Personal computer history:

  • 1996 - Netscape Communications releases Netscape Navigator 3.0.
  • 1997 - Advanced Micro Devices announces it has ceased manufacturing the K5 processor.
  • 1999 - Apple Computer files a complaint against eMachines for copying the look of the iMac with the eOne computers.
  • 2002 - Sony releases the Clie PEG-SJ20 handheld computer. It features 16 MB RAM, rechargeable lithium-ion battery, backlit monochrome 320x320 pixel screen, Palm OS 4.1, and Memory Stick slot. Price is US$199.
  • 2011 - Hewlett-Packard stock shares crash 20 percent, $12 billion of market value, the day after announcement of plan to spin off personal computer business and buy British software maker Autonomy for $10.3 billion.
  • 2020 - Apple becomes the first American company with a valuation of US$2 trillion.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1926 - Disney ships the 39th Alice Comedy film, Alice the Lumber Jack, to M.J. Winkler Productions.
  • 1931 - Disney completes the Silly Symphony film Egyptian Melodies.
  • 1933 - The Silly Symphony film Lullaby Land is released to theaters.
  • 1938 - The Mickey Mouse film The Whalers is released to theaters. Donald Duck and Goofy also appear.
  • 1955 - Disney releases the Donald Duck film Bearly Asleep to theaters. Humphrey Bear also appears.
  • 1984 - Michael Eisner meets with Frank Wells and Stanley Gold. Gold explains that they want the Disney board of directors to consider Wells and Eisner for the top jobs.
  • 1989 - Disney releases the TV show Ernest Goes to Splash Mountain to syndication.
  • 1991 - The NBC TV network airs the last episode of Carol & Co..
  • 1994 - Buena Vista Pictures releases the Hollywood Pictures / Cinergi Pictures live-action feature film Color of Night to theaters.
  • 1998 - Comedy Central airs the South Park TV show in the USA. When the sewers flood the streets, the music from Fantasia begins to play, monsters dance like the creatures in Fantasia. Mr. Hankey wears the blue cap (with stars) and red robe that Sorcerer Mickey wears in the film, as he "conducts" the sewage.
  • 2005 - Disney releases the animated feature film Valiant to theaters in the USA.
  • 2008 - Disney releases the Hannah Montana / Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour on DVD in Canada.
  • 2011 - (to September 21) In Anaheim, California, the D23 Disney Expo convention is held at the Anaheim Convention Center. The US Postal Service holds a first-day ceremony for the Pixar Films: Send a Hello postage stamps. The five different Forever-denominated stamps show characters from films Cars, Ratatouille, Toy Story, Up, and WALL-E.
  • 2011 - The US Postal Service issues five "forever"-value first-class postage stamps depicting characters from Pixar films: Cars, Ratatouille, Toy Story, Up, Wall-E.

  • 1973 - At the Edmonton International Speedway, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, the Edmonton Trans-Am race is held, part of the SCCA Trans-American Championship series.
    • Finishing 1st is the Greenwood Racing #48 Corvette, driven by John Greenwood.
    • Finishing 3rd is the Abex - Jim Robbins Co. Corvette, driven by Jerry Thompson and J. Marshall Robbins.

  • 2006 - The 12th annual Woodward Dream Cruise is held on the highway north of Detroit, Michigan. Attendance is about one million, with about 40,000 cars, about 2000 Corvettes.
  • 2018 - At the Virginia International Raceway in Alton, Virginia, USA, the Michelin GT Challenge at VIR race is held, round 10 of the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship series.
    • Finishing 2nd in GT Le Mans class and 2nd overall is the Corvette Racing #3 Corvette C7.R driven by Jan Magnussen and Antonio Garcia.
    • Finishing 6th in GT Le Mans class and 6th overall is the Corvette Racing #4 Corvette C7.R driven by Tommy Milner and Oliver Gavin.

World War II history:

  • 1939 - Germany and the Soviet Union sign a trade treaty.
  • 1942 - (0345-0348 hours) A convoy of British 3 Commando in Operation Jubilee crossing the English Channel encounters a German convoy along the French coast. The out-gunned Germans are driven off, but the surprise operation is now compromised. Some British ships are sunk, reducing the landing force east of Dieppe. The sea fight alerts coastal defences at Berneval and Puys, France.
  • 1942 - The Allies launch a major raid on the French port of Dieppe. 5000 of the 6000 troops are part of the Canadian 2nd Division. Original code name of the operation is Rutter, but was changed to a different plan code-named Jubilee. Primary objectives are to see if it is possible to seize and hold a major continental port, obtain intelligence from prisoners, documents, and equipment (German code and cipher books and an Enigma coding machine), and to see the German reaction to a major attack on the French coast. Secondary objectives are to draw the Luftwaffe into battle, show the USSR that Britain is seriously trying to help distract the Germans, and to give Canadian forces in Britain something to do.
  • 1942 - (0450 hours) British 4 Commando lands at Vesterival, France, with objective to destroy the guns in the Hess battery near Varengeville.
  • 1942 - (0506 hours) The Royal Regiment of Canada lands on the beach at Puys, France, near Dieppe, to fully-alerted German soldiers' machine-gun fire.
  • 1942 - (0510 hours) British 3 Commando climbs the cliff at Belleville, left flank of the Dieppe assault, and soon knock out the Goebbels artillery battery inland at Berneval.
  • 1942 - (0520 hours) South Saskatchewan Regiment and Cameron Highlanders of Canada land at Pourville, France. One group meets heavy resistance as it crosses the River Scie, and is stopped short of Dieppe. The main force of Camerons advance about two miles toward an airfield before they are stopped.
  • 1942 - (0535 hours) The 27 of 29 Churchill tanks of the 14th Canadian Tank (Calgary) Regiment land on the main beach at Dieppe. Twelve are stopped by enemy gunfire, shingle banks, and the sea wall. The fifteen that get past the sea wall are blocked by concrete obstacles in the narrow streets.
  • 1942 - (1/2 hour after dawn) The Essex Scottish Regiment lands on the eastern section of the beach at Dieppe. Despite intense enemy machine-gun fire, one small group makes its way into town, and signals the headquarters ship.
  • 1942 - (1/2 hour after dawn) The Canadian Royal Hamilton Light Infantry lands at the west section of the beach at Dieppe. They clear a large strongly-held casino and several pillboxes. Some men make it into town, and engage in intense fighting.
  • 1942 - (0640 hours) British 4 Commando destroys the guns in the Hess battery near Varengeville.
  • 1942 - (about 0700 hours) Canadian 2nd Division commander General Roberts orders reserves of Fusiliers Mont-Royal and British 40 Commando Royal Marines to land in center beaches at Dieppe.
  • 1942 - (0740 hours) The Royal Regiment of Canada, just east of Dieppe, makes a second attack to break out of their beach position, making a small penetration into the town.
  • 1942 - (after dawn) Three platoons of reinforcements from the BlackWatch (Royal Highland Regiment) of Canada join the Royal Regiment of Canada on the beach at Puys, but are also pinned on the beach, and later forced to surrender.
  • 1942 - (0817 hours) Canadian 2nd Division commander General Roberts orders British 40 Commando Royal Marines land on the western edge of Dieppe.
  • 1942 - (0830 hours) The Royal Regiment of Canada surrenders, after losing about 500 Canadians killed or captured.
  • 1942 - (0930 hours) Allied commanders order a general withdrawal from Dieppe.
  • 1942 - As the British 40 Commando Royal Marine troops approach the Dieppe beach, Lieutenant-Colonel Joseph Phillips signals for following boats to turn back. He is shot down.
  • 1942 - (1050 hours) British Major General J.H. Roberts orders the immediate evacuation of troops from Dieppe.
  • 1942 - German submarine U564 sinks merchant ships Empire Cloud and British Consul in convoy TAW(S).
  • 1942 - (about 1310 hours) The last Allied troops are evacuated from Dieppe. At the end of the attack, 4384 Allied officer and soldiers are dead, wounded, or taken prisoner, of which 3379 are Canadian. 108 British aircraft were shot down; 46 German aircraft were lost. The British navy lost one destroyer and 13 major landing craft.
  • 1942 - During the day, the fighter plane battle over Dieppe involved 730 Allied aircraft, flying 2955 sorties.
  • 1942 - US 8th Air Force B-17 bombers attack the German Luftwaffe fighter base at Abbeville.
  • 1944 - (1920 hours) The Falaise to Argentan gap in France is loosely closed, trapping about 50,000 German forces.
  • 1944 - In Paris, France, underground resistance groups launch a revolt against their German captors.
  • 1944 - (end of day) In France, the 1st Polish Armoured Division captures Chambois, southeast of Trun.
  • 1945 - US military intelligence report "Investigations, Research, Developments and Practical Use of the German Atomic Bomb" reports on German pilot Hans Zinsser over northern Germany in early October 1944, 12-15km from an atomic bomb test station, observed "strong, bright illumination of the whole atmosphere, lasting about 2 seconds", followed by "a cloud shaped like a mushroom with the turbulent billowing sections... over the spot where the explosion took place".
  • 1992 - Marshall Islands issues two postage stamps marking the 50th anniversary of the Dieppe raid, and the Battle of Stalingrad.
  • 1995 - Tuvalu issues four postage stamps marking the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II.
  • 2017 - The research vessel Petrel locates the wreck of the USS Indianapolis, 18,000 feet below the surface of the Philippine Sea.

Swedish history:

  • 1700 - Russia declares war on Sweden.
  • 1772 - In the early morning, King Gustav reviews the guard. He gathers a small group of officers, and asks if they would protect him, as he was in danger. They agree. Then the troops in the courtyard are asked and they agree.
  • 1772 - King Gustav and his guard troops march through the streets of Stockholm. The Council is arrested, and they are forced to resign.

A&W Root Beer history:

  • 1998 - The A & W Root Beer Company of Canada Inc. applies for a registered trade-mark on the phrase "A & W EXPRESS".

USA coin history:

  • 1955 - The Philadelphia Mint inadvertantly strikes about 40,000 1955 Lincoln cents showing doubling of the image, from a hub-doubled obverse die. When the error is caught, the chief coiner decides to release the 20,000-24,000 already mixed in with some 10 million cents ready to ship out.
  • 1980 - Leroy C. Van Allen and Pete R. Bishal find a certificate in the Rutherford B. Hayes Library and Museum, documenting the authenticity of the first 1878 Morgan silver dollar, struck March 11 and presented to the President.
  • 2010 - The US Mint officially launches the 2010 James Buchanan Presidential dollar in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and releases it to circulation.

Sports history:

  • 1903 - Philadelphia Phillies suffer record 9th straight posponed game.
  • 1909 - First race at the Indianapolis 500 Speedway in Indiana, USA.
  • 1917 - Sunday benefit baseball game at the Polo Grounds results in John McGraw and Christy Mathewson's arrest for violating Blue laws.
  • 1934 - Helen Hull Jacobs win US Lawn Tennis Association.
  • 1951 - Bill Veeck (Saint Louis Browns) sends Eddie Gaedel, a midget, to pinch-hit.
  • 1957 - New York Giants vote to move their franchise to San Francisco in 1958.
  • 1962 - Homer Blancos plays the finest round in golf, shooting a 55.
  • 1965 - Cincinnati Reds' Jim Maloney's second no-hitter of year; beats Chicago Cubs, 1-0.
  • 1969 - Chicago Cubs' Ken Holtzman no-hits Atlanta Braves, 3-0.
  • 1982 - Renaldo Nehemiah of US sets record for 110 m hurdles, 12.93 seconds.
  • 1983 - LSU football player Billy Cannon sentenced to five years for counterfeiting.
  • 1984 - Lee Trevino wins the PGA.
  • 1988 - New York Rangers sign ex-Montreal Canadiens' great Guy Lafleur.
  • 1990 - New York Yankees' player Kevin Mass is quickest to reach 14 home runs (approx 128 at bat).

  • 1979 - Crew of Soyuz 32 returns to Earth aboard Soyuz 34 after 175-day flight.

USA history:

  • 1812 - 44-gun frigate USS Constitution defeats British 38-gun frigate HMS Guerriere. The strength of the American ship causes British round cannonballs to bounce off the sides, leading to the ship's nickname "Old Ironsides".
  • 1848 - The New York Herald newspaper breaks the news to the East Coast of the United States that there is a gold rush in California.
  • 1890 - Chickaumauga is established as a national military park in Georgia.
  • 1890 - Chattanooga is established as a national military park in Tennessee.
  • 1934 - The first All-American Soap Box Derby is held in Dayton, Ohio.
  • 1942 - First American offensive in Pacific in World War II, Guadalcanal, Solomon Island.
  • 1943 - In Quebec, Canada, a conference is held by representatives of Canada, Great Britain, and the USA, over six days. British and American Chiefs of Staff approve outline plans for operation Overlord, an invasion of France across the English Channel. Target date is set for May 1, 1944. Discussions are held on atomic research and use of an atomic bomb.
  • 1950 - ABC begins Saturday morning kid shows (Animal Clinic and Acrobat Ranch).
  • 1958 - NAACP Youth Council begin sit-ins at Oklahoma City Lunch counters.
  • 1976 - President Gerald R Ford wins Republican presidential nomination at Kansas City convention.
  • 1981 - U.S. President Ronald Reagan appoints Sandra Day O'Connor as a US Supreme Court Justice.
  • 1987 - ABC News Chief Middle East Correspondent Charles Glass escapes his Hizballah kidnappers in Beirut, Lebanon, after sixty-two days in captivity.
  • 1990 - Leonard Bernstein conducts his final concert, ending with Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 7 performed by the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
  • 1998 - On the day of his 52nd birthday, U.S. President Bill Clinton admits in taped testimony that he had an "improper physical relationship" with White House intern Monica Lewinsky. He also admits before the nation that night in a nationally televised address that he "misled people" about his sexual affair with Lewinsky.
  • 2017 - The research vessel Petrel locates the wreck of the USS Indianapolis, 18,000 feet below the surface of the Philippine Sea.
