Since 1995, I have been collecting information on a variety of topics, creating several timelines of history. Personal computer history:

  • 1991 - Ashton-Tate announces it will reduce its workforce by fifteen percent.
  • 1993 - Apple Computer launches the Newton MessagePad 100 personal digital assistant at Macworld Expo, in Boston's Symphony Hall. It features 640 kB RAM, 3 MB of ROM storing applications and the operating system (Newton Intelligence), a low-voltage 20-MHz 32-bit ARM 610 microprocessor, 240x336 resolution (85 dpi) 2.8 x 4-inch LCD screen, one PCMCIA Type II expansion socket, data transfer of 9600bps, and runs 14 hours on four AAA batteries. 50,000 units sell in the first 10 weeks, but only 80,000 are sold during the product's life.
  • 1996 - Apple Computer introduces the dual-processor Power Macintosh 9500/180 MP computer. It features two 180 MHz PowerPC 604e processors, 32 MB RAM, 2 GB hard drive, and 8x CD-ROM drive. price is US$5699.
  • 1996 - Apple Computer introduces the Power Macintosh 9500/200. It features a 200 MHz PowerPC 604e processor, 32 MB RAM, 2 GB hard drive, 8X CD-ROM drive.
  • 1996 - Apple Computer introduces the Performa 6400 computer. It features 180 or 200 MHz PowerPC 603e processor, optional 256 kB L2 cache, 16 MB RAM, 1.6 or 2.4 GB hard drive, and two PCI slots.
  • 2005 - Apple Computer releases the Mighty Mouse for Macintosh computers, with 360-degree scroll ball and four programmable buttons. Price is US$49. This is the first multi-button mouse for Apple in 21 years.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1989 - Michael Eisner announces that Disney plans to double the size of the entertainment area of the Disney-MGM Studios Theme Park over three years. The park currently has a maximum guest capacity of 23,000.
  • 1991 - Disney generally releases the film The Doctor to theaters.
  • 1995 - In Aspen, Colorado, over three days, 36 Disney executives gather to brainstorm ideas for a second Anaheim-based theme park, next to Disneyland. The result is a plan for Disney's California Adventure.
  • 1995 - Theme parks at Walt Disney World have a delayed opening, at 11:00 AM, due to Hurricane Erin threatening the area.
  • 1999 - The Disney Wonder cruise ship arrives at Port Canaveral, Florida, from Italy, where it was built.
  • 2001 - In Burbank, California, Disney renames its Soundstage 2 to The Julie Andrews Stage.
  • 2002 - Disney releases the Touchstone Pictures film Signs to theaters in the US.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1969 - Sunoco (Sunray DX Oil Company merged into it) sells its 1967 L88 Corvette to Bob Luebbe of New York.
  • 1987 - At the Sears Point International Raceway in Sonoma, California, the Ford California Grand Prix race is held. The Corvette GTP finishes 3rd.
  • 2003 - At the Trois-Rivières circuit in Trois-Rivières, Quebec, Canada, the Grand Prix of Trois-Rivières race is held, round seven of the Trans-Am Series for the BFGoodrich Tires Cup is held.
    • Finishing 3rd is the Preformed Line Products #49 Corvette, driven by Randy Ruhlman.
    • Finishing 7th is the Revolution Motorsports #10 Corvette, driven by Bobby Sak.
    • Finishing 9th is the Cenweld/McNichols #23 Corvette, driven by Bob Ruman.
    • Finishing 10th is the Derhaag Motorsports #59 Corvette, driven by Simon Gregg.
    • Placing 12th, but not finishing the race, is the Trenton Forging #2 Corvette driven by Stuart Hayner.
    • Placing 13th, but not finishing the race, is the UNICCO Service Company #20 Corvette, driven by Garrett Kletjian.

  • 2020 - At the Road America raceway in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, USA, the IMSA SportsCar Weekend race is held, round 4 of the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship series.
    • Finishing 1st in GT Le Mans class and 10th overall is the Corvette Racing #3 Corvette C8.R driven by Jordan Taylor and Antonio Garcia.
    • Finishing 2nd in GT Le Mans class and 11th overall is the Corvette Racing #4 Corvette C8.R driven by Tommy Milner and Oliver Gavin.

World War II history:

  • 1934 - In Germany, following the death of President Paul von Hindenburg, Chancellor Adolf Hitler assumes the office of Reich President as well. The Wehrmacht oath of allegiance is changed to be directly to Adolf Hitler.
  • 1940 - German Foreign Minister Joachim von Ribbentrop informs the German ambassador in Madrid, Spain, that Germany desires Spain's early entry into the war.
  • 1940 - In Canada, Montreal mayor Camillien Houde publicly urges Quebecers to not sign up for national registration for war duty.
  • 1940 - A French Court Martial condemns Charles de Gaulle to death.
  • 1941 - British Prime Minister Winston Churchill sends a personal letter to Soviet leader Josef Stalin, proposing a conference on supplies, promising 40 Hurricane planes to Murmansk on September 6.
  • 1942 - In retaliation for the public protest of Dutch bishops against the deportation of Jews, the German Gestapo orders the arrest of former-Jewish Catholics, to be taken to Auschwitz.
  • 1942 - 14 merchant ships for Operation Pedestal (to Malta) leave Clyde, England.
  • 1942 - The Operation Pedestal merchant ships are joined by escort ships: 4 cruisers and 11 destroyers as close escort, plus 2 battleships, 4 aircraft carriers, 3 cruisers, and 15 destroyers as covering ships, and 8 submarines near Malta.
  • 1943 - (evening) British Bomber Command makes one last air raid on Hamburg, Germany, this time with 737 bombers. Over the four evening raids, 8500 tons of bombs were dropped, and 87 planes lost. 6200 acres of a total 8383 are made uninhabitable for months, half of the city's living areas destroyed, 900,000 people made homeless, over 1 million forced to leave the city, 186 of 574 large industrial works destroyed, 4118 of 9068 smaller factories destroyed, 180,000 tons of shipping sunk in the harbor or destroyed by fire, 26 or 27 submarines destroyed or delayed in construction.
  • 1943 - Canadian forces capture Regalbuto, Italy.
  • 1945 - The Potsdam Agreement is signed. Nuremberg is agreed to be the site of war crimes trial.
  • 1947 - France issues a postage stamp commemorating the British commando raid on Nazi submarine base at St. Nazaire, 1942.

Video game history:

  • 1993 - Nintendo releases The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening video game for the Game Boy in the US.
  • 1996 - Acclaim Entertainment releases the Mortal Kombat II video game for the PlayStation in Japan.
  • 2017 - Fullbright releases the Tacoma video game for the Xbox One in the USA.

Swedish history:

  • 1909 - The Swedish Employers Federation orders a general lockout affecting 100,000 workers, following a series of disputes and strikes since spring.
  • 1994 - Convicted escaped spy Stig Bergling voluntarily returns to Sweden, where he is expected to serve a full life sentence with no parole.

A&W Root Beer history:

  • 2005 - The A & W Concentrate Company renews its registered trademark of the target logo.

USA coin history:

  • 1909 - The US Mint releases the Lincoln cent to circulation, with designer initials "V.D.B." under design.
  • 1966 - The US Mint begins production of 1966-dated silver clad half dollar coins.
  • 2002 - The US Mint releases the 2002 Indiana quarter dollar to circulation.
  • 2007 - H.R. 3330 is introduced in the House of Representatives, seeking transfer of constitutional power over composition of coinage from Congress to Treasury.
  • 2010 - The Denver Mint begins striking Abraham Lincoln Presidential dollars for circulation.
  • 2012 - (to August 5) Heritage Auctions in Philadelphia. Total auction sales: $27.5 million. Some highlights:
    • 1907 $20 pattern, Ultra High Relief, Roman Numerals, Sans Serif Edge, PR-58 PCGS: $1,057,500;

  • 1864 - Second Saratoga Racetrack (New York) opens.
  • 1929 - Philadelphia Phillies' Don Hurst sets National League record of six consecutive games with a home run.
  • 1932 - Charlie Grimm replaces Roger Hornsby as manager of Chicago Cubs.
  • 1938 - First test of a yellow baseball (Brooklyn Dodgers versus Saint Louis Cardinals).
  • 1959 - Milwaukee Braves' Bill Bruton hits two bases loaded triples.
  • 1961 - Saint Louis Cardinals (NFL) beat Toronto Argonauts (Canadian Football League) 36-7 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
  • 1980 - US swimmers set three world records at National championships.
  • 1985 - Chicago White Sox backstop Carlton Fisk tags out two New York Yankees' runners at home plate during the same play.
  • 1986 - Jackie Joyner-Kersee (US) sets record for heptathlon (7161 points).
  • 1987 - Cincinnati Reds' Eric Davis becomes 7th and earliest 30 home run 30 steal man.
  • 1987 - Don Brown sets flight record for handbow (1,336 yards 1 foot 3 inches).
  • 1987 - Kevin Seitzer (Kansas City Royals), gets six hits in one baseball game.
  • 1987 - Michael Andretti runs fastest Indy car race in history (171.49 MPH).
  • 2009 - In Finland, round 9 of the FIA World Rally Championship is won by Mikko Hirvonen.
  • 2020 - At the Road America raceway in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, USA, the IMSA SportsCar Weekend race is held, round 4 of the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship series.

  • 2022 - At Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Los Angeles Angels beats Oakland Athletics by score 3-1.

  • 1776 - Formal signing of the American Declaration of Independence.
  • 1813 - Congress taxes bank note circulation 1-2 percent.
  • 1819 - First parachute jump in US.
  • 1832 - 1,300 Illinois militia defeat Sac and Fox Indians, ending Black Hawk War.
  • 1832 - Black Hawk is defeated (in Iowa).
  • 1832 - Whites decimate Indians in Battle of Bad Axe River, Wisconsin.
  • 1858 - First street mailboxes-Boston, Massachusetts, USA.
  • 1864 - Second Saratoga Racetrack (New York) opens.
  • 1876 - In Deadwood, South Dakota, James Butler "Wild Bill" Hickok, playing poker in Carl Mann's saloon, is shot dead (from behind) by Jack "Crooked Nose" McCall, for no apparent reason. Hickok reportedly held a pair of Aces and a pair of eights, which becomes known as the Dead Man's Hand.
