Personal computer history:

  • 2009 - A U.S. District Court in Texas orders Microsoft to stop selling the 2003 and 2007 versions of Word software in the United States in two months, and orders the company to pay US$290 million in damages to i4i Limited Partnership and Infrastructures for Information, a small Canadian firm that accused the software giant of violating its patents.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1932 - The Mickey Mouse film Mickey's Nightmare is released to theaters. Pluto and Minnie Mouse also appear. This film is a remake of the Oswald the Lucky Rabbit film Poor Papa.
  • 1942 - RKO Radio Pictures premieres the Disney film Bambi in the US at Radio City Music Hall. It cost US$1.741 million to make. The film is based on the book by Felix Salten.
  • 1945 - Disney delivers the film The Human Body to the Coordinator of Inter-American Affairs.
  • 1945 - Disney delivers the film What is Disease? to the Coordinator of Inter-American Affairs. The film is also known as El Enemigo Invisible or The Unseen Enemy.
  • 1945 - Disney delivers the film Tuberculosis to the Coordinator of Inter-American Affairs.
  • 1945 - Disney delivers the film How Disease Travels to the Coordinator of Inter-American Affairs.
  • 1948 - The Pluto film Cat Nap Pluto is released. Figaro the cat also appears.
  • 1954 - Disney releases the animated short film Little Toot to theaters. It was originally released as part of the film Melody Time.
  • 1954 - Disney releases the Donald Duck film Grin and Bear It to theaters. Humphrey Bear also appears. Ranger J. Audubon Woodlore makes his debut appearance.
  • 1983 - Attendance at Tokyo Disneyland reaches a high of 94,378 for the day.
  • 1996 - Walt Disney Home Video releases the animated film Aladdin and the King of Thieves direct to videocassette.
  • 2010 - The Disney Channel airs the Disney Channel Original Movie Den Brother.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1956 - Pilot line production of 1957 Corvettes begins.
  • 1978 - At the Brainerd International Raceway in Brainerd, Minnesota, the Pepsi/7-Up SCCA Trans-Am Championship - Round 8 race is held.
    • In 4th place in category II and 4th place overall, but not finishing the race, is the Pickett Racing #6 Corvette 427, driven by Greg Pickett.
    • Finishing 5th in category II and 6th overall is the Automotive Enterprise #27 Corvette 427, driven by Rich Sloma.
    • Finishing 2nd in category I and 8th overall is the LSI-Corvettes Unlimited #37 Corvette 454, driven by Doug Rippie.
    • Finishing 3rd in category I and 9th overall is the Phantom Racing #43 Corvette 427, driven by Frank Joyce.

  • 1993 - St. Vincent issues twelve postage stamps marking the 40th anniversary of Corvette, depicting various year models.
  • 2004 - At the Watkins Glen International raceway in Watkins Glen, New York, the Sahlen's 200 at The Glen race is held, round eight of the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series. Finishing 10th in SGS class and 31st overall is the Michael Baughman Racing #46 Corvette, driven by Michael Baughman and Mike Yeakle.
  • 2005 - At the Denver Street Circuit in Denver, Colorado, the Cytomax Sport Drink 100 race is held, round seven of the Trans-Am Series.
    • Finishing 6th is the Derhaag Motorsports #49 Corvette, driven by Randy Ruhlman.
    • Finishing 8th is the Derhaag Motorsports #78 Corvette, driven by Hima Maher.
    • In 18th place, but not finishing the race, is the Tony Ave Racing #06 Corvette, driven by Joey Scarallo.

World War II history:

  • 1940 - Adolf Hitler's "Eagle Day" commences, with 1485 plane sorties against British ports and airfields, attempting to eliminate British air forces as an obstacle to invasion.
  • 1940 - In Canada, Colonel E.L.M. Burns proposes developing a Canadian parachute force. The idea is rejected by the Director of Military Operations in headquarters.
  • 1940 - (very early) Five British Hampden bombers attack a crucial aqueduct over the River Ems in Germany. Three planes return in bad shape, but with their mission accomplished.
  • 1940 - Twelve British Blenheim bombers attack Hemsteds airfield in Holland. Only one plane returns.
  • 1942 - (early) E-boats from Pantelleria attack convoy Pedestal. They sink four merchant ships: Santa Elisa, Wairangi, Almeria Lykes, and Glenarchy. The cruiser HMS Manchester is damaged, and later sinks. Cargo ship Rochester Castle is torpedoed, but continues to sail for Malta.
  • 1942 - (morning) Italian planes from Sicily attack convoy Pedestal. They bomb merchant ship Waimarama and damage tanker Ohio.
  • 1943 - The US 9th Air Force attacks the Messerschmitt works at Wiener Neustadt in Austria.
  • 1944 - The US Army 15 Corps captures Argentan in Normandy.
  • 1945 - US President Harry Truman authorizes a 1000-plane raid on Tokyo, Japan.
  • 1994 - France issues a postage stamp marking the 50th anniversary of the Allied landings in Provence.

Video game history:

  • 1991 - Nintendo releases the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (Super NES) video game system in the US. It features 3.58MHz 16-bit 65c816 processor, 128kB RAM, 256-color graphics in 512x448 resolution. The 65c816 processor is a 16-bit version of the 6502 processor, but the new system cannot use game cartridges from the original Nintendo Entertainment System. Price is US$199.95, including two controllers and game Super Mario World.
  • 1993 - Capcom releases the Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting video game for the Super NES in the US.
  • 2001 - Sega cuts the price of the Dreamcast game system in the US from US$99.99 to US$79.99.

Swedish history:

  • 1628 - The Council of the Realm authorizes English engineer Ian Bulmer to try to raise the Vasa ship.
  • 1645 - At Brömsebro, peace is signed with Denmark. Sweden gains the islands of Gotland and Ösel, and Halland (for 30 years) from Denmark. Norway cedes to Sweden the northern provinces of Jämtland and Härjedalen. Denmark regains Scania and keeps Blekinge.
  • 1905 - Norwegians hold a referendum on independence. An overwhelming majority favor it.
  • 2004 - (to August 29) The 28th Olympic Games are held in Athens, Greece. Sweden wins 4 gold, 1 silver, and 2 bronze medals.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1991 - A Royal proclamation specifies that the design of a 1992 25c nickel coin have "1867-1992" on obverse, and "New Brunswick" on the reverse.
  • 1991 - A Royal proclamation specifies that the designs of the base metal 1c, 5c, 10c, 25c, 50c, and $1 coins show the dates "1867-1992".

USA coin history:

  • 2009 - The US Mint releases the 2009 Lincoln, Professional Life cent to circulation.

Sports history:

  • 1906 - Chicago Cubs' pitcher Jack Taylor ends a string of completing 202 games (187 complete, 15 relief) by the Brooklyn Dodgers in the third inning.
  • 1910 - Brooklyn Dodgers and Pittsburgh Pirates play to 8-8 tie, both have 38 at bats, 13 hits, 12 assists, two errors, five strikeouts, three walks, 1 passed ball, and 1 hit by pitch.
  • 1917 - Philadelphia Phillies steal five bases in an inning against the Boston Braves.
  • 1919 - Man O' War's only defeat (Upset wins at Saratoga).
  • 1928 - Soviet Union's Spartacan Games begin.
  • 1932 - New York Yankees' pitcher Red Ruffing homers and wins game 1-0 in 10 tying the feat of Washington Senators' Tom Hughes who also won 1-0 in 10 in 1906.
  • 1939 - New York Yankees set American League shutout margin with 21-0 victory over Philadelphia Athletics.
  • 1948 - Satchel Paige at age 42 pitches his first major league complete game.
  • 1963 - Warren Spahn sets left-hander strike out mark at 2,382.
  • 1969 - Baltimore Orioles' player Jim Palmer no-hits Oakland Athletics, 8-0.
  • 1969 - Temporary baseball commissioner Bowie Kuhn is formally appointed.
  • 1978 - New York Yankees score five runs in top of 7th, but rain causes game to be halted and thus score goes back to previous inning, Baltimore Orioles wins 3-0.
  • 1979 - Lou Brock gets his 3,000th career hit.
  • 1980 - Tatyana Kazankina of USSR sets 1.5k woman's record (3:52.47) in USSR.
  • 1988 - Boston Red Sox win American League record 24 straight home games.
  • 1988 - Ronald J Dossenbach sets world record for pedaling across Canada from Vancouver, British Columbia to Halifax, Nova Scotia in 13 days, 15 hours, 4 min.
  • 1988 - US beats Jamaica 5-1, in second round of 1990 world soccer cup.
  • 1997 - In Belo Horizonte, Brazil, Cruzeiro wins Sporting Cristal of Peru by 1-0 and are Copa Libertadores de América champions by second time.
  • 1999 - Steffi Graf announces her retirement from tennis after a 17 year career in which she won 107 career titles including 22 Grand Slams.
  • 2004 - (to August 29) The Games of the XXVIII Olympiad are held in Athens, Greece.
  • 2008 - At the Beijing Olympics, American swimmer Michael Phelps wins his 10th and 11th career gold medals, in men's 200-metre butterfly and 4x200 freestyle relay in world record 6:58.56). Phelps is now the record holder of most career Olympic gold medals.
  • 2008 - At the Beijing Olympics, Stephanie Rice of Australia wins gold in the women's 200-metre individual medley in world record 2:08.45.
  • 2008 - At the Beijing Olympics, Federica Pellegrini of Italy wins gold in the women's 200-metre freestyle in world record 1:54.82.
  • 2022 - At Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Los Angeles Angels beats Minnesota Twins by score 5-3.
  • 2022 - At Oracle Park in San Francisco, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: San Francisco Giants beats Pittsburgh Pirates by score 2-0.
  • 2022 - At Coors Field in Denver, Colorado, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Arizona Diamondbacks beats Colorado Rockies by score 6-0.
  • 2022 - At Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Texas Rangers beats Seattle Mariners by score 7-4.

Extreme weather history:

  • 2004 - Hurricane Charley kills 27 people in Florida after killing four in Cuba and one in Jamaica. Charley made landfall near Cayo Costa, Florida as a Category 4 hurricane. Charley is the most intense hurricane to strike the United States since Hurricane Andrew in 1992.

USA history:

  • 1841 - The Independent Treasury Act is repealed, eliminating the federal government's banking system.
  • 1876 - Reciprocity Treaty between US and Hawaii is ratified.
  • 1889 - William Gray patents coin-operated telephone.
  • 1898 - US Army forces of General Wesley Merritt capture Manila, Philippines.
  • 1906 - Black soldiers raid Brownsville, Texas.
  • 1939 - Sabotage suspected in crash of the City of San Francisco which fell into the Humboldt River killing 24. (Elko, Nevada).
  • 1942 - RKO Radio Pictures premieres the Disney film Bambi in the US at Radio City Music Hall in New York City.
  • 1953 - US President Dwight Eisenhower establishes Government Contract Compliance Committee.
  • 1981 - US President Ronald Reagan signs the Economic Recovery Act of 1981, effective December 31.
  • 1991 - Death of James Roosevelt, American businessman and politician (born 1907).
  • 1991 - The Super Nintendo Entertainment System is released in the United States.
