Personal computer history:

  • 1999 - Microsoft releases ActiveSync 3.0 for Windows CE, a software update allowing better communications with desktop computers.
  • 2001 - Be announces it will be acquired by Palm for US$11 million.
  • 2004 - Microsoft releases the Microsoft Works 8 software. Applications include word processor, spreadsheet, database, email, calendar, standalone dictionary, and PowerPoint slide viewer. Price is US$49.95.
  • 2004 - The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office rejects ten patent claims of the University of California, in a review of the patent for how a Web browser opens plug-in applications.
  • 2012 - Sweden issues a postage stamp depicting a laptop computer.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1930 - The Silly Symphony film Midnight in a Toy Shop is released to theaters.
  • 1955 - The Dumbo Flying Elephants ride opens in Fantasyland at Disneyland.
  • 1955 - The Phantom Boats ride opens in Tomorrowland at Disneyland.
  • 1958 - The Fire Truck begins transportation services on Main Street, U.S.A. in Disneyland.
  • 1969 - Disneyland attendance hits a record 82,516 visitors in one day.
  • 1994 - Grenada Grenadines issues ten postage stamps depicting various Disney characters and Korean themes.
  • 1997 - The Knight Shop opens in Fantasyland at Disneyland.
  • 2007 - The United States Postage Service issues four 41-cent postage stamps entitles Art of Disney: Magic, depicting Disney characters: Mickey Mouse, Peter Pan and Tinker Bell, Dumbo and Timothy Mouse, Aladdin and Genie.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1959 - At Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, the SCCA 500-mile Wisconsin Grand Prix endurance race is held. The Sting Ray is raced by Dick Thompson and Anatole Lapine but does not finish due to brake failure.
  • 1969 - At the New York National Speedway, the AHRA Summer Nationals drag races are held. John Mahler runs the 1/4-mile in 11.04 seconds at 129.00 MPH, in a 1967 L88 Corvette, setting a new world record in A/Sports Production class.
  • 1991 - In Monterey, California, the Monterey Historic Automobile Races are held, over three days. Noel Park wins in his class in a 1958 Corvette.
  • 2002 - At the Quail Lodge golf course in Carmel, California, the Concorso Italiono car show is held. Corvette is a guest make, with over 120 cars on display.
  • 2002 - At the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, in Monterey, California, the 29th Rolex Monterey Historic Automobile Races are held, over three days. Corvette is the honored marque. Over sixty historic Corvettes are on display and participate in racing, including: Corvette SR-2, Corvette SS, 1959 Sting Ray, CERV-I, Daytona-winning Corvette C5-R, Mako Shark, Aerovette, Grand Sport, 1953 Corvette #2 (EX-122), and plenty of early race Corvettes. The 1955-59 Sports Racing Cars over 2500cc race is held.
    • Finishing 24th is the #6 1956 Corvette SR-2, driven by Rich Mason.
    The 1956-62 GT/Production cars over 2500cc race is held.
    • Finishing 1st is the #43 1957 Corvette, driven by Ken Epsman.
    • Finishing 2nd is the #59 1959 Corvette, driven by Ron Cressey.
    • Finishing 3rd is the #77 white 1957 Corvette, driven by Joe Freitas.
    • Finishing 4th is the #1 1956 Corvette, driven by Bryan Hill.
    • Finishing 5th is the #69 1962 Corvette, driven by Ken Mennella.
    • Finishing 7th is the #614 1959 Corvette, driven by Steve Earle.

    • Finishing 2nd is the #17 1969 Corvette, driven by Randy Peterson.
    • Finishing 3rd is the #2 1963 Corvette Grand Sport, driven by Tom Armstrong.
    • Finishing 4th is the #14 1966 Corvette, driven by John Kiland.

  • 2002 - In Monterey, California, the Monterey Auction Company holds the Monterey Sports Car Auction is held, over two days.

World War II history:

  • 1939 - Captain Bertrand of the French Signals Intelligence gives to a British Secret Service Liaison officer a Polish-built copy of the German Enigma coding machine, and much related material.
  • 1939 - Baron von Weizsaecker, State Secretary in the German Foreign Office, tells Sir Nevile Henderson, British Ambassador to Berlin, that Russia would give negligible help to Poland, and would join in sharing the spoils.
  • 1943 - Allied high command agrees that Italy should be the next target, quickly before a massive German build-up of forces can take place.
  • 1943 - (evening) 154 British bombers attack Turin, Italy.
  • 1944 - German panzers attack US 90th Infantry Division guarding Argentan. The defence holds.
  • 1944 - (0200 hours) Field Marshal Günther von Kluge recommends to Alfred Jodl at Hitler's headquarters that German forces trapped in the Falaise pocket be evacuated.
  • 1944 - (1640 hours) Adolf Hitler authorizes a full withdrawal from the Falaise pocket.
  • 1944 - (evening) 461 British Lancaster bombers attack Stettin, Germany, inflicting huge damage.
  • 1944 - (evening) 348 British Lancaster bombers attack Kiel, Germany.
  • 1944 - (night) The westernmost German units within the Falaise pocket pull back to the Orne River.
  • 1945 - The Regent of Siam proclaims the declaration of war of January 1942 to be null and void.
  • 2005 - A memorial of granite commemorating the Siege of Malta is unveiled in London, England, outside All Hallows Chruch near the Tower of London.

Video game history:

  • 2000 - Square EA releases the Chrono Cross video game for the PlayStation in the US.
  • 2002 - Electronic Arts releases the Madden NFL 2003 video game for the PlayStation, PlayStation 2, Game Boy Advance, and GameCube in the US.
  • 2005 - Konami releases the Death Jr. video game for the PlayStation Portable in the US.
  • 2005 - Sony CEA releases the EyeToy: Play 2 video game for the PlayStation 2 in the US.
  • 2005 - Sega releases the Sonic Gems Collection for the GameCube in the US.
  • 2011 - Ignition Entertainment releases the El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron video game for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in the US.

Swedish history:

  • 1434 - Engelbrekt's forces pass through Norrköping to Vadstena, to council in session, convincing them with threats to support their complaints and renounce allegiance to King Erik.
  • 1626 - Danish forces and allies are soundly defeated at Lutter-am-Barenberg near Wolfenbüttel, by an army of the Catholic League under Czech leader Wallenstein.
  • 1630 - Wolgast surrenders to Swedish forces.
  • 1772 - The Swedish Council learns of the revolt in Kristianstad.
  • 1772 - Baron J.M. Sprengtporten begins a revolt in Finland.
  • 1810 - Lieutenant Mörner is disciplined for approaching Bernadotte without authorization, but he convinces the riksdag that Bernadotte would be the best choice for Sweden. The crown prince committee of the riksdag votes ten to two in favor of Bernadotte.

Canadian coin history:

  • 2011 - At the ANA's World's Fair of Money in Rosemont, Illinois, the Royal Canadian Mint displays five trial strikes of Proof 2011 Full Hunter's Moon ringed bimetallic $5 coins, with niobium inserts in five different colors: orange, light blue, light green, pale yellow, and dark purple.

USA coin history:

  • 2007 - The US Mint releases the 2007 Thomas Jefferson Presidential dollar to circulation.
  • 2011 - (to August 20) ANA World's Fair of Money in Rosemont, Illinois, Stack's Bowers Galleries coin auction. Some highlights:
    • 1975 10-cent, no "S", Proof-68 PCGS: US$349,600;
    • 1875 $10, AU-53+ PCGS: US$345,000;

Sports history:

  • 1743 - Earliest boxing code of rules formulated in England (Jack Broughton).
  • 1870 - Fred Goldsmith demonstrates that curve ball thrown in baseball isn't an optical illusion.
  • 1915 - Kansas City Packers' pitcher Alex Main no-hits Buffalo Blues (Federal League), 5-0.
  • 1920 - Ray Chapman, of the Cleveland Indians, is hit in the head by New York Yankees' Carl Mays' pitch.
  • 1936 - Games of the XI Olympiad close in Berlin.
  • 1954 - Time Incorporated publishes the first issue of Sports Illustrated.
  • 1965 - AFL awards its first expansion franchise (Miami Dolphins).
  • 1976 - Saint Louis Cardinals beat San Diego Chargers 20-10 in Tokyo (NFL expo).
  • 1977 - New York Yankees blow 9-4 lead in 9th but beat Chicago 11-10 in bottom of 9th.
  • 1981 - Highest score in World Cup soccer match (New Zealand-13, Fiji-0).
  • 1984 - Largest harness racing purse (US$2,161,000 - Nihilator wins US$1,080,500).
  • 1987 - New York Mets beat Chicago Cubs, 23-9.
  • 1989 - Roger Kingdom of USA sets the 110m hurdle record (12.92) in Zurich, Switzerland.
  • 2002 - The Major League Players' Association announces a voting result of 57-0 to set an August 30 strike date.
  • 2006 - Home plate umpire Bruce Froemming is honored during an on-field ceremony at Fenway Park for working his 5000th major league game of his 36-year career, second only to Bill Klem who arbitrated 5,374 games from 1905-40.
  • 2008 - At the Beijing Olympics, Jamaica's Usain Bolt wins the men's 100 metres in world record time of 9.69 seconds. American Michael Phelps equals Mark Spitz's 36-year record of winning seven golds in one Olympic games, winning the 100m butterfly. Zimbabwe's Kirsty Coventry, wins the women's 200 backstroke, in a world record time. Britain's Rebecca Adlington also breaks a world record to take gold in the women's 800 freestyle.
  • 2009 - In Brno, Czech Republic, round 11 of the FIM MotoGP Championship is won by Valentino Rossi.
  • 2009 - At the Athletics World Championships in Berlin, Germany, Usain Bolt of Jamaica sets a new world record in the 100m dash with a time of 9.58 seconds.
  • 2022 - At Oracle Park in San Francisco, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: San Francisco Giants beats Arizona Diamondbacks by score 2-1.
  • 2022 - At Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Seattle Mariners beats Los Angeles Angels by score 8-2.
  • 2022 - At American Family Field in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Milwaukee Brewers beats Los Angeles Dodgers by score 5-4.
  • 2022 - At Guaranteed Rate Field in Chicago, Illinois, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Chicago White Sox beats Houston Astros by score 4-3.
  • 2022 - At Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Oakland Athletics beats Texas Rangers by score 5-1.

  • 2003 - The 2003 Okanagan Mountain Park Fire spreads quickly on the outskirts of Kelowna, British Columbia, threatening to engulf the largest town in B.C.'s interior.
  • 2004 - Severe flooding occurs in the village of Boscastle in Cornwall, England.

USA history:

  • 1777 - Americans defeat British in Battle of Bennington, Vermont.
  • 1780 - British decisively defeat Americans in Battle of Camden, South Carolina.
  • 1812 - US General William Hull surrenders Detroit and Michigan territory to a smaller force under British Major General Isaac Brock and Shawnee allies.
  • 1861 - US President Abraham Lincoln prohibits USA states from trading with Confederate states.
  • 1863 - Emancipation Proclamation signed.
  • 1890 - Alexander Clark, journalist/lawyer, is named US minister to Liberia.
  • 1934 - US explorer William Beebe descends 3,028 feet (1922 m) in Bathysphere.
  • 1956 - Adlai E Stevenson nominated as Democratic US presidential candidate.
  • 1984 - John De Lorean is acquitted of all eight charges of possessing and distributing cocaine.
  • 1987 - Northwest Airlines Flight 255 (a McDonnell Douglas MD-82) crashes on takeoff from Detroit Metropolitan Airport in Romulus, Michigan, killing 155 people on-board. Second worst airline disaster in US history.
  • 1990 - Iraq orders 4000 Britons and 2500 Americans in Kuwait to Iraq.
  • 2001 - Rosario Marin begins term as 41st Treasurer of the US.

  • 2007 - The Crandall Canyon Mine in Emery County, Utah, collapses a second time, killing three rescue workers and injuring six more.
  • 2007 - José Padilla is convicted in the USA of conspiracy to murder individuals overseas, conspiracy to materially aid terrorists, and materially aiding terrorists in fact. Padilla had first been arrested in May 2002.
  • 2011 - (to August 20) At ANA World's Fair of Money in Rosemont, Illinois, Stack's Bowers Galleries sells at auction USA 1896 Silver Certificates, three uncut sheets of first $1, $2, and $5, for US$1,265,000, highest paid for single US currency lot at auction.
