Personal computer history:

  • 1991 - Apple Computer and Adobe Systems sign a letter of intent for Apple to include Adobe's font technology in future System 7 operating system.
  • 1993 - The Federal Trade Commission decides by a vote of 4-0 to cease investigating Microsoft for unfair trade practices. The US Department of Justice notifies Microsoft it is proceeding with its own antitrust investigation, focussing on DOS marketing practices. The European Commission also begins its own independent investigation.
  • 1998 - Activision releases the Quake III Arena game for Windows-based personal computers.
  • 2001 - Hewlett-Packard announces the DVD100i DVD writer. The drive is to be released in September, priced at US$599. This is the first DVD+RW drive available for personal computers.
  • 2001 - Advanced Micro Devices announces the 1.1 GHz Athlon 4 processor for portable computers. It features 200 MHz system bus, PowerNow technology, Streaming SIMD Extensions. Price is US$425.
  • 2001 - Advanced Micro Devices announces the 900 MHz Duron processor for portable computers. It features 200 MHz system bus, PowerNow technology, Streaming SIMD Extensions. Price is US$130.
  • 2001 - Apple Computer begins shipping a Power Mac G4 computer with dual 800 MHz PowerPC G4 processors, CD-RW/DVD-R SuperDrive, 256 MB RAM, and 80 GB hard drive. Price is US$3499.
  • 2002 - Advanced Micro Devices releases the 2 GHz Athlon XP 2400+ processor. Price is US$193 each in quantities of 1000.
  • 2002 - Advanced Micro Devices releases the 2.133 GHz Athlon XP 2600+ processor. Price is US$297 each in quantities of 1000.
  • 2007 - Advanced Micro Devices releases the Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core 6400+ processor, US$251 in quantities of 1000.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1927 - Disney ships the Oswald the Lucky Rabbit film The Banker's Daughter to Winkler Productions.
  • 1928 - Universal Pictures releases the 26th Oswald the Lucky Rabbit film, Hot Dog, to theaters. This is the last Oswald film that the Walt Disney Studio contributed to.
  • 1932 - The Mickey Mouse film Trader Mickey is released to theaters. Pluto also appears.
  • 1981 - Walt Disney Productions raises US$100 million with the issue of a 5-year Eurobond, the first public debt for the company.
  • 1990 - The NBC TV network airs a preview of the series Hull High.
  • 1996 - Touchstone Home Video releases the film Mr. Wrong on videocassette.
  • 2004 - (to August 21) The Hollywood Bowl Orchestra plays music from Disney films. The Great American Concert with Fireworks - Walt Disney: 75 Years of Music.
  • 2015 - The ABC TV network airs the last The Astronaut Wives TV show.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1954 - At a NASCAR-sanctioned sports car race at Raleigh Speedway, Chevrolet races a stock-engined 1953 Corvette.
  • 1958 - Production of the 1958 model ends. Sales of the model reach 9168, enough to turn a profit for the Corvette for the first time.
  • 1977 - At the Mosport Park raceway, in Mosport, Ontario, Canada, the Molson Diamond Trans-Am Championship - Round 8, and the World Championship of Makes six-hour race is held.
    • Finishing 3rd in Trans-Am I class and 10th overall is the Brandt Moving & Storage #60 Corvette 350, driven by John Brandt Jr. and Michael Oleyar.
    • Finishing 4th in Trans-Am I class and 12th overall is the Rynone Industries #90 Corvette, driven by Tom Rynone, Michael Wiernicki, and Neil Wiernicki.
    • In 6th place in Trans-Am I class and 17th overall, but not finishing the race, is the Nagel Racing #80 Corvette 427, driven by Nick Engels and Bob Nagel.
    • In 7th place in Trans-Am I class and 21st overall, but not finishing the race, is the Motion Marketing #45 Corvette 355, driven by Jim Mancuso.
    • In 8th place in Trans-Am I class and 23rd overall, but not finishing the race, is the #5 Corvette, driven by Bill Adam.

  • 2000 - In Ste. Croix, Quebec, the Speedvision World Challenge, Round 5, is held. Bill Cooper takes 2nd place in a C5 Corvette. John Heinricy places 3rd, also racing a C5.
  • 2005 - The United States Postal Service releases the "America on the Move: '50s Sporty Cars" five-panel series of postage stamps. One stamp depicts the 1953 Corvette, modelled after Noland Adams' car.
  • 2005 - A 1953 model Corvette is made honorary mail-delivery vehicle in Detroit, Michigan, to publicize the USPS release of a postage stamp depicting a Corvette.
  • 2006 - At the Road America raceway in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, the Generac 500 at Road America race is held, round seven of the SCCA SPEED World Challenge GT series.
    • Finishing 3rd is the Banner Engineering #6 Corvette C6 driven by Leighton Reese.
    • Finishing 11th is the Blackdog Racing #34 Corvette C6 driven by Tony Gaples.
    • Finishing 14th is the LG ProLong Tube Headers #28 Corvette C6 driven by Lou Gigliotti.
    • Finishing 16th is the Foametix #26 Corvette C6 driven by Claudio Burtin.
    • Finishing 17th is the LG Motorsports #87 Corvette C6 driven by Doug Peterson.
    • Finishing 22nd is the MAECO Motorsport #40 Corvette C6 driven by Greg Weirick.
    • Finishing 23rd is the Flyng Tiger Racing #47 Corvette Z06 driven by Bob Taylor.
    • Finishing 25th is the Whelen Engineering #31 Corvette C6 driven by Sonny Whelen.
    • Finishing 30th is the Carriage Haus Parking #9 Corvette Z06 driven by Adam Malmquist.
    • Finishing 33rd is the Diamond Construction #25 Corvette C6 driven by Brian Kubinski.

  • 2006 - At the Road America raceway in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, the Generac 500 at Road America race is held, round seven of the American Le Mans Series.
    • Finishing 1st in GT1 class is the Corvette Racing #3 Corvette C6-R driven by Ron Fellows and Johnny O'Connell.
    • Finishing 2nd in GT1 class is the Corvette Racing #4 Corvette C6-R driven by Oliver Gavin and Olivier Beretta.

World War II history:

  • 1939 - Soviet forces under Lieutenant General Georgi Zhukov counterattack Japanese invaders at Nomanhan in the Mongolian People's Republic (Outer Mongolia) on the border with Manchukuo.
  • 1940 - British Prime Minister Winston Churchill announces an agreement to lease bases to the United States in exchange for fifty American destroyers.
  • 1941 - The Spanish Blue Division (Wehrmacht 250th Infantry Division) is sent from Germany to Poland.
  • 1944 - In the English Channel, Canadian destroyers Ottawa, Kootenay, and Chaudiere sink German submarine U-984.
  • 1944 - The Soviet 2nd Ukrainian Front launches an attack on German Army Group South Ukrain.
  • 1945 - Soviet forces complete their conquest of Manchuria.
  • 1974 - Romania issues two postage stamps marking the 30th anniversary of liberation.
  • 1979 - Romania issues two postage stamps marking the 35th anniversary of liberation.
  • 1991 - Estonia declares indepence from the Soviet Union.
  • 1991 - Latvia declares indepence from the Soviet Union.

Video game history:

  • 2008 - At a video games convention in Leipzig, Germany, Sony announces a new version of its PlayStation Portable handheld video game system, to go on sale in Europe and the United States in mid-October. The PlayStation Portable 3000 will have a built-in microphone and a new screen which has more colors and is better suited for use outdoors.

Swedish history:

  • 1781 - 200 families leave Dagö island (near Estonia), moving to the Ukraine. The families first moved to the island in about 1230.
  • 1914 - Britain restricts trade with Sweden.
  • 1959 - In Stockholm harbor, the sunken warship Vasa is lifted from the clay by two large pontoons and cables under ths ship. The twelve steel cables used are 390 feet long, each with a diameter of two inches. Over 27 days, the ship is slowly towed from 110-foot depth to 50-foot depth.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1966 - Krause Publications releases the first issue of Coin, Stamp, Antique News newspaper, formerly called Canada Coin News.

USA coin history:

  • 2009 - The US Mint releases the 2009 James Polk Presidential dollar to circulation.

Sports history:

  • 1912 - Washington Senators' pitcher Carl Cushion no-hits Cleveland Naps, 2-0 in six innings.
  • 1920 - Allen Woodring wins Oympic 200m dash wearing borrowed shoes.
  • 1920 - Preliminary meeting in Akron to form American Pro Football Association.
  • 1945 - Brooklyn Dodgers' Tommy Brown becomes youngest home run hitter (age 17).
  • 1949 - 78,382 watch the Chicago White Sox play the Cleveland Indians at Cleveland, Ohio.
  • 1957 - Chicago White Sox' Bob Keegan no-hits Washington Senators 6-0.
  • 1958 - Dale Long becomes first major league lefty catcher in 52 years.
  • 1958 - Detroit Tigers' Jim Bunning no-hits Boston Red Sox, 3-0.
  • 1961 - Philadelphia Phillies set dubious record of 23 straight losses.
  • 1974 - Nolan Ryan pitch measured at record 161.6 kph (100.4 mph).
  • 1980 - New York Yankees' Bob Watson hits Seattle Kingdome speaker, second straight day.
  • 1982 - Don Lever becomes the first captain of the New Jersey Devils.
  • 1985 - First National League pitcher to strike out 200+ in first two seasons (Dwight Goodin).
  • 1988 - Yordanka Donkova of Bulgaria sets 100m hurdle woman's record (12.21).
  • 1990 - George Steinbrenner steps down as New York Yankees owner.
  • 1990 - New York Yankees' player Kevin Mass is quickest to reach 15 home runs (approx 132 at bat).
  • 2008 - Jamaica's Usain Bolt wins the 200m sprint at the Beijing Olympic Games in new world record time of 19.30 seconds.
  • 2009 - At the Athletics World Championships in Berlin, Germany, Usain Bolt of Jamaica sets a new world record in the 200m dash with a time of 19.19 seconds.
  • 2022 - At SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, USA, National Football League pre-season game: Dallas Cowboys beats Los Angeles Chargers by score 32-18.
  • 2022 - At TIAA Bank Field in Jacksonville, Florida, USA, National Football League pre-season game: Pittsburgh Steelers beats Jacksonville Jaguars by score 16-15.
  • 2022 - At U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, National Football League pre-season game: San Francisco 49ers beats Minnesota Vikings by score 17-7.
  • 2022 - At Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, USA, National Football League pre-season game: Las Vegas Raiders beats Miami Dolphins by score 15-13.
  • 2022 - At Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee, USA, National Football League pre-season game: Tennessee Titans beats Tampa Bay Buccaneers by score 13-3.

  • 1994 - In Honolulu, Hawaii, during a circus international performance at the Neal Blaisdell Arena, a female elephant named Tyke crushes her trainer Allen Campbell to death before hundreds of horrified spectators.
  • 1998 - The United States military launches cruise missile attacks against alleged Al-Qaeda camps in Afghanistan and a suspected chemical plant in Sudan in retaliation for the August 7 bombings of American embassies in Kenya and Tanzania. The al-Shifa pharmaceutical factory in Khartoum is destroyed in the attack.
  • 2007 - NASDAQ announces its intention to sell its 31 percent stake in the London Stock Exchange.
