Personal computer history:

  • 1999 - Advanced Micro Devices releases the 500 MHz K6-2 processor. Price is US$167 in 1000-unit quantities.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1940 - The Pluto film Pluto's Dream House is released to theaters. Mickey Mouse also appears.
  • 1946 - Disney releases the Donald Duck film Dumb Bell of the Yukon to theaters.
  • 1991 - The last episode of the TV series The Challengers airs.
  • 2001 - The Disney Cruise Line celebrates its one millionth guest family.
  • 2005 - Buena Vista Home Video releases the film Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch on videocassette and DVD in the USA.
  • 2014 - The American Idol Experience closes at Disney's Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1957 - The Corvette SS is on show at the Michigan State Fair, over ten days.
  • 1965 - A.O. Smith completes the first Corvette body for the 1966 model Corvette.
  • 1989 - Production of the 1990 ZR-1 begins, at Bowling Green, Kentucky.
  • 1994 - The National Corvette Museum Annex closes.
  • 2001 - The National Corvette Museum hosts its 7th Annual Corvette Celebration, over five days. The four CERV test cars are on display.
  • 2002 - At the National Corvette Museum, the Hall of Fame Inductions ceremony is held. Inductees for 2002 are: John A. Cafaro. James Jeffords, Myron E. Scott. Cafaro was the chief designer of the C5 Corvette. Jeffords was two-time SCCA B-Production Class winner in late 1950s. Scott suggested the name "Corvette" in 1952.

World War II history:

  • 1939 - Japanese forces at Nomonhan are virtually destroyed.
  • 1939 - Poland officially announces military mobilization.
  • 1940 - Romania cedes part of Transylvania to Hungary, in exchange for German and Italian guarantees of the integrity of the rest of Romania.
  • 1940 - Adolf Hitler withdraws his ban on bombing London, and encourages Hermann Göring to proceed.
  • 1941 - (morning) Convoy SC-42 of 62 merchant ships leaves Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada, headed for England. Five more ships join the convoy near St. John's, Newfoundland. The slow-moving convoy is escorted initially by only four Canadian warships: destroyer Skeena, and corvettes Orillia, Alberni, and Kenogami.
  • 1942 - German Field Marshal Erwin Rommel launches another offensive against El Alamein, but has to withdraw.
  • 1942 - German submarine U564 sinks Norwegian merchant ship Vardaas.
  • 1944 - In Italy, Canadian forces cross the Foglia River, and pierce the Gothic Line of German defences.
  • 1944 - Former Paris Military Governor Colonel-General Karl Heinrich von Stülpnagel is hanged.
  • 1944 - Colonel Hans Otfreid von Linstow is executed.
  • 1944 - In France, Canadian forces enter Rouen.
  • 1944 - Russian forces capture Ploesti, Romania.
  • 1944 - Canadian General Harry Crerar directs the 2nd Canadian Corps to take Dieppe, France.
  • 1967 - Papua & New Guinea issues four postage stamps marking the 25th anniversary of battles in the Pacific which stopped Japanese occupation of the area.

Video game history:

  • 1995 - Nintendo releases the Killer Instinct video game for the Super NES in the USA.
  • 2000 - Activision releases the Tenchu 2: Birth of the Stealth Assassins video game for the PlayStation in the US.
  • 2004 - Acclaim Entertainment files for Chapter 7 final bankuptcy, with debt over US$100 million.
  • 2004 - Nintendo releases the Pikmin 2 video game for the GameCube in the US.
  • 2005 - Nintendo releases the Mario Superstar Baseball video game for the GameCube in the US.
  • 2005 - Namco releases the Namco Museum: 50th Anniversary Arcade Collection for the PlayStation 2, Xbox, and GameCube in the US. Included games are Ms. Pac-Man, Xevious, Galaga, Sky Kid, and Bosconian.
  • 2011 - Ubisoft releases the Driver: Renegade video game for the Nintendo 3DS in the US.
  • 2011 - Majesco releases the BloodRayne: Betrayed video game for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in the US.
  • 2011 - EA Sports releases the Madden NFL 12 video game for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in the US.

Swedish history:

  • 1721 - The Treaty of Nystadt ends the war between Sweden and Russia. Sweden loses Livonia, Estonia, Ingria, and East Karelia incluing Viborg. Russia returns Finland, and pays 2 million riksdaler. Russia agrees not to interfere in Swedish internal affairs or royal succession.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1851 - The Canadian Currency Act passes in Canadian parliament, specifying a conversion to decimal currency as soon as is convenient, and making the dollar legal tender, up to $10 per transaction. The wording of the Act specifies that any new coins struck for Canada would be done so under the approval of the British Government.

USA coin history:

  • 2011 - The US Mint launches the 2011 Vicksburg National Military Park quarter dollar in Vicksburg, Mississippi.

Sports history:

  • 1906 - Hal Chase becomes first New York Yankees' player to hit three triples in a game.
  • 1910 - New York Yankees' Tom Hughes pitches 9 no-hit innings but loses to Cleveland Naps 5-0 in 11 innings.
  • 1912 - Saint Louis Browns' pitcher Earl Hamilton no-hits Detroit Tigers, 5-1.
  • 1913 - Philadelphia Phillies lead New York Giants 8-6 in top of 9th, fans in bleachers try to distract Giants, umpire forefeits game to Giants, later overruled.
  • 1916 - Boston Red Sox' Dutch Leonard no-hits Saint Louis Browns, 4-0.
  • 1939 - New York Yankees' Atley Donald pitches a baseball a record 94.7 mph (152 kph).
  • 1941 - Saint Louis Cardinals' pitcher Lon Warneke no-hits Cincinnati Reds, 2-0.
  • 1961 - Baltimore Orioles' player Jack Fisher walks 12 Los Angeles Angels' players in a 9-inning game.
  • 1965 - Casey Stengel announces his retirement after 55 years in baseball.
  • 1984 - Jim Rice of the Boston Red Sox makes his 33rd double play of the season establishing a new major league mark.
  • 1987 - Ben Johnson of Canada runs 100m in world record 9.83 seconds.
  • 1987 - Stefka Kostadinova of Bulgaria sets high jump women's record (6 feet 10.25 inches).
  • 1987 - Yves Pol of France runs complete marathon backwards (3:57:57).
  • 1990 - Ken Griffey and Ken Griffey Junior become first father and son to play on the same baseball team (Seattle Mariners).
  • 1991 - Dan O'Brien sets US decathalon record with 8,812 points.
  • 1991 - USA beats European Union by narrowest Ryder Cup margin: 14.5 to 13.5.
  • 1991 - Mike Powell of the US sets long jump record at 29 feet 4.5 inches.
  • 1992 - Michael Schumacher wins his first Grand Prix car race in Belgium at Spa-Francorchamps in a Benetton-Ford race car.
  • 2002 - Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig announces the players union and owners have reached a settlement on a new four-year agreement, avoiding a strike.
  • 2009 - In Spa, Belgium, round 12 of the FIA Formula 1 World Championship is won by Kimi Räikkönen.
  • 2009 - In Indianapolis, USA, round 12 of the FIM MotoGP Championship is won by Jorge Lorenzo.
  • 2022 - At Oracle Park in San Francisco, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: San Diego Padres beats San Francisco Giants by score 4-3.
  • 2022 - At Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Arizona Diamondbacks beats Philadelphia Phillies by score 12-3.
  • 2022 - At Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: New York Yankees beats Los Angeles Angels by score 7-4.
  • 2022 - At American Family Field in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Pittsburgh Pirates beats Milwaukee Brewers by score 4-2.
  • 2022 - At Guaranteed Rate Field in Chicago, Illinois, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Kansas City Royals beats Chicago White Sox by score 9-7.
  • 2022 - At Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Houston Astros beats Texas Rangers by score 4-2.
  • 2022 - At Target Field in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Minnesota Twins beats Boston Red Sox by score 10-5.
  • 2022 - At Truist Park in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Colorado Rockies beats Atlanta Braves by score 3-2.

Space exploration history:

  • 1885 - 13,000 meteors seen in one hour near Andromeda.
  • 1979 - First recorded occurrence - comet Howard-Koomur-Michels hits sun (energy equals 1 million hydrogen bombs).
  • 1983 - STS-8: Space Shuttle Challenger launched into space.
  • 1984 - 12th Space Shuttle Mission (41-D) - Discovery 1 - launched (6 days).

USA history:

  • 1848 - Lieutenant Lucian K. Loeser departs California with a strongbox of 230 ounces of gold to show the Secretary of War in Washington DC.
  • 1861 - John Frémont, commander of the Western Department, issues proclamation freeing slaves of Missouri rebels.
  • 1862 - Battle of Altamont - Confederates beat USA forces in Tennessee.
  • 1862 - Second Battle of Manassas: US General John Pope defeated by CSA General Robert Lee; 13,824 casualties.
  • 1890 - Antietam is established as a national battlefield in Maryland.
  • 1963 - Hot Line communications link between Washington DC and Moscow begins.
  • 1967 - US Senate confirms Thurgood Marshall as US Supreme Court justice.
  • 1969 - 120,000 attend Texas International Pop Festival.
  • 1969 - 25,000 attend second Annual Sky River Rock Festival, Tenino, Washington.
  • 1969 - Racial disturbances in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
  • 1979 - US President Jimmy Carter attacked by a rabbit on a canoe trip in Plains, Georgia.
  • 1983 - STS-8: Space Shuttle Challenger launched into space.
  • 1984 - 12th Space Shuttle Mission (41-D) - Discovery 1 - launched (6 days).
  • 2004 - (to September 2) U.S. President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney are re-nominated at the Republican National Convention in New York City.
  • 2007 - United States Air Force nuclear weapons incident in which a B-52 flies from Minot Air Force Base, North Dakota to Barksdale Air Force Base, Lousiana carrying six nuclear warheads.
  • 2021 - The United States withdraws its last remaining troops from Hamid Karzai International Airport, Kabul, ending 20 years of operations in Afghanistan.
