Personal computer history:

  • 1997 - At the Macworld Expo, Steve Jobs and Bill Gates announce a five-year alliance of Apple Computer with Microsoft. Terms include: cross-licensing of existing patents plus new patents over the next five years, Microsoft will release Office for Macintosh over next five years, Apple will make Internet Explorer the default browser on all shipping Macintosh systems, Apple and Microsoft will collaborate on Java compatibility, Microsoft will invest US$150 million in Apple stock and hold it for at least three years. Jobs will join a revamped Apple board of directors with Larry Elison of Oracle added, and A.C. Markkula removed.
  • 2003 - European antitrust regulators announce a preliminary decision to require Microsoft to provide greater technical information to its server competitors and to reduce the ties between Windows and Windows Media Player.
  • 2004 - Microsoft releases Windows XP Service Pack 2 to computer manufacturers.
  • 2007 - BusinessWeek magazine publishes the Interbrand ranking of the 100 Best Global Brands. Number 2 is Microsoft, number 7 is Intel, number 33 is Apple.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1928 - Universal Pictures releases the first Oswald the Lucky Rabbit film, Poor Papa, to theaters.
  • 1961 - The Flying Saucers ride opens in Tomorrowland at Disneyland.
  • 1970 - The Youth International Party (Yippies) holds an informal "First International Yippie Pow Wow" at Disneyland. After a tense day breaking up groups, Disneyland vice president of Operations Dick Nunis orders the park closed at 7:10 PM. In total, 23 of about 300 Yippies are arrested on a variety of charges.
  • 1987 - The TV series The Ellen Burstyn Show returns to TV.
  • 1988 - The Disney Channel airs the Disney Channel Premiere Film Ollie Hopnoodle's Haven of Bliss.
  • 1991 - Dominica issues ten postage stamps depicting scenes from The Little Mermaid.
  • 1993 - The CBS TV network airs the last episode of The Golden Palace.
  • 1993 - Disney releases the Touchstone Pictures live-action feature film My Boyfriend's Back to theaters in the US.
  • 1995 - Michael Eisner talks to the Disney board of directors about appointing Michael Ovitz as president of the company. The board approves the negotiated deal.
  • 1996 - Hollywood Pictures Home Video releases the film White Squall on videocassette.
  • 1999 - Disney releases the Hollywood Pictures live-action feature film The Sixth Sense to theaters in the USA.
  • 2002 - Hyperion Films releases The Adventures of Tom Thumb & Thumbeline on videocassette.
  • 2003 - Disney releases the live-action feature film Freaky Friday to theaters in the US.
  • 2007 - BusinessWeek magazine publishes the Interbrand ranking of the 100 Best Global Brands. Number 9 is Disney.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1999 - United International Pictures releases the film Mystery Men to theaters in the USA. A stretched 1978 Limited Edition Indianapolis 500 Pace Car Chevrolet Corvette appears.
  • 2000 - At the Mosport International Raceway in Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada, the Grand Prix At Mosport race is held, round 6 of the America Le Mans Series. Finishing 2nd in GTS class and 5th overall is the Corvette Racing #3 Corvette C5-R driven by Ron Fellows and Andy Pilgrim. They finish 0.353 seconds behind a Viper. This is the first race for C5-R chassis #003.
  • 2004 - At the Mosport International Raceway in Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada, round six of the American Le Mans Series is held.
    • Finishing 1st in GTS class is the Corvette Racing #4 Corvette C5-R, driven by Oliver Gavin and Olivier Beretta.
    • Finishing 2nd in GTS class is the Corvette Racing #3 Corvette C5-R, driven by Ron Fellows and Johnny O'Connell.

  • 2017 - At the Road America raceway in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, USA, the Continental Tire Road Race Showcase at Road America race is held, round 9 of the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship series.
    • Finishing 4th in GT Le Mans class and 14th overall is the Corvette Racing #3 Corvette C7.R driven by Jan Magnussen and Antonio Garcia.
    • Finishing 5th in GT Le Mans class and 15th overall is the Corvette Racing #4 Corvette C7.R driven by Tommy Milner and Oliver Gavin.

  • 2020 - General Motors issues recall N202309350 for 2020 model Corvette. The interior trunk release becomes inoperative after vehicle enters low-power sleep mode.

World War II history:

  • 1942 - On convoy SC-94 to Britain in the Atlantic ocean, Royal Canadian Navy destroyer Assiniboine rams and sinks German submarine U-210.
  • 1942 - "Moonshine" technology is first used operationally by British Bomber Command against German early-warning radar.
  • 1943 - Canadian forces capture Monte Seggio, Italy.
  • 1945 - (0245 hours) The B-29 plane Enola Gay takes off from Tinian island in the Marianas islands, piloted by Colonel Paul Tibbets, carrying an uranium atomic bomb.
  • 1945 - (0815 hours) One of three American planes flying over Hiroshima, Japan, drops three parachutes carrying blast-recording equipment. American Colonel Paul Tibbets and the crew of the Enola Gay flying at 31,600 feet altitude, drop a 4400 kg uranium-based atomic bomb over Hiroshima, Japan, set to detonate at 1850 feet above the city. The blast has the impact of a 500-mph wind, leveling almost everything within a two-mile radius, destroying 70,000 buildings, sixty percent of the city. 70,000 are killed, and 80,000 wounded. The atomic bomb becomes the largest man-made explosion in history, and largest single killer in history.
  • 1945 - (0816 hours) Quote by Enola Gay co-pilot Captain Robert Lewis over Hiroshima, Japan: "My God, what have we done?".
  • 1995 - Marshall Islands issues a postage stamp marking the 50th anniversary of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima, Japan.

Video game history:

  • 1986 - Nintendo releases the Metroid video game for the Famicom Disk System in Japan.
  • 1999 - SNK officially releases the NeoGeo Pocket Color handheld video game system in the US. It features 160x152 pixel color LCD screen displaying 146 simultaneous colors of a palette of 4096, two buttons and joystick controls. The system operates for about 40 hours on battery power. Price is US$69.95.

A&W Root Beer history:

  • 1983 - United Brands Company sells A & W Beverages to a consortium that creates A & W Brands Incorporated, with Lou Lowenkron as chairman and CEO.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1992 - The eighth 25c issue in the Canada 125 Coin Program is unveiled in Toronto, Ontario. Greg Salmela created the design.
  • 1999 - In Chicago, Illinois, an auction of the Canadian coins of the Pittman collection is held. A 1936 dot 1-cent coin sells for US$115,000. An 1871 50-cent coin sells for over $100,000. A 1919 50-cent coin grading MS-66 sells for nearly $27,500.

USA coin history:

  • 1892 - Congress authorizes the World's Columbian Exposition half dollar.

Sports history:

  • 1908 - Saint Louis Cardinals; pitcher John Lush's second no-hitter, beats Brooklyn Dodgers, 2-0 in six innings.
  • 1926 - Gertrude Ederle of New York swims across the English Channel in 14 hours 31 minutes; first woman, first American, and new record time.
  • 1937 - Cleveland Indians overturn New York Yankees' 7-6 win by a protest.
  • 1948 - Bob Mathias, US, wins decathlon at London Olympics.
  • 1948 - Fanny Blankers-Koen (Netherlands) is first women to win three golds at Olympics.
  • 1958 - Glenn Davis sets record of 49.2s in 400-metre hurdles.
  • 1960 - Pittsburgh Steelers (NFL) beat Toronto Argonauts (Canadian Football League) 43-16 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
  • 1967 - Minnesota Twins' Dean Chance pitches a perfect game against Boston Red Sox, 2-0 in five innings.
  • 1969 - Baltimore Orioles pull their third triple play (5-4-3 versus Kansas City Royals).
  • 1973 - Roberto Clemente is inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, along with Monte Irvin.
  • 1974 - Sixth time Philadelphia Phillies get just one assist in game; no other team did it twice.
  • 1980 - American University administration declares five Pac-10 schools ineligible for conference titles and post-season play due to transcript and curriculum abuses.
  • 1983 - Minnesota Vikings beat Saint Louis Cardinals 28-10 in London, England (NFL expo).
  • 1984 - Carl Lewis wins his second (long jump) gold medal in Summer Olympics.
  • 1986 - Baltimore Orioles (Dwyer and Sheets) and Texas Rangers (Harrah) hit record three grand slams.
  • 1989 - Boston Red Sox retire Carl Yastrezemski's number 8.
  • 1990 - New York Yankees' player Kevin Mass sets record with 11th home run in first 86 at bats.
  • 2017 - At the Road America raceway in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, USA, the Continental Tire Road Race Showcase at Road America race is held, round 9 of the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship series.

    • Finishing 1st in GT Daytona class and 17th overall is the Turner Motorsport #96 BMW M6 GT3 driven by Jens Klingmann and Jesse Krohn.

  • 2022 - At T-Mobile Park in Seattle, Washington, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Los Angeles Angels beats Seattle Mariners by score 7-1.
  • 2022 - At Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Los Angeles Dodgers beats San Diego Padres by score 8-3.
  • 2022 - At Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Colorado Rockies beats Arizona Diamondbacks by score 3-2.
  • 2022 - At Busch Stadium in Saint Louis, Missouri, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Saint Louis Cardinals beats New York Yankees by score 1-0.

USA history:

  • 1815 - US flotilla ends piracy by Algiers, Tunis and Tripoli.
  • 1854 - US Congress passes Confiscation Act.
  • 1862 - CSA ironclad Arkansas is badly damaged in USA attack.
  • 1864 - Rebels evacuate Fort Powell, Mobile Bay.
  • 1870 - White conservatives suppress black vote and capture Tennessee legislature.
  • 1890 - First use of electric chair execution, on convicted murderer William Kemmler, at Auburn Prison, New York.
  • 1926 - Warner Bros premieres Vitaphone sound-on-disc movie system (New York), Don Juan with John Barrymore shown.

  • 1988 - (to August 7) A riot erupts in Tompkins Square Park (New York City) when police attempt to enforce a newly-passed curfew for the park. Bystanders, artists, residents, homeless people and political activists are caught up in the police action.
  • 1993 - Louis Freeh is confirmed by the United States Senate as director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
  • 1996 - NASA announces that the ALH 84001 meteorite, thought to originate from Mars, contains evidence of primitive life-forms.
