Personal computer history:

  • 1985 - Ashton-Tate ships dBase III and Framework for the TI Professional computer.
  • 1989 - In Boston, Massachusettes, the SIGGRAPH show is held. NewTek shows the Video Toaster for the Amiga. Release price is to be US$1595.
  • 1991 - Dell Computer announces it will make a line of personal computers for retail sale via Staples stores in the USA.
  • 1991 - Hewlett-Packard introduces the HP DeskWriter C 300 dpi color printer for the Macintosh. Price is US$1095.
  • 1991 - Hewlett-Packard introduces its first color image scanner, the HP Scanjet IIc 400 dpi color flatbed scanner. Price for the Macintosh is US$1995; for other computers, US$2195.
  • 1996 - Intel releases the 150 MHz mobile Pentium processor, designed for use in portable computers. The processor uses 0.35 micron technology, and operates on 3.3 volts of power externally, while its internal core only requires 3.1 volts. Price is US$341 in quantities of 1000.
  • 1997 - The Macworld Expo trade show is held in Boston, Massachusettes, over four days.
  • 1997 - Apple Computer announces Power Macintosh 8600 and 9600 systems with 300 to 350 MHz PowerPC 604e processors and Mac OS 8 operating system. Prices range from US$3700 to US$5400.
  • 1999 - The GenCon convention is held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, over four days. Strategic Simulations officially announces the Pool of Radiance 2 game for Windows PCs. Interplay and Bioware announce the Neverwinter Nights game for Windows PCs.
  • 1999 - eMachines introduces the eOne personal computer. It features built-in 15-inch monitor, speakers, 1.44 MB floppy disk drive, CD-ROM drive, two USB ports, Ethernet jack, modem, NTSC video-in port, 433 MHz Celeron processor, 64 MB SDRAM, ATI RagePro XL graphics. Price is about US$799-849.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1949 - The Donald Duck film Honey Harvester is released.
  • 1967 - The Adventure Through Inner Space attraction opens in Tomorrowland at Disneyland, using the Omnimover ride system.
  • 1987 - Disney releases the Touchstone Pictures live-action feature film Stakeout to theaters in the US.
  • 1988 - Disney releases the Touchstone Pictures live-action feature film The Rescue to theaters in the US.
  • 1992 - Walt Disney World welcomes its 400-millionth guest, Brandon Adams.
  • 1997 - The UPN TV network airs the last episode of the Social Studies show.
  • 1998 - The "Armadillo" rugged drilling machine from the movie Armageddon is placed on display at Disney-MGM Studios.
  • 2000 - The Bonfamille's Cafe restaurant at Port Orleans Resort at Walt Disney World closes.
  • 2003 - Touchstone Home Video releases the film Bringing Down the House on videocassette, and DVD for US$29.99 in the US.
  • 2004 - Disney announces the Disney Dream Desk PC computer. It features 2.6 GHz processor, Windows XP operating system, CD-RW/DVD drive, mouse, keyboard, digital pen, optional 14.1-inch LCD monitor wih mouse ears (US$299) and optional printer. Price is US$599.
  • 2010 - Comedy Central airs the Futurama TV show in the USA. The episode title "That Darn Katz!" is a play on Disney's 1965 film That Darn Cat!.

  • 1962 - At the Wisconsin Grand Prix, Richard Thompson races Gulf Oil's 1962 Corvette to a first in SCCA A-Production class.
  • 1979 - At the Watkins Glen Grand Prix Circuit in Watkins Glen, New York, the SCCA Trans-American Championship - Round 6 race is held.
    • Finishing 2nd in category I and 6th overall is the Dead Bear #5 Corvette, driven by Bill Adam.
    • Finishing 3rd in category I and 8th overall is the #14 Corvette, driven by Jim Sanborn.
    • Finishing 4th in category I and 9th overall is the Arthur Treachers #17 Corvette, driven by Paul Canary.
    • Finishing 5th in category I and 10th overall is the Rynone & Wiernicki #90 Corvette, driven by Tom Rynone.

    • Finishing 2nd in SGS class and 2nd overall is the First Racing #22 Corvette, driven by Michael Culver and Mike Fitzgerald.
    • Finishing 7th in SGS class and 34th overall is the Phoenix American Motorsports #37 Corvette, driven by John Heinricy and ? Dalcin.

    • The Corvette Racing #4 Corvette C5-R driven by Andy Pilgrim and Kelly Collins finishes 8th overall, but is disqualified due to being underweight by 2.5-kg on inspection at the end of the race.

  • 2018 - At the Road America raceway in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, USA, the Continental Tire Road Race Showcase race is held, round 9 of the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship series.
    • Finishing 2nd in GT Le Mans class and 14th overall is the Corvette Racing #4 Corvette C7.R driven by Tommy Milner and Oliver Gavin.
    • Finishing 3rd in GT Le Mans class and 15th overall is the Corvette Racing #3 Corvette C7.R driven by Jan Magnussen and Antonio Garcia.

World War II history:

  • 1940 - In Canada, Montreal mayor Camillien Houde is arrested, and charged under the Defence of Canada Regulations.
  • 1943 - The Soviet Voronezh Front captures Belgorod, south of Kursk.
  • 1943 - The Soviet Red Army re-captures Orel.
  • 1944 - (0200 hours) In Cowra, Australia, over 900 Japanese prisoners-of-war stage a mass escape. They set their quarters on fire, and rush the barbed wire fences and gun posts. 378 escape, but all are recaptured in following days. In total, 234 are killed, 108 wounded, and four Australian guards are killed.
  • 1944 - A massive Allied air campaign begins in southern France to knock out local bridges in preparation for a land invasion.
  • 1944 - (evening) In France, US 15th Corps captures Mayenne and Laval.
  • 1945 - (1600 hours) B-29 Superfortress No. 82, carrying an atomic bomb for use on Japan, is renamed Enola Gay, after the pilot's mother.
  • 1991 - The Federal and Islamic Republic of the Comoros issues eight postage stamps marking the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II.

USA coin history:

  • 1909 - US Treasury Secretary Franklin MacVeagh directs Assistant Treasury Secretary Charles Norton to cease production of Lincoln cents following media questions over the initials "V.D.B." appearing on the reverse.
  • 1939 - Congress passes legislation prohibiting further coinage or release of stocks of commemoratives authorized prior to March 1, 1939.
  • 2003 - The General Services Administration turns over the Old San Francisco Mint to the city of San Francisco.
  • 2005 - The US Mint launches the 2005 Jefferson, Ocean in View 5-cent at Cape Disappointment, Washington.
  • 2014 - (to August 9) At the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Illinois, the American Numismatic Association holds the 2014 World's Fair of Money. 12,600 people attend. The U.S. Mint launches the commemorative dual-dated gold Kennedy half dollar. Some auction highlights:
    • 1861 Liberty Head Paquet reverse double eagle: US$1,645,000;
    • 1792 half disme, Specimen-67 PCGS, 2nd best known,: US$1,292,500;
    • 1797 Draped Bust half dollar, MS-65+ PCGS: US$1,292,500;
    • Garrett Class III 1804 dollar: US$1,888,000.

  • 1901 - Peter O'Connor of Ireland sets long jump record at 24 feet 11.75 inches.
  • 1921 - First radio baseball broadcast, Harold Arlin on KDKA radio Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh Pirates beat Philadelphia Phillies 8-5.
  • 1927 - Philadelphia Phillies' Cy Williams hits for the cycle in just four at bats.
  • 1936 - At Berlin Olympics, Jesse Owens wins his third Olympic medal.
  • 1937 - Ranger (US) beats Endeavour II (England) in 17th America's Cup.
  • 1940 - Saint Louis Browns' John Whitehead no-hits Detroit Tigers, 4-0 in six innings.
  • 1954 - Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada hosts the British Empire Games.
  • 1954 - Boxing Hall of Fame's first election selects 24 modern and 15 pioneers.
  • 1959 - Chicago Cardinals (NFL) beat Toronto Argonauts (Canadian Football League) 55-26 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
  • 1960 - Detroit Tigers trade manager Jimmy Dykes for Cleveland Indians' manager Joe Gordon.
  • 1961 - Chicago Bears (NFL) beat Montreal Alouettes (Canadian Football League) 34-16 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
  • 1967 - First time an AFL team beats an NFL team, Denver Broncos beats Detroit Lions 13-7.
  • 1969 - Pittsburgh Pirates' player Willie Stargell becomes the first player to hit a home run completely out of Dodger Stadium, travelling 512 feet.
  • 1973 - Atlanta Braves' Phil Niekro no-hits San Diego Padres, 9-0.
  • 1975 - Philadelphia Phillies' first eight batters get hits for a major league record, win 13-5.
  • 1978 - New Orleans Saints beat Philadelphia Eagles 14-7 in Mexico City (NFL expo).
  • 1979 - Willie Mays, Warren Giles and Hack Wilson are inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.
  • 1980 - New York Mets' Doug Flynn ties record of three triples in a game.
  • 1984 - Joan Benoit (US) wins first Olympic marathon for women (2:24:52).
  • 1984 - Toronto Blue Jays' Cliff Johnson sets record with 19 pinch hit home runs.
  • 1985 - Baseball players go on strike for two days.
  • 1985 - Chicago White Sox player Tom Seaver wins game 300 over New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium.
  • 1986 - San Francisco Giants' pitcher Steve Carlton throws his 4000th strike-out.
  • 1986 - Ingrid Kristiansen of Norway sets the 5km woman's record (14:37.33).
  • 1991 - Sergei Bubka of USSR sets pole vault record (20.25 inches) in Malmö, Sweden.
  • 2001 - The Cleveland Indians defeat the Seattle Mariners 15-14 in a record-setting baseball game known as the Impossible Return.
  • 2016 - (to August 21) The 2016 Summer Olympics are held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

USA history:

  • 1837 - First ascent of Mount Marcy (5,344 feet) highest in Adirondack, New York.
  • 1858 - After several unsuccessful attempts, Cyrus West Field and others complete the first transatlantic telegraph cable.
  • 1861 - US Army abolishes flogging.
  • 1864 - Battle of Mobile Bay, Alabama; Admiral David Farragut orders "Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!".
  • 1882 - Standard Oil of New Jersey is established.
  • 1884 - Cornerstone for Statue of Liberty laid on Bedloe's Island (New York City).
  • 1909 - US Senate confirms Abram Piatt Andrew as Mint Director.
  • 1914 - First electric traffic light is installed, at Euclid Ave. and East 105th Street, Cleveland, Ohio, USA.
  • 1914 - US, Nicaragua sign treaty granting canal rights to US.
  • 1939 - An Act bans further striking of any US commemorative coin authorized before March 1, 1939.
  • 1953 - Operation "Big Switch": Korean War prisoners exchanged at Panmunjom.

  • 1966 - Martin Luther King Junior stoned during Chicago march.
  • 1981 - Ronald Reagan fires 11,359 striking air-traffic controllers who ignored his order for them to return to work.
  • 1988 - Mario Biaggi (Representative-Democrat-New York), convicted of racketeering, resigns seat.
  • 1992 - Walt Disney World welcomes its 400-millionth guest.
  • 2009 - Death of Baitullah Mehsud, by missile fired by US drone in South Waziristan, leader of Tehrik-Taliban in Pakistan.
  • 2010 - Elena Kagan is approved by the US Senate for a post on the US Supreme Court, by a vote of 63-37.
  • 2014 - (to August 9) In Rosemont, Illinois, USA the American Numismatic Association holds the 2014 World's Fair of Money. Some auction highlights:
