Personal computer history:

  • 1985 - At the Vivian Beaumont Theater in the Lincoln Center in New York, Commodore International unveils the new Amiga 1000. It features a multitasking, windowing operating system, color graphics with a 4096-color palette, stereo sound, Motorola 68000 CPU, 256 kB RAM, and 880 kB 3.5-inch disk drive, for US$1295.
  • 1997 - Microsoft announces the next Windows operating system release, code-named Memphis, will be called Windows 98.
  • 2003 - Palm launches the Tungsten T2 handheld computer. It features Texas Instruments OMAP 1510 processor, 32 MB RAM, Secure Digital / MMC slot, audio/video player, 320x320 transreflective display, Palm OS 5.2.1, Bluetooth wireless connectivity. Price is US$399; size is 4 x 3 x 0.6 inches; weight is 5.6 ounces.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1925 - Disney completes the 20th Alice Comedy film, Alice's Tin Pony.
  • 1928 - Universal Pictures releases the 25th Oswald the Lucky Rabbit film Sleigh Bells to theaters.
  • 1941 - Walt Disney accepts an offer by the Conciliation Service of the Department of Labor to provide binding arbitration.
  • 1953 - The True-Life Adventure film Prowlers of the Everglades is released to theaters.
  • 1953 - RKO Radio Pictures releases Disney's live-action feature film The Sword and the Rose to theaters. The film is based on the book When Knighthood Was in Flower by Charles Major, and was filmed in Great Britain.
  • 1956 - The Junior Autopia ride opens in Fantasyland at Disneyland.
  • 1969 - In the case of the Sierra Club against the U.S. Forest Service over Disney's proposed Mineral King ski resort, judge William Sweigert issues a preliminary injunction halting work on the project pending the outcome of the trial.
  • 1981 - Disney releases the film Herbie Goes Bananas to theaters in the UK.
  • 1983 - The film Kingdom of Dreams and Magic - Tokyo Disneyland is released in Japan.
  • 1984 - Irwin Jacobs calls Ray Watson, recommending that Disney kill the Gibson Greetings deal. Watson refuses.
  • 1986 - An Orange County Superior Court orders Disneyland to pay US$600,000 to the family of Mel Yorba, who was murdered at the park in 1981. The jury found park officials negligent in their treatment of the injured youth.
  • 1993 - Disney releases the Touchstone Pictures live-action feature film Another Stakeout to theaters in the US.
  • 1994 - The Country Address fashion shop in the Disney Village Marketplace at Walt Disney World closes.
  • 1994 - Buena Vista International releases the animated feature film The Lion King to theaters in Japan.
  • 1999 - Buena Vista Pictures generally releases the film Inspector Gadget to theaters in the USA.
  • 2004 - In San Diego, California, the Comic-Con International convention is held. An exclusive sneak peek preview is held of the film The Incredibles, attended by director Brad Bird and producer John Walker.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 2016 - At the Lime Rock Park in Lakeville, Connecticut, USA, the Northeast Grand Prix race is held, round 8 of the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship series.
    • Finishing 1st in GT Le Mans class and 5th overall is the Corvette Racing #4 Corvette C7.R driven by Tommy Milner and Oliver Gavin.
    • Finishing 2nd in GT Le Mans class and 6th overall is the Corvette Racing #3 Corvette C7.R driven by Jan Magnussen and Antonio Garcia.

World War II history:

  • 1941 - Wilhelm Keitel issues a supplement to Directive No. 33, with further directions for Eastern Front actions.
  • 1941 - (evening) Six British Stirling bombers attack the German warship Scharnhorst at La Pallice, doing some damage.
  • 1942 - The Russian city of Rostov falls to German forces.
  • 1942 - Adolf Hitler creates Army Group A with 17th Army and 1st Panzer Army, under Wilhelm List.
  • 1942 - Adolf Hitler creates Army Group B with 2nd and 6th Armies and 4th Panzer Army under Maximilian von Weichs.
  • 1942 - Adolf Hitler issues Directive No. 45, for the continuation of Operation Braunschweig. Army Group B is ordered to destroy enemy forces at Stalingrad, capturing the city. Army Group A is to move south to cross the Don River east of Rostov, to enter the Caucasus.
  • 1944 - (0800 hours) German paratroopers attack American positions on the north flank near St. Germain-sur-Seves.
  • 1944 - Adolf Hitler appoints Colonel General Schörner as Commander-in-Chief of Army Group North.
  • 1944 - German Admiral Wilhelm Canaris is arrested by the SS.
  • 1944 - Colonel Wessel von Freytag-Loringhoven kills himself. He was head of the Army Affairs Section of Army High Command and part of the anti-Nazi resistance.
  • 1944 - (evening) 612 British bombers attack Kiel, Germany, dropping 3000 tons of bombs in 25 minutes. Four planes are shot down.
  • 1953 - Former German General Nickolaus von Falkenhorst is freed from British captivity. He was condemned to death in 1946 for his part in the execution of captured British commandos.

Video game history:

  • 2004 - Electronic Arts releases the Catwoman video game for the Xbox, PlayStation 2, and GameCube in the US.

Swedish history:

  • 1631 - Tilly with 22,000 men make a light attack on the Swedish army's camp at Werben.
  • 1658 - King Karl Gustav and the Council decide to conquer Denmark, to turn it into provinces of Sweden.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1946 - A Proclamation calls for removal of 5c coins of copper and zinc (dated 1942 and 1943) from circulation.
  • 2008 - The Royal Canadian Mint releases a circulating 2010 Olympics $1 Lucky Loonie coin. The coin depicts a loon landing in water, designed by Jean-Luc Grodin.

USA coin history:

  • 1798 - First Heraldic Eagle silver dismes are delivered.
  • 1844 - End of Christian Gobrecht's tenure as US Mint chief engraver.
  • 1866 - Congress authorizes the sale of the Charlotte and Dahlonega Mint buildings.
  • 1965 - US President Lyndon Johnson signs into law the Coinage Act of 1965. Some provisions:
    • authorizes re-opening the San Francisco facility as a coinage production facility,
    • the composition of the dime and quarter dollar are changed from 90 percent silver and 10 percent copper to 91.67 percent copper and 8.33 percent nickel (two outer layers of 75 percent copper, bonded to core of pure copper),
    • the composition of the half dollar is changed from 90 percent silver and 10 percent copper to 40 percent silver and 60 percent copper (two outer layers of 80 percent silver, bonded to a core of 21.5 percent silver),
    • allows striking of 1964-dated and 1965-dated coins into 1966,
    • suspends production of any silver dollar coins for five years,
    • gives Secretary of the Treasury the power to prohibit melting of silver coins,
    • makes legal tender the half cent coins struck since 1793,
    • suspends use of mint marks on coinage for five years.

Sports history:

  • 1866 - Cincinnati Baseball club (The Reds) is established.
  • 1881 - The Federation Internationale de Gymnastique (international sport federation) is founded.
  • 1921 - Edward Gourdin of the US sets long jump record at 25 feet 2.75 inches.
  • 1931 - France announces they can't afford to send a team to 1932 Los Angeles Olympics.
  • 1969 - National League beats American League for seventh consecutive time, 9-3 in 40th Major League Baseball All Star Game (RFK Stadium, Washington).
  • 1972 - Eddy Merckx (Belgium) wins his fourth consecutive Tour de France.
  • 1974 - National League beats American League 7-2 in 45th All Star Game (Three Rivers, Pittsburgh).
  • 1976 - Baltimore Orioles' player Reggie Jackson homers in 6th straight game.
  • 1978 - Philadelphia Phillies' Steve Carlon becomes 78th pitcher to win 200.
  • 1987 - Petra Felke (German Democratic Republic) throws javelin 78.89 metres (women's record).
  • 1987 - Said Aouita of Morocco runs world record 5,000 metres (12:58.39).
  • 1988 - Saskatchewan Roughriders' Dave Ridgway kicks record eight field goals versus Edmonton Eskimos.
  • 2000 - Cincinnati Reds' shortstop Barry Larkin agrees to a three-year, US$27 million contract extension.
  • 2002 - Vittorio Innocente cycles a record depth underwater, 52.5m down on the ocean floor off Genoa, Italy.
  • 2006 - Phonak team rider, American cyclist Floyd Landis wins the Tour de France; however, tour officials soon announce that he has failed a doping test.

  • 2021 - (to August 8) The 2020 Summer Olympics are held in Tokyo, Japan. They were originally scheduled for July 24 to August 9, 2020, but were postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • 2022 - At RingCentral Coliseum, Oakland, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Oakland Athletics beats Texas Rangers by score 3-1.
  • 2022 - At Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Arizona Diamondbacks beats Washington Nationals by score 7-2.
  • 2022 - At Truist Park in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Atlanta Braves beats Los Angeles Angels by score 7-2.
  • 2022 - At Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Los Angeles Dodgers beats San Francisco Giants by score 4-2.
