Personal computer history:

  • 1982 - In Tokyo, Japan, Fujitsu announces the development of 100-nanosecond 64 kbit DRAM chips that are 15 percent smaller than current 64 kbit chips.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1926 - Bard's Hollywood Theater in Los Angeles premieres the 38th Alice Comedy film, Alice's Brown Derby.
  • 1930 - The Mickey Mouse film The Shindig is released to theaters.
  • 1933 - The Silly Symphony film Old King Cole is released to theaters.
  • 1938 - The Donald Duck and Goofy film The Fox Hunt is released to theaters. The film is a re-make of the Silly Symphony of the same title from 1931.
  • 1942 - A preview of the film Saludos Amigos is held for US President Franklin Roosevelt, Nelson Rockefeller, and others in government.
  • 1988 - Disney releases the Touchstone Pictures live-action feature film Cocktail to theaters in the US.
  • 1998 - Buena Vista Pictures releases the Walt Disney Pictures live-action feature film The Parent Trap in theaters. This is a remake of the same title from 1961.
  • 1999 - The Rock 'N' Roller Coaster attraction opens in the Disney-MGM Studios Theme Park at Walt Disney World.
  • 2005 - Buena Vista Pictures releases the Walt Disney Pictures live-action feature film Sky High to theaters in Canada and the USA.
  • 2007 - The Broadway performances of The Lion King end, after 5464 performances.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1994 - The last 1994 model Corvette is produced.

World War II history:

  • 1938 - Japanese forces attack Soviet border guards on the Manchurian side of Broad Drum Peak, in a disputed area near the Soviet Union. They push several kilometres into Siberia.
  • 1941 - In Canada, Minister of Defence James Ralston proposes to the Cabinet War Committee that the army overseas force be extended from four divisions to six. The committee turns it down.
  • 1942 - The British Royal Navy's Second Support Group of five sloops commanded by Johnnie Walker defeats three German submarines in the Bay of Biscay.
  • 1942 - In the Caribbean off British Guyana, German submarine U-160 torpedoes and sinks Canadian merchant ship Prescodoc.
  • 1943 - (morning) Hamburg, Germany, is evacuated of nearly one million non-essential civilian personnel.
  • 1943 - Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels writes in his diary about the destruction of Hamburg: "A city of one million inhabitants has been destroyed in a manner unparalleled in history...".
  • 1943 - (evening) 707 British bombers attack Hamburg, Germany, dropping 2318 tons of bombs.
  • 1944 - Former German Military Governor of Belgium, General Alexander Falkenhausen is arrested by the Gestapo, under suspicion of involvement in the plot to kill Adolf Hitler.
  • 1991 - The Russian Federation and Lithuania sign a friendship treaty recognizing Lithuania as a sovereign state.
  • 2010 - Guernsey issues six postage stamps commemorating the 70th anniversary of the evacuation of Guernsey in World War II.

Video game history:

  • 1985 - Judge Sweet orders Universal Studios to pay Nintendo of America $1.8 million in failed copyright infringement lawsuit over Donkey Kong.
  • 1993 - A Federal court jury in San Francisco decides Atari Games infringed a Nintendo patent for the security system in the Nintendo Entertainment System. Atari Games announces it will appeal the decision.
  • 2008 - Namco Bandai releases the Soulcalibur IV video game for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in the USA.

Swedish history:

  • 1634 - The Form of Government is enacted, containing 65 sections detailing religion, succession, rule of the King, absence of the King, etc.
  • 1640 - The Queen Mother Maria Eleonora secretly escapes from Gripsholm castle, and makes her way to Denmark.
  • 1948 - (to August 14) The 14th Olympic Games are held in London, England. Sweden wins 16 gold, 11 silver, and 17 bronze medals.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1968 - A Proclamation sets the dimensions and compositions of 10c through $1 coins in either nickel or .500 fine silver.

USA coin history:

  • 1998 - Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin approves design concept of Sacagawea for dollar coin.
  • 2003 - Edward C. Lee buys the Eliasberg specimen of the 1913 Liberty Head nickel for nearly $3 million from the California Gold Marketing Group.
  • 2003 - At the ANA World's Fair of Money in the Baltimore Convention Center, relatives of George O. Walton bring in a 1913 Liberty Head 5-cent coin for authentication. Three coin experts tentatively authenticate and identify the coin as the one that had been missing for 40 years.
  • 2010 - The US Mint launches the 2010 Yosemite National Park quarter dollar at the Valley Visitor Center in Yosemite, California.

Sports history:

  • 1874 - Major Walter Copton Wingfield patents a portable tennis court.
  • 1899 - First motorcycle race, in Manhattan Beach, New York, USA.
  • 1899 - Southern California Golf Association forms.
  • 1908 - Saint Louis Browns' pitcher Rube Waddell strikes out 16 Philadelphia Athletics' players.
  • 1911 - Boston Red Sox pitcher Joe Wood no-hits Saint Louis Browns, 5-0.
  • 1924 - Paul Runyan wins the PGA golf championship.
  • 1948 - (to August 14) The Games of the XIV Olympiad are held in London, England.
  • 1955 - Smokey Burgess hits three home runs to help Pittsburgh Pirates beat Cincinnati Reds 16-5.
  • 1956 - Cathy Cornelius wins the US Women's Golf Open in a playoff.
  • 1965 - Major league record 26 strikeouts in a game: Philadelphia Phillies (16), Pittsburgh Pirates (10).
  • 1968 - Cincinnati Reds' player George Culver no-hits Philadelphia Phillies, 6-1.
  • 1974 - Saint Louis Cardinals' player Lou Brock steals his 700th base.
  • 1978 - Penny Dean swims English Channel in record 7 hours 40 minutes.
  • 1983 - Steve Garvey ends his National League record 1,207 consecutive game streak.
  • 1986 - New York jury rules NFL violated antitrust laws, awards USFL US$1 in damages.
  • 1986 - Sparky Anderson becomes the first baseball manager to win 600 games in both the National and American Leagues.
  • 1989 - Javier Sotomayor of Cuba sets high jump record (8 feet) in San Juan.
  • 1989 - Philadelphia Phillies retire Steve Carlton's number 32.
  • 1989 - Vince Coleman's record streak stopped at 50 straight stolen bases.
  • 1990 - Boston Red Sox set major league record with 12 doubles in a game.
  • 1991 - First Sunday Night game at Shea Stadium (New York Mets beat Chicago Cubs 6-0).
  • 2007 - Iraq wins its first Asian Cup football championship, beating Saudi Arabia 1-0.
  • 2008 - Russia's Yelena Isinbayeva breaks her own pole vault world record, clearing 5.04m at the Super Grand Prix meeting in Monaco.
  • 2022 - At Oracle Park in San Francisco, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Chicago Cubs beats San Francisco Giants by score 4-2.
  • 2022 - At Petco Park in San Diego, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: San Diego Padres beats Minnesota Twins by score 10-1.
  • 2022 - At Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Texas Rangers beats Los Angeles Angels by score 7-2.
  • 2022 - At Coors Field in Denver, Colorado, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Los Angeles Dodgers beats Colorado Rockies by score 5-4.

  • 1965 - Gemini 5 returns after 12 days 7 hours 11 minutes 53 seconds in space.
  • 1969 - Mariner 6 begins transmitting far-encounter photos of Mars.

Extreme weather history:

  • 2010 - Heavy monsoon rains begin to cause widespread flooding in the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan. Over 1,600 are killed, and more than one million are displaced by the floods.

USA history:

  • 1858 - First commercial treaty between US and Japan signed.
  • 1858 - US citizens allowed to live anywhere in Japan.
  • 1890 - US President Benjamin Harrison sends a directive to Congress demanding legislation to make use of the Post Office for lottery purposes illegal.
  • 1914 - First transcontinental phone link made between New York City and San Francisco.
  • 1920 - First transcontinental airmail flight from New York to San Francisco.
  • 1921 - The Council on Foreign Relations is incorporated in New York.
  • 1936 - RCA shows the first real TV program (dancing, film on locomotives).
  • 1938 - Olympic National Park established.
  • 1947 - Gas leak explodes in a beauty parlor, ten women die in Harrisonburg, Virginia, USA.
  • 1958 - President Dwight Eisenhower signs the National Aeronautics and Space Act creating the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
  • 1965 - The last delivery of $2 United States notes is made.
  • 1965 - Gemini 5 returns after 12 days 7 hours 11 minutes 53 seconds in space.
  • 1967 - Explosion and fire aboard aircraft carrier USS Forrestal in Gulf of Tonkin kills 134, causes US$100 million in damage.
  • 1968 - US Treasury Department bans purchase abroad and import of Rhodesian stamps.
  • 1969 - Mariner 6 begins transmitting far-encounter photos of Mars.

  • 1988 - Judge orders NASA to release unedited tape from Challenger cockpit.
  • 1988 - Last US Playboy Club (Lansing, Michigan) closes.
  • 1996 - The child protection portion of the Communications Decency Act (1996) is struck down as too broad by a U.S. federal court.
  • 1999 - The Rock 'N' Roller Coaster attraction opens in the Disney-MGM Studios Theme Park at Walt Disney World in Florida.
  • 2008 - Wall Street investment bank and brokerage company Merrill Lynch reports it will take a US$5.7 billion third-quarter writedown due to risky debt.
  • 2008 - Southern California is hit by a 5.4 magnitude earthquake, felt from Los Angeles to San Diego and slightly in Las Vegas.
