General George B. McLellan for US President.
  • 1864 - Atlanta Campaign - Battle of Jonesborough.
  • 1886 - First major earthquake (7.3) recorded in eastern US, at Charleston, South Carolina.
  • 1920 - The first news radio program is broadcast in Detroit, Michigan.
  • 1935 - US President Franklin Roosevelt signs an act prohibiting export of US arms to belligerents.
  • 1954 - US Census Bureau is established.
  • 1954 - Hurricane Carol (first major named storm) hits New England, 70 die.
  • 1955 - First microwave TV station operated (Lufkin, Texas, USA).
  • 1955 - First sun-powered automobile demonstrated, Chicago, Illinois, USA.

  • 1978 - Symbionese Liberation Army founders William and Emily Harris plead guilty to 1974 kidnapping of newspaper heiress Patricia Hearst.
  • 1981 - A bomb explodes at the U.S. Air Force base in Ramstein, West Germany, injuring 20 people.
  • 1985 - Night Stalker suspect that terrorized South California captured in East Los Angeles.
  • 1986 - Aeroméxico Flight 498, a Douglas DC-9, collides with a Piper PA-28 over Cerritos, California, killing 67 on both aircraft and 15 on the ground.
  • 1986 - The cargo ship Khian Sea departs from the docks of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, carrying 14,000 tons of toxic waste.
  • 1988 - Five-day power blackout of downtown Seattle, Washington, USA begins.
  • 1991 - In Noblesville, Indiana, USA a meteorite falls harmlessly to the ground.
  • 2009 - Florida governor Charlie Crist signs a gambling pact with the Seminole tribe, lasting 20 years, specifying payment of minimum US$12.5 million per month for the first 30 months for the privilege of running legal slot machines and blackjack at their seven casinos.
