Since 1995, I have been collecting information on a variety of topics, creating several timelines of history. Personal computer history:

  • 1975 - Bill Gates and Paul Allen sign a licensing agreement with MITS, for their implementation of the BASIC language. Gates and Allen receive US$3,000 immediately, with royalties of US$30 per copy of 4K BASIC, and US$35 for 8K BASIC.
  • 1980 - IBM representatives meet with Microsoft's Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer to talk about Microsoft products, and home computers.
  • 1982 - Tangerine Computer Systems announces the Oric-1 microcomputer.
  • 1986 - Software Publishing introduces the PFS:Professional Series, consisting of a word processor (US$199), a database filing system (US$249), and a spreadsheet program (US$249), and the PFS:First Choice software incorporating basic versions of all three functions for beginners, for US$149.
  • 1996 - Sharp, Fujitsu, Advanced Micro Devices, and Intel create the Common Flash Memory Interface, a standard for software access of flash memory.
  • 1997 - Apple Computer officially announces Mac OS 8.0.
  • 1998 - Belize issues a postage stamp depicting personal computers in school, connected to the Internet.
  • 1999 - The Shareware Industry Conference is held in Tampa, Florida.
  • 2002 - Sony launches the Clie PEG-SL10 handheld computer. It features 8 MB RAM, Palm OS 4.1, monochrome 320x320 pixel screen, Memory Stick slot, and two AAA batteries. Price is US$149.
  • 2005 - Microsoft announces the name of the next Windows operating system: Windows Vista.
  • 2009 - Microsoft releases Windows 7 code to PC manufacturers in the USA.
  • 2010 - Comedy Central airs the Futurama TV show in the USA. A sign on a Mexican building reads "ADOBE PHOTO SHOPPE", a play on the name of Adobe PhotoShop software.

Walt Disney Company history:

  • 1939 - The National Labor Relations Board approves Disney's Federation of Screen Cartoonists union.
  • 1955 - The Rocket to the Moon attraction opens in Tomorrowland at Disneyland.
  • 1955 - The Candyland (later Candy Palace) shop opens on Main Street at Disneyland.
  • 1989 - The Disneyland Presents a Preview of Coming Attractions display on Main Street closes.
  • 1994 - The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror attraction opens on Sunset Boulevard in the Disney-MGM Studios Theme Park at Walt Disney World.

Chevrolet Corvette history:

  • 1972 - At the Watkins Glen raceway in Watkins Glen, New York, the 6 Hours of Watkins Glen race is held.
    • Finishing 2nd in GT+2.5 class and 10th overall is the Velvetouch GT #35 Corvette driven by Fred Kepler and John Orr.
    • Finishing 4th in GT+2.5 class and 12th overall is the Weaver Chevrolet #64 Corvette driven by Bob Baechle and David Laughlin.

  • 1984 - At the Brainerd International Raceway in Brainerd, Minnesota, the SCCA Budweiser Trans-Am Championship - Round 7 race is held.
    • Finishing 7th is the DeAtley Budweiser #3 Corvette, driven by Darin Brassfield.
    • Finishing 8th is the DeAtley Budweiser #1 Corvette, driven by David Hobbs.
    • Finishing 11th is the Hohstadt Meyer #38 Corvette, driven by Robert Meyer.
    • In 16th place, but not finishing the race, is the Automotive Enterprise #27 Corvette, driven by Rich Sloma.

  • 1993 - At the Road America race track in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, the Chicago Historic Race's 13th International Challenge vintage races are held, over four days. 420 race cars and 28,000 spectators attend. Gene Schiavone's Grand Sport #001 is displayed in Race Car Concours.
    • In Sports Car Concours, Gordon Kelly's 1961 red Corvette/Vignale wins 1st in Custom Class.
    • James Schenettler's 1969 Corvette wins 1st in U.S. Class.
    • In Group 2: modified vintage production-based cars, Dennis Machul's 1957 Corvette wins 1st in class and 1st overall.
    • In Group 6, Steve Prewitt's 1967 Corvette wins 1st overall. Gene Schiavone's Grand Sport #001 is 3rd overall.

  • 1999 - The Merrill Lynch / Brian Redman International Challenge (BRIC) races take place at Elkhart Lakes Road America. Dozens of Corvettes take part in the various events.
  • 2001 - The X-Factor Grand Prix of Sonoma race is held at the Sears Point raceway in California, Round 3 of the American Le Mans Series.
    • Finishing 1st in GTS class and 5th overall is the #3 Corvette C5-R driven by Ron Fellows and Johnny O'Connell.
    • Finishing 2nd in GTS class and 6th overall is the #4 Corvette C5-R driven by Kelly Collins and Andy Pilgrim.

  • 2001 - At the Sears Point Raceway, in Sonoma, California, Round Six of the Speedvision World Challenge GT Series race is held.
    • Finishing 2nd is the Aggregate Industries / McClure Concrete #73 Corvette C5, driven by Phil McClure.
    • Finishing 12th is the West Coast Corvettes / KayKid Racing #97 Corvette C5, driven by Scotty White.
    • Finishing 14th is the 1-800-USA-KIDS / Grand Sport Racing #04 Corvette C5, driven by Bobby Sak.
    • Finishing 15th is the Metric Chemical #35 Corvette C5, driven by David Farmer.
    • In 19th place, but not finishing the race, is the Dixon & Assoc / Grand Sport Racing #08 Corvette C5, driven by Mark Dixon.

  • 2004 - Production of the 2004 model Corvette ends, also ending production of the C5 model Corvette. Nearly 250,000 were built since the 1997. A ceremony is held at the Corvette Assembly Plant in Bowling Green, Kentucky.
  • 2006 - At the Portland International Raceway in Portland, Oregon, the Portland Grand Prix race is held, round six of the American Le Mans Series.
    • Finishing 1st in GT1 class and 7th overall is the Corvette Racing #4 Corvette C6-R driven by Oliver Gavin and Olivier Beretta. This win is the 50th for the Corvette Racing team, more than any other ALMS team.
    • Finishing 3rd in GT1 class and 10th overall is the Corvette Racing #3 Corvette C6-R driven by Ron Fellows and Johnny O'Connell.

  • 2007 - At the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio, the Acura Sports Car Challenge race is held, round seven of the SPEED GT Championship series.
    • Finishing 1st is the Whelen Engineering #30 Corvette driven by Eric Curran.
    • Finishing 8th is the Blackdog Racing #12 Corvette driven by Brian Kubinski.
    • Finishing 10th is the LG Motorsports #87 Corvette driven by Doug Peterson.
    • Finishing 11th is the #28 Corvette, driven by Lou Gigliotti.
    • Finishing 14th is the Blackdog Racing #34 Corvette driven by Tony Gaples.
    • Finishing 15th is the Foster Motorsports #17 Corvette driven by Rob Foster.
    • Finishing 23rd is the Whelen Engineering #31 Corvette, driven by Sonny Whelen.

  • 2017 - At the Lime Rock Park raceway in Lime Rock, Connecticut, USA, the Northeast Grand Prix race is held, round 8 of the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship series.
    • Finishing 4th in GT Le Mans class and 4th overall is the Corvette Racing #3 Corvette C7.R driven by Jan Magnussen and Antonio Garcia.
    • Finishing 8th in GT Le Mans class and 22nd overall is the Corvette Racing #4 Corvette C7.R driven by Tommy Milner and Oliver Gavin.

World War II history:

  • 1938 - Britain and France reject German proposal for four-power settlement of Sudeten problem.
  • 1940 - The British Commonwealth Air Training Plan begins operations in Ontario, Canada.
  • 1940 - Prince Fumimaro Konoye becomes Prime Minister of Japan.
  • 1940 - The British Foreign Secretary dismisses Adolf Hitler's peace offer as "a mere summons to capitulate".
  • 1941 - German warship Scharnhorst moves from Brest to La Pallice.
  • 1941 - Japanese occupy naval and air bases in south-east Indo-China, with aquiescence of Vichy government in France.
  • 1942 - Japanese troops land on the northeast coast of New Guinea, proceeding toward Port Moresby.
  • 1942 - Germany begins deporting Warsaw Jews to concentration camps.
  • 1943 - The US 7th Army captures Palermo, Sicily.
  • 1943 - Canadian forces on Sicily clear Assoro and Leonforte of Axis forces.
  • 1944 - (about 0630 hours) Battalions of the US 90th Infantry Division begin an assault on village of St. Germain-sur-Seves in Normandy.
  • 1944 - (about 1200 hours) In St. Germain-sur-Seves, German Major von der Heydte of the 6th Paratroop Regiments gives orders to counterattack the American forces there.
  • 1944 - German SS men dig up the five coup leader bodies buried in the cemetary at the Matthaus churchyard. The bodies are photographed, then cremated.
  • 1944 - The Polish Committee of National Liberation is set up in Lublin.
  • 1944 - (about 1800 hours) German paratroopers at St. Germain-sur-Seves launch an attack on American 358th's 1st Battalion.
  • 2004 - Dominica issues seven postage stamps for the 60th anniversary of D-Day.

Video game history:

  • 1997 - Sega terminates its agreement for 3Dfx to supply custom 3D graphics chipset for the next Sega video game system.
  • 2008 - Square Enix releases the Final Fantasy IV video game for the Nintendo DS in the US.

Swedish history:

  • 1863 - King Karl XV offers Danish King Frederick a military alliance, proposing that 20,000 Swedish and Norwegian troops would repulse any German attack across the Eider river into Schleswig. There is initial agreement, but Swedish and Norwegian ministers refuse to accept it.
  • 1972 - Sweden and the European Economic Community make a free trade agreement.

Canadian coin history:

  • 1964 - The Canadian Centennial Numismatic Park is officially dedicated, in Sudbury, Ontario. The Big Nickel Monument is unveiled by Canadian Centennial Commissioner John Fisher. The monument is modelled after the 1951 5c commemorative coin, two feet thick with a thirty foot diameter. The monument was the creation of Ted Szilva, at a cost of $35,000.
  • 1965 - The Public Archives in Ottawa officially transfers its collection of coins, tokens, and paper money to the Bank of Canada.
  • 1986 - In Toronto, Ontario, Auction Canada '86 is held. A 1921 5-cent coin in BU-63+ condition sells for $19,500. This is one of the three finest known business strikes. A 1938 specimen set sells for $13,000.

USA coin history:

  • 1797 - George Washington issues a proclamation indefinitely extending the legal tender status of Spanish milled dollar.
  • 1873 - The Carson City Mint receives Trade dollar dies, and strikes 8000 coins.
  • 1876 - Congress removes legal tender status from the Trade dollar, limiting future production to export demand.
  • 1907 - US Mint Director George Roberts sends a 1907 Indian Head eagle with plain edge pattern to Treasury Secretary George B. Cortelyou, and a second example to designer Augustus Saint-Gaudens.
  • 1948 - Gilroy Roberts becomes Mint chief engraver.

Sports history:

  • 1905 - Philadelphia Athletics' pitcher Weldon Henley no-hits Saint Louis Browns, 6-0.
  • 1912 - Games of the V Olympiad in Stockholm closes.
  • 1923 - Walter Johnson becomes the first to strikeout 3,000 in Major League Baseball.
  • 1926 - Cincinnati Reds' Curt Walker ties record of two triples in an inning.
  • 1936 - Philadelphia Phillies' John Moore hits three consecutive home runs.
  • 1955 - Philadelphia Phillies longest win streak since 1892 hits 11.
  • 1962 - Chicago White Sox player Floyd Robinson goes 6 for 6 (all singles).
  • 1964 - Steve Ballesteros wins the Britsh Golf Open.
  • 1967 - Atlanta Braves use a record five pitchers in the 9th inning.
  • 1969 - For the first time in Major League Baseball history, the All-star game is postponed by rain.
  • 1973 - Sue Berning wins her third US Golf Open championship.
  • 1984 - Kathy Whitworth wins a record 85th pro golf tournament.
  • 1987 - Said Aouita of Morroco sets the 5km record (12:58.39) in Rome, Italy.
  • 1990 - Greg Lemond of US wins bicycling's third tour de France.
  • 1990 - Nick Faldo of England wins the British Open Golf championship.
  • 2006 - Canada defeats USA 15-11 in the 2006 World Lacrosse Championship. This marks only the second time the USA had not won the gold medal, and only the second time Canada had won the gold. Geoff Snider is announced as Most Valuable Player.
  • 2007 - Yokozuna Asashoryu conquers the Emperor's Cup at the Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament (Nagoya Basho) in Nagoya, Japan.
  • 2017 - At the Lime Rock Park raceway in Lime Rock, Connecticut, USA, the Northeast Grand Prix race is held, round 8 of the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship series.
    • Finishing 1st in GT Le Mans class and 1st overall is the Core Autosport #911 Porsche 911 RSR driven by Dirk Werner and Patrick Pilet.
    • Finishing 1st in GT Daytona class and 8th overall is the Park Place Motorsports #73 Porsche 911 GT3 R driven by Joerg Bergmeister and Patrick Lindsey.

  • 2022 - At Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Los Angeles Dodgers beats San Francisco Giants by score 5-1.
  • 2022 - At T-Mobile Park in Seattle, Washington, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Houston Astros beats Seattle Mariners by score 5-2.
  • 2022 - At Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Arizona Diamondbacks beats Washington Nationals by score 10-1.
  • 2022 - At RingCentral Coliseum, Oakland, California, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Oakland Athletics beats Texas Rangers by score 5-4.
  • 2022 - At Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri, USA, Major League Baseball regular season game: Tampa Bay Rays beats Kansas City Royals by score 7-3.

  • 1972 - 27.53 cm (10.84 inches) of rainfall, Fort Ripley, Minnesota (state 24-hour record).
  • 2007 - Floods cause chaos through wide areas of Britain, especially the counties of Gloucestershire, Warwickshire, Worcestershire and Oxfordshire, leaving hundreds homeless and thousands of vehicles stranded on major roads.

USA history:

  • 1775 - George Washington takes command of the troops.
  • 1796 - Cleveland, Ohio, founded by General Moses Cleaveland.
  • 1797 - US President George Washington issues a proclamation indefinitely extending the legal tender status of Spanish milled dollar.
  • 1839 - William Selden takes office as US Treasurer.
  • 1864 - Battle of Atlanta - Confederate General Hood attacks USA Army General Tecumseh Sherman and suffers terrible losses.
  • 1876 - Congress removes legal tender status from the Trade dollar.
  • 1881 - The Saint Louis Assay Office opens.
  • 1887 - The US government signs its first international parcel post convention, with Jamaica.
  • 1916 - A bomb goes off during a Preparedness Day parade in San Francisco, California, killing 10.

  • 1975 - US House of Representatives votes to restore citizenship to General Robert E Lee.
  • 1982 - US President Ronald Reagan signs into law the three-coin 1984 Olympic coin program.
  • 1982 - Academic Text Processing Service established in Seattle, Washington.
  • 1986 - House of Representatives impeaches Judge Harry E Claiborne on tax evasion.
  • 1987 - US begins escorting re-flagged Kuwaiti tankers in Persian Gulf.
  • 1988 - 500 US scientists pledge to boycott Pentagon germ-warfare research.
  • 1991 - Serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer is arrested after the remains of 11 men and boys are found in his Milwaukee, Wisconsin apartment. Dahmer confesses to killing 17 males in 1978.
  • 2004 - Production of the 2004 model Corvette ends, also ending production of the C5 model Corvette. Nearly 250,000 were built since the 1997 model.

Other history:

  • 1972 - Venera 8 makes soft landing on Venus.
  • 2003 - Uday and Qusay Hussein, sons of Saddam Hussein, are killed by the U.S. military in Iraq, after being tipped off by an informant.
  • 2007 - Parliamentary elections take place in Turkey. Recep Tayyip Erdogan of the Justice and Development Party is elected Prime Minister with almost 47 percent of votes.
